Teachers were permitted in the building today just long enough to grab what we needed. I didn't set my alarm, so I ended up rolling up about 9, which is two hours later than I normally get in. I've never seen the parking lot that empty. There's usually someone there for sports practice or the weights room or something. It was kind of eerie and reminded me of a text post I'd seen about liminal spaces.

I'm the only one of my household capable of affording the time off to quarantine. Thankfully Cyz's job has moved to teleconferencing, but that does mean she can't test and work with the kids. Hopefully they are flexible enough to still give her adequate hours. My brother should be fine, since he's the only man on his shift at the water treatment plant, but our housemate is overnight cook staff at a hospital. He's straight SoL.

My mother-in-law reminded us today that, if WW gets laid off because the Census gets shut down, and we can't pay our rent, we can put all our things in storage and move in with her now.
Cue another panic attack and a fit of uncontrollable sobbing, because she's being incredibly kind and generous, but I don't want to give up my home and I'm scared.

What is wrong with this picture?
(1) Our governor has declared a state of emergency and asked people over 65 to shelter in place.
(2) Pretty much ALL the advice worldwide is for people over 70 to stop traveling, especially in airlines.
(3) In a letter to the newspaper today, a 70-something writer asked, "Since so many DMV offices are closed, will the state offer exemptions for RealID requirements?"
Er... considering RealID is only required for travel by plane at the moment... WHAT ARE YOU THINKING!?!?!?!
isn't that merging with the drivers license?

The check-up that they charge you an office co-pay for (if insurance is good enough) or out of pocket entirely?

Foot long steel spike? That's 1d4 damage. Probably 20/x3 on the crit due to depth of penetration. I'd even entertain an argument for x4.
Granted, someone will come along and argue it's an improvised weapon, call it 1d3 and 20/x2, but I'd say a hat pin is a special kind of improvised weapon that is an exception to the normal rules. Like an ice pick.
I have no idea what the PF2 rules would do with it.

Interesting Random Observation of the Day:
Impus Major's classes are being conducted using Zoom, so I thought I'd host a session on my corporate Zoom account just to make sure his computer was set up correctly.
Instead of the usual 10-15 second wait, it was almost a full minute before my Zoom conference came up.
Something tells me I should be investing in Zoom right about now...

Without divulging corporate secrets, let's just say that if your middle-large and up company didn't have all of the physical equipment needed to send a few hundred people home on very little notice, plus any and all software licensing necessary, you're not getting it.
It's just as bad as Purell and toilet paper.

(3) My father-in-law asked me to order some rubbing alcohol from Amazon for him, since it wasn't available in any of his local stores. I learned that even Amazon is sold out of stuff like hand sanitizer and rubbing alcohol. I mean seriously, WTF, people?
I know I said it before, but shouldn't you already have a supply of cleaning stuff in your house?!?!?
Soap is good enough for most everyday applications. There is little reasonable need for keeping hand sanitizer at home unless one has some weird hobby that calls for its use or special needs (some kind of serious allergies maybe? immunity-related illness?).
There isn't that much need for sanitizer now either, except for cleaning things that would not respond well to warm water and soap - things that in normal conditions usually can be just wiped but that might not remove virus now.

I'd love to say that my company had great foresight, but honestly, cheap laptops are easier for them to manage as they rearrange peons, so we've all got Lenovo Thinkpads of the lowest order, they license all the software on the laptop, so the *only* significant issue for IT is the overwhelming demand for VPN connections.
Otherwise, everything we were doing was pretty much tailored to a, "We want to be able to make our employees work wherever they happen to be," mentality.

It is mostly the convenience. When you walk into a building, you can squirt a few dollops onto hands and hope that whatever was on door handles did not stick to you long enough to matter. Or say you leave a heavily traveled break room and don't have a bathroom on way back to your office/cube/desk, you sit down and squirt a few dollops.
Americans are all about convenience. 20 seconds is a long time to wash your hands for most people. Sanitizer is a 5 second fix.

Meanwhile I avoid the hell out of it unless absolutely necessary because I despise the smell. Regular old soap and water is perfectly fine for me, extra 30-60 seconds or not, better than having that scent lingering around me for any amount of time.

Our company believed that only management and up needed that kind of freedom. And IT. The rank and file...well...we can't trust them to work without supervision. Of course, the managers are going to be working remotely, but...what inconsistency?

And in this case it really is a Catch 22. You need all that kind of stuff just to get a passport, but the passport by itself somehow isn't good enough to get your driver's license upgraded, which is one of the government issued IDs you could have used to get the passport in the first place.

Well, I went for a very pleasant walk over lunch (managed to get lost and everything), and, oh my goodness, everyone was behaving admirably! There were dads playing with their kids, grandmas out walking their dogs, just all kinds of people enjoying the freedom of working from home...
...and we all nodded politely at each other and crossed the street to avoid each other meticulously.
I saw around 50 people on my walk, and didn't come within 3 meters of any of them.
In short, if you're all paying attention, it can be done under most circumstances (public transportation and dense downtowns being the obvious exceptions), so the San Francisco mayor's announcement that everyone should "shelter in place" for the duration is a little bit over the top.
Why not just, "Do not come within 10' of another human being as if your life depended on it?"
"Shelter in place" sounds terrifying. "Avoid people" is just something I normally do anyway...
EDIT: Oh, great. Our county just implemented "Shelter in place" as of midnight tonight. Whee?
