We put ours out in September. Halloween a week before Christmas, Christmas near the end of September.

We have advent calendars out the ass. We even have some advent calendars that are a 12 pack of mystery beers instead of chocolate.

Now I'm just picturing a donkey with a bunch of advent calendars hanging off of it hanging around outside the store.

Now all you need are those life-sized plastic light-up Joseph, Mary, and the Baby Jesus figures to set up around the donkey and you'll be all set!

Sacrilegious? In San Francisco, I don't think there's such a thing. Except this comment removed by flaming bicycles.

Well, that's certainly a lot more tasteful than what's usually going on outside the store.

Conversations with 4 year old visiting nephew...

"I need a sandwich!"
"Are you hungry? Already?"
"I need a sandwich!"
"Okay, how about egg salad?"
"Egg salad, yes!"

I hardboil an egg and make him a tiny egg salad sandwich.

Four year old eyeballs sandwich suspiciously. "I don't like it."
"Gee, that's too bad!" I shake a clear tin of chocolate rocks. Let it rattle. "Only people who eat sandwiches can have a chocolate rock."
"I want chocolate rocks!" Kid shakes plastic tin, fascinated.
* Sighs * "Yes, I want to give you one, but you didn't eat your sandwich."

Kid eats sandwich. Kid gets one small chocolate rock. Everyone happy.

It's always fun to see how other people view the same situation as you do.

My Orbitz review of the Anaheim Plaza got posted (you have to follow the link and click "Guest Reviews"). I rated it lower than anyone else on the page.

All of our reviews were very similar: "Very close to Disneyland. Very friendly staff. Very run-down hotel."

Yet the reviews run the gamut from one to four stars (of 5). Each of us expects different things in a hotel. When I pay $160/night for a hotel with internet, I expect:
- A room in good repair
- Internet

Failing both of those gets you a 1/5, because you did not provide the basics.

Other people felt that being close to Disneyland was enough, the price point was lower than anyone else, so they get a pass on maintenance. Absolutely reasonable conclusions.

The one guy who got to me was Mr., "The biggest negative is the hardness of the beds. I always wake up with hip soreness" who still gave it 3 stars.

Er... generous, much?

EDIT: I mean, I stayed at a $7/night dive in Athens that was straight out of the Blues Brothers, but for $7/night I don't expect much. But everything in that room, rusty and filthy as it was, actually worked... so it would have gotten at least two stars from me. :-P
Which means that I consider price when awarding stars. I learned something about myself today! Woo hoo!

Sometimes, you do silly things to support your local schools.

As I mentioned, we have an awesome choir teacher. When Impus Major was suffering through significant depression and anxiety in 6th grade, her enthusiasm was the only thing that got him to school in the morning. So I do a lot of volunteer work for her.

When I heard they needed store-bought pumpkin pies for an event tonight, I volunteered to bring SIX.

Well, almost no other parents signed up, the teacher sent out a panicked note that the event was in jeopardy of having too few pies...
...so this morning I'm off to buy EIGHTEEN Costco pies and twelve canisters of whipped cream.

My fridge is going to be a mess for the day...

That is supporting an educator. Apologies to your fridge, NH, but -- Good on ya!

My mother has been a high school English teacher for 21 years now -- and I can honestly say that no individual parent has gone as far as our resident "Haunt of the Pumpkin Pie" to help out. Can't commend you enough for that, NH. +1

Aaaaaaand... karma has come back to bite me in the tuchus.

I gave the hotel a one-star review on Orbitz, soooo... they just double-dinged me for the room.

*SIGH*

It's just one of those days. Already behind at work for the week, then the pie run, then our network has been acting up since the rain came and the AT&T guy decided to come... TODAY, then NobodysWife realized that her costume parts for tomorrow's party are in the storage facility so I have to go there today (3 costume parties, so 3 different costumes, of course), then the double-ding from Orbitz.

Gotta go curse at Cosmo!

LOL. I already filed the complaint with Orbitz, and they're supposed to get back to me within 24 hours.

It's not like I'm actually going to PAY that amount. It's just the time to get them to fix it that hurts.

I'm more indignant about it on others' behalf. I had $400 in space on my credit card, so it's just taking a few days to get it resolved. What happens to people who are running close to the edge on their credit cards, or are using a debit card that doesn't have a lot of extra space? Bank charges, increased interest rates, all kinds of financial badness because the hotel screwed up.

