I have not yet, but I don't want to start poking around at too much stuff until I'm confirmed able to move. If I don't this month, I won't have any place to store stuff here.

My dad's offered to loan me an inflatable mattress for a bit when I do first move, and I have a desk being held by a friend for me, so that'll cover the basic necessities for a while. I can pick up what I can find/afford from there a bit at a time.

First, some questions...

Orthos's Players, Read Under Penalty Of Dire Noodle:
1. Are you looking for a specific theme? The name could suggest a number of things.

2. Is there a specific history for the weapon you wish to reflect?

3. Anything in particular you don't want?

4. Do you want some of the details being what it looks like, is made from, etc.?

First, some questions...
Spoiler:
Quote:
1. Are you looking for a specific theme? The name could suggest a number of things.

It's a weapon designed primarily to make trouble for undead. I like the idea of it having a plant theme, though the name was mostly for the fun of having a pun on "Rose of Sharon".

Quote:
2. Is there a specific history for the weapon you wish to reflect?

I hadn't hammered out the full details of its history, but the basics are that it was created by druids for the purposes of destroying undead, either given or eventually found its way into the hands of a particularly famed undead-hunter, who then lost it when he was defeated by the badass vampire they're going after and whose dungeon they'll find it in. (Possibly guarded by the undead-ified remains of said hunter.)

It should probably have a caveat that it can't be used by undead lest bad things happen. Also whatever its destruction method is, said vamp lord should probably not be able to do it, otherwise I'd have to explain why he hasn't yet.

Quote:
3. Anything in particular you don't want?

Nothing jumps to mind, but it depends how many suggestions I get. If I get a lot of cool powers, I'll have to sift through them to decide which ones to keep and which ones to drop.

Quote:
4. Do you want some of the details being what it looks like, is made from, etc.?

No, this I already have in mind. It's made from an ancient-looking wood so dark it looks black, is covered in thorns save where it's safe to grip, and occasionally blooms roses along the curve (which might have something to do with one/some of its powers.

** spoiler omitted **...

Spoiler:
Give it a positive energy burst ability. Similar to abilities such as Shocking Burst and Icy Burst, except they unleash positive energy. But, the ability only works on the undead.

The above may be a little bit overpowered. Might not be. But, it's what I would do.

And, in order to destroy it, it must be willingly used by a good character in the defense of an undead character against druids who are trying to destroy the undead.

Mind Ramblings, Keep Out Orthos' Players:
So, I'm guessing you want the item to appeal to Lilith's character/player? Or, if it's appropriately anti-undead thematic, should that come naturally? Just curious, as if it's the first, a little info on the who could help shape the what. But, regardless, my initial thoughts are as follows ;

  • Disruption, while normally reserved for bludgeoning melee weapons, would be wonderfully thematic for an undead-bane weapon. Part of its artifact level power could be the fact that it possesses such an enchantment, despite being a bow. You could even change up the DC, if you find the default one too low.
  • Being able to deal different damage types, such as the kinds normally used to overcome the DR of common undead, such as bludgeoning, could be useful. It could also fit in the above, making the disruptive quality only function when it's dealing bludgeoning damage.
  • The roses are a nice touch. Perhaps one rose grows on the bow every day, to a max of five roses. When a rose is placed on a corpse, it functions as Gentle Repose and Sanctify Corpse until, say, the rose is removed, or naturally dies. Maybe the rose doesn't die naturally, who knows. Anyways, preserves the corpse, and also prevents it from being raised as an undead creature. When they meet the now undead hunter, their undead husk could be in remarkably good condition, with a rose in its hair, giving an indicator to the nature of the roses.
  • For the bad stuff of undead using the weapon, you could use the penalties of wielding an aligned weapon of opposite alignment, but to the extent of a high ego intelligent item, i.e. three negative levels to any undead trying to wield the weapon. The adaptive quality could even shift the strength score to one different from the undead trying to use the weapon, to prevent its proper use. Though this could prevent the undead-ified hunter from wielding it against the party, while remaining a threat.
  • More thematically, the bow, despising the undead trying to use it, activates its disruptive ability, should you decide to add it, against the undead trying to wield it. Every time an undead wielding the bow uses it to attack, they must make the save or be destroyed. This may be too powerful, or sound too close to giving the weapon intelligence though.

Also, slightly curious, why do you note that the bow adapts to the strength of the user, instead of just saying it has the Adaptive quality?

Just some initial thoughts and ramblings. With more info on the intended recipient, I may be able to give more targeted thoughts. And the above can be refined, if you like the themes, but not the powers / levels. Hope it helps. :)

Alright, here's a quick summary.

Lilith is a Hunter (from Fistfull of Denarii) with mythic tiers in Trickster. At the beginning of the campaign she was a Dhampir, created and for part of her life raised by the vampire lord whose castle they'll be raiding. However, back several chapters and levels ago, she and every one else in the party earned a wish from The Puck; hers was to escape the influence of her 'father', which Puck granted by using her to create a brand-new species of fey, making Lilith technically a Fey Firstborn.

She's dedicated much of her long life to being a skilled and relentless hunter of undead, alternately looking forward to and dreading the day she faces Ibrahim again, as well as serving as the Spymistress of Iomrall, a servant, champion, and messenger of Queen Titania of Summer, a representative of the "little folk" fey in her forest, and a member of the founding five of the colony and thus part of the troubleshooting team that handles all the kingdom's major problems (AKA, a PC ;) ).

Hope that helps =)

Re:Re:Orthos:
Orthos wrote:
Cool Stuff
Cool beans. So, Dhampir turned Fey Firstborn, ex tool of a powerful vampire, now hunter of undead, and Spymaster. The item doesn't seem like it should focus on the Fey or Spymaster roles, given its Druidic and anti-undead history. Some more ideas ;
  • Protection, or bonuses to saves, against the mind affecting abilities of undead. Protection from being dominated or enthralled by another vampire would probably be seen as a plus, and definitely useful for anyone seeking to hunt / destroy such creatures. Maybe taking a similar form to Protection From Evil, though only against Undead abilities.
  • Perhaps, if engaged in melee, the bow protects its wielder, by lashing out with thorny vines? Or mayhaps, instead of trying to damage, or as a rider to said damage, it tries to bind melee attackers.
  • Searching the PRD for vine has led me to the Verdant Sorcerer Bloodline which looks like it could be mined for plant / vine / thorn ideas. Entangle, Wall of Thorns and the Tanglevine (Sp) could all be modified for the bow's own thorns and vines lashing out, or simply as spells it could cast a number of times per day.
  • Similarly mining other things for inspiration, the Verdant Vine, Dryad Sandals or Snare could also be modified or incorporated in some way. Particularly the Dryad Sandals, bestowing the Druid ability to pass among nature without trail, would be useful for a hunter of any kind, and the kind of blessing a Druidic artifact could likely possess.
  • Focusing less on the nature aspect, and more on the anti undead aspect, the Cleric spell list could be mined for spells or effects the item could cast or possess, such as Heal, though only usable to harm undead, Detect Undead, Hide From Undead, Consecrate, Searing Light, and Undeath To Death. Though Clerics would also have to be involved in the item's creation for the possession of these abilities to make sense.
Sorry it isn't all that targeted, but I fear I know little of the Fey, and I can't access your link at work.
