I used to dream about Final Fantasy 3 (or 6, I guess), but only because one summer I would play for about 8 hours a day.

It's a dream. I could be nekkid. I could be nekkid in your dreams. But let's hope not.

At any rate, this morning I'll figure out if I'm finishing up the patio and moving on to trench digging or if they'll overthink it and add another day to the project (and probably ruin the patio, aesthetically speaking, in the process).

I hope this all pans out well. A hundred bucks (50/person on lease) is a lot of bloody money for an application fee if you get rejected.

When did that become a thing? Where you have to pay money to find out if you're allowed to pay money to live in a place? Yes, forever, I know - but let me rephrase that where the f%+! do they get off?

In my experience, application fees are used to pay for credit and background checks. If approved and you sign a lease, they credit it to your first month's rent. Obviously not everyone does this, but it may be worth checking in to it.

I don't know if I mentioned this, by in the last year or two, NY left my "never go there" list as I learned more and more about it. Now just the big city itself. Sorry. Crowds. Can't get past that. Miami an Jacksonville may be big, but they ain't crowded. Just to look at NY it seems like you can't walk 3 blocks without physically touching someone. That was an issue for me before covid. Now? Major issue.

they have to say- and prove- what the application fee is used for. We have had a major advertising campaign against having to pay money for an application fee that goes directly into someone's pocket.

Done with my patio, two days ahead of schedule.

I still have to sweep in the poly sand (probably about 8 bags, 50 pounds each) and mix and apply the concrete edging (9 buckets, 70 pounds each) so I'll be busy the rest of the day but the hard stuff is finished.

Even on the subway? Movies and TV usually show people bumping into each other all the damn time. I'd be checking for my wallet every two seconds out of fear of pickpockets, to say the least.

Yeah I never have had to pay for those, at least up front. Might have had the fee tacked onto first month's rent, but that only happened after the approval was complete.

From my on-and-off years of living in NYC, I think Hollywood exaggerates the bumping into other people -- both in the literal and the figurative sense. Perhaps because of pick pocketing fears, touching strangers even in the subway is almost a taboo. And for what it's worth, I've never been pick pocketed. It might be different for women due to purses being snatchable, but a wallet in a pants pocket is pretty darned safe.

it happens in the subway but only in outlandish situations- a station is closed and everyone has to walk to the next one, a fight just broke out and everyone is trying to avoid the fracas, a water main just broke and its time to get out of here. On the train itself, if its rush hour? Well yeah then thats kinda just gonna happen. Most people are polite about it though.

Yeah, it’s a possibility on a rush hour subway that you are more-or-less in contact with the person next to you. If you are a tourist in the city, just don’t take the subway at rush hour and you would be fine.

And don’t forget - NY is a big place. It’s more than just Manhattan.

Yeah, pickpocketing is incredibly rare, but it’s good to watch for purse snatching (purse worn across the body is usually sufficient). Scammers are more common, and muggers in less trafficked areas (muggings in midtown and downtown Manhattan are rare, but they occur occasionally elsewhere).

It amazed me how prevalent pickpocketing is in European cities. I expect Dickensian street urchins around every corner.

Although we now know that my reading comprehension has gone down the tubes, my personal opinion is that it's more to the aforementioned, "Nobody carries cash any more, and cards are getting harder and harder to get any extended use out of," than a lack of apprenticeships.

Almost no one I know (not even my kids) carry cash any more; it's all bank cards and VenMo. And while you can almost certainly use a card for a sub-$100 purchase right after nicking it, you have under 24 hours to use it before the victim notices and locks it down.

I was surprised at the small scale of the operations. "$400 for one subway trip" doesn't seem like a heck of a lot to me, so a handful of instantly-used cards might be worth it. But then going out and using the cards immediately after stealing them becomes a full second job.

Anyhoo, interesting article, for sure!

Aaaand... here we go!

The lightning storms from the weekend set off a bunch of fires, and now they're going nuts. As I was working on the studio GothBard asked, "Is that ash?" and sure enough it's raining ash on us.

I went inside and turned on the industrial-strength air purifier we bought for the fires a couple of years ago and it registered the air pollution at 11/12 (12 being the worst).

I suppose it's time to stop working my butt off and figure out something to do while sitting still...

So, everyone was right. The economy in Florida is absolutely BOOMING. Where I couldn't get a single interview in Ohio, I'm getting call backs left and right.

The PROBLEM is that the rent here is absolutely astronomical, and finding an apartment that we can afford with what people pay is damnnear impossible, unless you've already lived here for half a decade and got through the monstrous waiting lists for affordable apartments.

We've looked two counties south and north, and now have to head west into the swamplands of Okeechobee and Indiantown (yes, a legit name) as we search for apartments. These places are even more hell than where our families live, because they at least have sea breezes, and as you head west from the coast into the middle of nowhere it gets EVEN MORE humid, and you're more likely to hear banjos and cries of "squeal like a pig".

I'm just sayin' kamehameha you could move even further west to Ocala, if you're already goin' that way...

(No, this is not a recommendation - I can't guess what the job opportunities are, here.)

I'll be close enough to legit visit!

We saw one today that was rather nice, even if it was a mobile home. We're probably going with this one. It's the only one so far that was 1) in our price range, 2) allows dogs, and 3) actually is available

Bonus, it's even MORE in our price range, cause we just found out it includes utilities.

It's like ten miles from the Brighton reservation, so I put in a few applications at the casino. That's a damn good place to work (I hear). And it's a lot better than driving an hour one way to get to the coast for the job I currently am waiting to start.

Of course, all this is dependent on us actually getting this place, but Tala and I are hoping, as we miss our doggies, and it's kinda nice out there...very quiet location.

Huzzah!

We'll go out to eat oh
We'll go bowling er
We'll have a game night uh
We'll meet up by the gas station at um
We'll do one of the gaming stores eh
We'll hit up a sketchy truck offering boiled peanuts, "real" jerky of various exotic kinds, and fresh veggies ah
for real, though, those trucks can be super-legit just like fish trucks
We'll skate at the rink erm
We'll hang out at a local Church ...

...

...

... we'll wave at each other while at least six feet apart and having a transparent 360-degree full-family-body "shield" for each of us (aka, "giant hamster ball") while we shout loudly in each other's general direction! YEAH~! NAILED IT! FIRST TRY~!

It's gonna be a blast!

A woman came walking up to the door earlier. She looked very puzzled as to why the doors didn't open for her. Then she saw the two signs. At first, I thought she might have been going to get a mask from her car, but it's been 15 minutes and I haven't seen her come back yet...
