Is it normal for people to be on their phones all the time checking their messages when you're trying to spend time with them, or am I just really boring?
This is what happens when all of your friends are 10+ years older than you. I don't know how anything works, and I can't figure out how to interact with people my own age.
You get this with older people?
I see it most with younger people. I have begun calling them the smart phone generation, since they literally NEVER put the thing down. I see it with younger workers who will literally quit if you tell them they can't have their phone at work, and certainly can't be constantly checking it or texting when they are supposed to be working. You misunderstand-- most of my friends are in their 30s and 40s, so I'm not used to the fact that people my own age and younger do this.

Skype is really the exception, and that's more like a vocal chat-room than a phone call, really. Either that or it's the people who I'm talking to that I enjoy rather than the people I end up talking to on an actual phone.

Am I the only one that hates talking on the phone and will text everyone, all day, for the stupidest shit.
However, I'm a big fan of person to person contact, so I don't sit there tuning everyone out so I can twiddle on my phone, I excuse myself to twiddle on my phone. Also I don't text people sitting right next to me, unless it's my wife, then we like to talk shit about the other people there with each other.
I should note if I'm with my extended family I twiddle on the phone the whole f#%+ing time, those people had decades to listen to what I had to say and didn't listen to a Damn thing I said, so now the turntables have turned, f%@& them, I regret nothing!!
Of course none of this helps David, as I'm way older than Freehold (despite what the frequent buyers club card he has from The Red Cross says)

And I am not =) With a few limited exceptions, and often only for a limited amount of time. After that, I want to be alone.
You should come to Madison, the whole city is linked by bike paths, you can even take bike paths to all the cliche little Suisse towns around it, wineries, breweries and quaint little cheese shops nearly every 5 miles.

Texting is the way of communication for me unless you are sitting in the same room...
I don't spend my time over a phone all the time, though. It might have something to do that I still have a seven year old honest Sony Ericsson phone, not some not-so-smart-phone. Which surprises some people, especially those who know that I worked in phone servicing company.
For now I have a tablet that fills similar purpose where wi-fi is available but I use it mostly when I am alone. Or during the sessions when I want to check relevant things.

I despise texting. I'll DO it, because my student workers almost refuse to respond to any other attempts at communication, but I won't like it.
When I had to buy my own first cell phone, (My first one ever was through my old job) I just wanted to buy a CELL PHONE.
Sales person-"We have this new model, it now has a camera"
Rags- "I have a camera. I need a phone."
SP-"THIS model lets you surf the web,..."
Rags- "I have a PC for that. Do you have a phone?"
SP- "With THIS model you can both surf the web, and check your email!"
Rags- "Again, I have a Computer for that. Do you have a PHONE? You know, that makes PHONE CALLS?!? This IS the Cingular CELL PHONE store, yes?"
Yeah, I have an attitude problem sometimes,...
In short, my mother and I agree, I will text you, or respond to a text from you. But if the answer requires multiple lines of typing, or more than 2 texts, your getting a phone call. ;P
EDIT- I'm a stage manager and lighting designer. I stare into Lights for a living. ;P The last thing my near-sighted worn-out old eyeballs need to be doing is staring at a little tiny screen with itty-bitty print on it for long periods of time! :P

I did a report on Wisconsin as a lad, I loved writing that paper.
The first gay man I ever met was at my mom's job at an even younger age, he was from Wisconsin and told me I should visit; the cows were intelligent and would welcome me when I got off the bus.
A few years after that, I visited a petting zoo/farm. While the guide spoke about the basics of dairy farming the cow that was his partner turned around and nodded sagaciously at each point the speaker made.
I have also heard Wisconsin women are hot.
I will probably visit Wisconsin sooner rather than later. Maybe for a con.

Done this, but it's not what it looks like. I have an inner ear disorder that in addition to causing crippling vertigo interferes with my ability to hear in loud places like restaurants. Texting lets me interact with the people I'm eating with. It's either that or we all learn sign language. Which is on the list of things to get around to, but obviously haven't done it yet. :)
A lot of people like to make disparaging remarks about cell phone use, but you never know what's actually going on with other people. Sometimes the amazing communication tool is just that. And sometimes people need to learn how to set better boundaries for themselves. It just irks me when folks assume it's always the latter. (General observation, not personalized statement. I hate phone calls. I'm not sure what changed from childhood. Maybe I just have more things demanding my attention. I just don't like meandering conversations that take up time and hands. I want to impart the information needed and get back to whatever else I was doing. If you've got time to chat you have time to drive over and hang out.

I don't care about that. What I care about is getting something to eat because I'm hungry. This is a dining hall at a campus where most student living on campus have unlimited dining hall access because that's how meal plans work, not an exclusive club.

Yep, this is me as well. I am not interested in heavy socialization most of the time; if I was, I'd be on Skype (yay wireless headset!) or talking to you in person. A text will get my attention and get you the answer you need and then we can both go on with our lives. Get the info out in a text or two, then leave me be.
The only person I carry on long conversations with in text is Scint, and well that's a special case. And even then, we'd rather be in Skype or in Google Chat or something; texting convos are exclusive to when we're both at work and those options aren't available.
