GM's worst nightmare...
Commune with nature:
”You instantly gain knowledge of as many as three facts from among the following subjects: the ground or terrain, plants, minerals, bodies of water, people, general animal population, presence of woodland creatures, presence of powerful unnatural creatures, or even the general state of the natural setting.” We could get people, powerful unnatural creatures, and general animal population.
Me: There are 113 grizzly bears, 3,319 deer, 84 lynxes, 97 bobcats, 4149 birds, 9040 rabbits, 743 wild boars, 452 wolves, 12014 Squirrels, 110 badgers, 623 weasels, 113065 mice, 1834 snakes, 9654 moles, 96312 lizards, 20367 fishes, 23742 bats.
I'm not sure if I even got the figures or creatures entirely right, but how the heck do you really estimate what there is in a forest in a 6 mile radius...
Also include 1 jackalope so that the PCs are sure to derail the adventure looking for it.

Great. Thanks Mort. I sent this to Aiymi and Zelda. Aiymi immediately went into her "Mia" character. Mia appears in almost all of our campaigns. She's a gnome and every level she picks what class she's taking based on a die roll. No, it's not close to optimizing. It's highly entertaining.
So this is the response:
Crap, we just lost Mia from the party. She now has the following things on her To Do list:
Bird Watching - find and sketch 4149 birds
Gardening - raise carrots and feed to 9040 rabbits... 9046 rab.... 9108 ra... 9241.... crap...
Wrestling - capture, hug and set free 12014 squirrels
Digging - learn to burrow like the badger do... from at least 100 of them
Parkour - run with 623 weasels, pet and hug (when possible)
Wheeeeee! - 113065 mice, OMG!!! SO ADORABLE!!!
Pungi Concerts - charm 1834 snakes
Hospital Stay - must have full anesthesia to have 9654 moles removed
Suntan - sun myself with 96312 lizards, keep tail souvenirs of the ones that didn't want hugged
Fishing - capture 20367 fish, throw back 19621
Teaching - explain to 23742 bats how to use a Swiffer WetJet for their cave floors

(1) Yes, I've had an occasional lynora sighting, but she's in "quiet" mode. I should learn from her.
(2) I am afraid that the Madoka Magica manga is really, really bad. No; it just plain sucks.
They basically did the anime first, then wanted to adapt it to manga, so let members of their team who wanted to do it do it. And the result is an unfortunate, amateurish mess:
- The art is very basic. I certainly couldn't have done better, but it is some of the worst manga artwork I've seen. And I've seen One's early work!
- The killer is the storyboarding. Whoever did the storyboard assumed that the reader would already be familiar with the anime. So the brutal 1-minute intro of the anime is reduced to... a single pane. And it doesn't even have Homura in the pane! So when Madoka says, "This is awful!", you're forced to agree.
Just to compare, the first season of One Punch Man was 12 episodes based on 7 books, and the anime manages to be amazingly loyal to the books without dropping too many details (other than the delightful bonus manga at the end of every book). The first season of Madoka Magica was 12 episodes condensed into 3 books. Yeah, the manga suffers greatly. I tried twice to get through at least book 1. It's just too disjointed and amateurish to be at all enjoyable.
On the bright side, I only had to pay for 3 books.

Meh. I thought it was some famous character who said, "Ah, well. I would have wasted it anyway."
And next time I get into an argument with someone who says, "Manga is always better than anime, period," I can hand over some concrete proof to the contrary. Which is nice because Impus Major does have exactly such an individual who comes over with some regularity.
THAT little demonstration's going to be worth the $30 to me...

technically, an adaptation of an anime isn't technically a manga. Its something else, the exact name escapes me now. Mook? Something. I have the adaptation for 0083 somewhere lying around.

the anime producers calling something something is a good reason not to do it. Was the show originally a light novel or something?

I know I go off on it a lot, but seeing/hearing all the nightmarish employee/manager stories out there, I prefer to put out the positive.
Our VP was all over my manager about a course that hasn't been updated in 2 years, saying that this is "totally unacceptable" and that my manager "isn't doing her job". It was ugly.
So I grabbed the course. I did a full analysis of it. I noted that it did not need an update. And sent the conclusion to a bunch of director-level people who trust me implicitly. And the VP is kind of terrified of me.
The VP immediately backed off of my manager.
So I came back to my manager: "OK. I took care of that little mess for you, but that's everything I had planned for the week. Did you want me doing something else?"
"Didn't you want to take some time off to do some training courses?"
"Oh, yeah. Always."
"OK. Done. Take the rest of the week to take whatever courses you feel like."
Life is good.

