So will Firefly.

"Take my home, take my land, take me where I cannot stand.

I don't care, I'm still free, You can't take the skies from me..." Goes off singing merrily.

I want to get a bumper sticker that says simply: "Taking The Sky From You"

I will use that bumper sticker to cover up my sticky bumper.

I think Fox beat you to it.

Fox: taking your sky since 2002.

FOX, Sky. Same crappy owner.

I owe, therefore I am. Renee had it wrong.

Sometimes it seems more like "I am, therefore I owe".

Haven't we had that discussion about Firefly, Fox, and owning before? Or is that my deja vu kicking in again?

Last two days at work...

Yesterday wasn't much fun - I was given a list of phones to find in totes of IT issues. I spent hour looking for those totes spread around our area and going through each of them... And I found two phones out of fifteen or twenty on the list. Then I discovered that the missing IT issue totes are in warehouse high on a shelf. Of course there was no one authorized to use forklift to take it down. *sigh*

This cycle of comments repeats every three months or so.

Halfway through Queen of Thorns by Dave Gross.

I can see why it's the fan favorite among most people here on Paizo.

It's for those exact same reasons I'm not enjoying it as much as the first two.

The book could basically also be titled "Elves, Sex, and Making Fun of Paladins".

Of course you did. *rolleyes* At the very least pick up Prince of Wolves and Master of Devils and read them first, or you're going to be confused by some of the back-references.

Yeah. It's pretty much an inevitability - a plot involving Golarion Elves is going to have to have Calistrans in it. And Calistrans, obviously, are going to be flirtatious and sensual. Which I can see why a lot of people like, but for me it just really distracts from the main story.

And I want to like the paladin character. I really, really do. But she's every cliche complaint that people have about paladins in their party. She's unfriendly. She has no sense of humor. She snaps at everyone. She's harshly judgmental. She gets in a fight with one of the other party members and only reconciles because the Calistran Inquisitor tricks her into it using a spell. She has no subtlety, and is almost as badly lacking in humility. She smites first and asks questions later. And on more than one occasion she risks hurting allies in the process of getting her smite on. At least one of those times it's highly implied it was intentional, too.

I've played a prudish paladin character who wasn't interested in bedding up with other characters and was primarily focused on her duties and her oaths, not too different from this character. She still managed to have a good sense of humor, to jest with her compatriots, to politely deflect flirtation attempts and raunchy comments and innuendo, or in some cases even joke back, so long as she made it clear at some point she wasn't serious about any invitations or acceptances.

I'm only halfway through the book, though. So I'm hoping the remaining half sees some improvement in her character. I've pretty much given up on the Inquisitor being anything but either constantly flirtatious or violently homicidal, though.

I've been reviewing Gross's books as I read them, and thus far Queen of Thorns would be the lowest-ranking of the bunch. (Though I haven't even started King of Chaos yet, as it's the last of the series, obviously.) Which I'd really hate to do - all those complaints aside, the story itself is very good. It just keeps getting derailed by "the inquisitor is flirting again" and/or "the paladin is being a jerk again".

At least it's just those two, though they dominate a lot of the story. The ranger is pretty cool and mysterious. The gnome is awesomely gnomey and provides a nice firsthand experience of the Bleaching. And of course Radovan and Jeggare are their usual fun selves.

Good afternoon FaWtL'ies. Hope everyone is well today, and is having / has a good day. A bit brighter on the coast today, though still quite cold, and a fierce wind to it. Little one likes the wind though, so that's still a win.

I like posting in the Rules forum, but all my posts wind up being walls o' text (I like to quote and link the source material, whenever possible) and get completely ignored in favour of snappier responses that are easier to respond to (but lack the actual facts that are more difficult to counter). Ah well.

Today was the first day the little one actually cried and grabbed onto me when I said "bye-bye" before heading to work. Bless his little heart. I know he probably calmed down within seconds of me being out of sight, but it was upsetting to have to go still.

On the plus, he got two new treats today. One is a wooden set of numbers, from 0 to 9. He likes trying to count, and so far he really likes them. Second was a new pair of little shoes. He's so cute in them. ^_^ He loves running about the place, so I feel it's really important to make sure he has good shoes that fit him right. These ones fit the bill. And they're red! :D

I never took to Enterprise, but my favourite Star Trek was Voyager, so I'm told my opinion doesn't count. :P

Firefly is still the greatest sci-fi TV show I know of. I have the theme song and the Hero of Canton on my iPod, and listen to them regularly.

*shakes fist in general direction of Fox*

I used to love you, man....

Pfff... I am surrounded by Trekkies and Browncoats... *sigh*

And I have to suffer because even with reboot of B5, without G'Kar it will never be the same :(

Just don't say BSG. It's too late for that now.

I imagine a lot of his references are going to be anime.

i want to collect the brown coats of fallen Browncoats like General Grievous collected lightsabers.

When is B5 coming back? I put that series into the same space I put Stargate- Stuff for weirdos.

But since you asked, it's always time for MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM.

Not wing. Not Seed. Not X. Not 00. The original, from the hand of Tomino-o-sensei and company themselves. Parts of it have NOT aged well, but it is an epic. I am interested in doing the hardest of hard core things and enjoying Gundam in chronological order- reading the manga, watching the anime, movies, OVAs, etc as they happened in the universe.

There is also Bubblegum Crisis. It is just awesome, though it is more cyberpunk than scifi.

Any love for Trigun?

it's pretty good, but much like with the slayers, Insane fans kept me from enjoying the series much.

Yeah I've never made a point of getting involved in fandoms overly much.

FISTBUMP

Having said that, some of my favorite episodes come from ST - TNG. Man, did they have some phenominal episodes. But DS9 have something from the begining and they had continuity (for the most part) through all 7 seasons. I would have loved an 8th season.

Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and all the Gundam's I've watched to date (mainly Wing, Seed, and Mobile Fighter) have been awesome. Will add Bubblegum, Planetes, Outlaw Star and MOAR GUNDAM! to the list.

Is it odd that, while they are clearly sci-fi, I categorise such anime as, well, anime, and hence it doesn't compete with TV shows like Firefly in my head?

(Not "doesn't compete" as it "not as good" but as in "apples to oranges")

Dark Archive

Never got into DS9. Know a lot of people who love it, and I do like certain characters, but I just never took to the series as a whole.

Nope, works exactly the same for me as well.

Seen it. Was not impressed. And I wanted to take a baseball bat to the catgirl (Ktarl or something) every time she was on screen.

Strange, I had the same feeling every time that bag-having engineer vibrator girl was on screen...hmm...almost as if...the two shows had something in common.

*rolleyes*