I can get it resolved in under an hour of my time. They either fix it, or I call Chase and have them fix it. (I have to say, I've been impressed with Chase credit cards because every time I've called, they've had my back.)

But for people where $400 puts them over the limit or overdraws their account, it would be HOURS of pain to get it cleaned up.

Yeah, that ain't karma -- that's criminal! Twice rotten, considering the shoddy room.

Well, it's stupidity, so while I wish it were illegal, it's really just an e-mail (and if necessary a couple of follow-up phone calls) saying, "Er, check your records -- you charged me twice."

They'll fix it, I'm sure.

I'm not exactly going to call the police on 'em before I give 'em a chance to make things right.

Installing new operating system, estimated time: 33 minutes.

My guess: 237.6 minutes, after which I anticipate spending at least six hours trying to figure out how to disable Ciri, because somebody watched too many "if computers can talk, we're all doomed" movies growing up.

Also Max Headroom.

Kill them with extreme prejudice. Otherwise they WILL infest your entire city, rendering streets impassable as everyone stops their cars to stare out their windows, saying, "Oooh! Look! Turkeys!"

I swear, 'Mericuns and wildlife.

We were walking home from Rivoli the other week and a woman came running up to us screaming, "There's a DEER! A deer! Right over here! Come see! It's a real live deer!"
Considering EVERY gardener in the area curses the darned things, and I nearly run into one every morning on my walk, we were... unsurprised.

Shiro's player told us an even better story, about a woman (why is it always women? Maybe men just assume everything they see is some kind of dog...) who came running up to him to tell him that an escaped dog was rampaging in the neighborhood, and she called the police. The police had a heck of a time explaining to her that the deer was native. She kept demanding that they haul it away.

I swear, no matter where you live, if you haven't run into raccoons, possums, deer, skunks, rats, and voles or mice at night then you're just not paying attention. I can hear the frogs in our neighborhood, and the one bobcat I've seen was when we were living near Tilden park, but believe or it not, wildlife actually exists in the city! *gasp*
[/tirade]

Sorry. Just hate wild turkeys because of what they've done to traffic around here.

I'm not a meat eater or anything, but I remember when I was, and I remember how unbelievably delicious turkey was. Turkey is so damn tasty, I...no...I will remain strong...damnit, now I want some turkey.

If I had turkey in the house, I would not be a vegetarian tonight. Thank goodness by the time I could go and get some and cook it, the feeling would pass.

That's how delicious turkey is.

There really is no such thing as a turkey invasion. Not as long as Americans know how to make gravy.

EDIT - See, this is why you can't go all alt-left-wing like California does. If you had enough rednecks, you'd NEVER have turkeys stopping traffic. You might have a turkey cookout stopping traffic, as people flock to eat, but you'd never have living ones stopping you.

Some of it may depend on how pretty you want to stay -- those lightsabers *can* leave marks. There's probably a pic floating around on the web of me stalking away from a kegger saber duel with a double-bladed over my shoulder -- the lighting was "bad", since it was probably around 3 am, but no pads and inebriated coordination left bruises and such you couldn't see till daylight. :) Fun times.

Well, Orbitz is plummeting rapidly in my opinion:

  • Yesterday, to be polite, I submitted a support request through their web site, figuring I could wait a couple of days. Upon submission, I got a nice little pop-up saying, "Thank you! You will receive a response within 24 hours!"
  • 24 hours later, having received no response, I called their support line. I spoke with a very nice lady who said she'd try to clear things up for me. She asked me whether she could put me on hold while she called the hotel to try to clear things up. I happen to work with a lot of call center best practices, so I know that two of them are:
    (1) Get a callback number before putting the person on hold
    (2) If you believe you will be putting the person on hold for more than 5 minutes, go ahead and let them go, then call them back once you've resolved their issue.
Needless to say, the "very nice lady" did neither, so after 10 minutes on hold I was cut off.
  • Since I didn't give them a callback number, and the number they had wasn't my home number, I don't expect to hear back from them.
  • So it's been a busy morning at home and I actually have this "work" thing to do, so I'll try again during my lunch break, but seriously? If you're going to promise to get back within 24 hours, get back within 24 hours. Don't make promises you can't keep. If you'd said, "48 hours", I'd still be patiently waiting. And if you're going to have a call center, make sure it's a competent call center.

We'll see how this plays out, but it's beginning to look like I'm going to cross Orbitz off my, "Ways to make reservations" list...