Since there's random anime talk, I don't know if I brought this up before, but can anyone explain why all proper nouns in anime are pronounced in English?
Like, I KNOW there's a Japanese word for Metal, and they could easily fight an equivalent for Knight, like Samurai, yet if I'm watching the subbed OPM, sure enough I hear "Metal Knight" in a bad Japanese accent, instead of (Google Translate real quick) Kinzokyu Kishi.
And it seems to be damnnear every anime. And always English.
I probably brought this up before.

I do kind of think you're conflating what 'Law' is with what it ought to be.
When I look at what 'Law' is then it's almost in every single case a codified set of rules, enforced through social or government institution, with the perpose of regulating the behaviours of its participants. There is no-where in that form that any claim of moral or ethical justification is absolutely necessary, though it can be used to lend credence to said rules.
Often you'll see that the very rights we claim entitlement to are in fact curtailed, limited or even waivered when faced with the application of 'Law'. With one of the most used examples being the right to/of private property which can in quite a number of ways curtailing other's access, usage, speech or a myriad of other rights we deem inherent rights in a modern world.I think I agree with you, I'm just using 'moral' in a slightly different way.
** spoiler omitted **...
I get what you're saying…
And further more I really get what you're saying from a political perspective. Its a bit difficult to explain succinctly…but 'moral' is mostly an empty term to me. Its been reduced to just another social mechanism for limiting or controlling behaviour in people, which is alright as long as we're are talking about an 'opt in' system...
This doesn't even touch on the supposed universality of morality, nor the supposed inherit 'correctness' or 'wrongness' in moral claims…
*sigh*
Its an interesting topic…something I could discuss for hours, but I feel that would just clutter up this thread.

Think you might be putting too much thought into it Kitty...
I would would probably just list off the presence of a handful of mamalian predators and herbivores (etc for birds, reptiles and such)…with special attention to particular "important/relevant" groups (ie wolves, bears, snakes…you name it).
or have the players formulate 3 general questions to "ask" nature and answer them with in the parameters of the spell.
Example:
Player: "Are there any predators around?"
Me: "The presence of a large - around the size of a small horse - clawed and furred predator seems to emanate from your surroundings. (You) seem to be amble to spot the places "it" has passed through the undergrowth, where it has sharped its claws on a dead tree… (and so on)
Player: So is there a bear around…are there more then one around?
Me: The trees around you seem to nod in agreement with you're assertion...
More signs of the animal seem to jump to your eyes indicating that it might be trailed by a couple of smaller bears - probably large cubs…
(Sorry for some of the weird phrasing…I'm lightning translating from Danish to English ^^')
Well, that's one way to keep oneself occupied. No bleaching for that Gnome.

Questions I read was,
"What is the general animal population of this region?"
"How many humanoids other then ourselves are there in this region?"
"How many unnatural creatures are there in this region?"
So I read it that he wanted an animal population census, humanoid census and unnatural creature census.
The level of detail required for the animal population census pretty much killed me. I know it's within the rights to ask for that, but the problem is wow, for a GM to give that, it's not easy. I really do try to research to give information as accurately and realistically as possible, but somehow, I have a feeling I missed something.

Lizards into salamanders, newts, chameleons, geckos...

I don't really believe that question merits an actual animal census by
by individual type."General" would be the exact opposite of "specific", so if you really want to pull one over on your players, you could simply say "none, few, some or a lot of *insert animal family*"
(Though personally I would at the very least give the animal genus)
If it really gives you problems, then simply explain that he fauna and flora is of an average sampling of that particular biotope. Sprinkle in a few exceptions (no wolves, they where hunted to "extinction" in this particular area. No pine trees. No frogs, because of x...that kind of thing) or have your player ask if they are looking for a particular species of animal.

I think I've pretty much covered it. Its probably not representative of how a forest looks like, but I tried looking up the nets for the figures, and then just cobbled them together.
