You know what's not shifty? The Dread Kraken!

I need more ranks in Craft (segue).

There's something fun and kinda challenging about crafting a statblock around an image with little more than that to go on. I need to get more practice doing it. =D Maybe I'll start a thread in Homebrew of "gimme a freaky/weird/fun monster picture and I'll stat it" or something. Or just do it here. Shoot me stuff guys =)

In similar news, finally found an image for the one member of my Songspawn that I've had a mental picture of from day one, the Fermata. The rest I've had vague ideas of what I wanted them to do, but came up with the majority of their design and abilities after finding a suitable image to match the name; the Bird's-Eye was not only the musical term/symbol that I first attempted to make a monster out of and thus kind of became the basis around which the Songspawn were designed, but it's also the only one I had a solid idea of what I wanted before attempting to search up a picture for and assign mechanics to it.

Also realizing I mistakenly stat a boss monster's nastiest ability as (Su) instead of (Sp) and thus it has a much higher DC than intended, and that fixing it would significantly reduce the chances of accidental TPK, makes me feel better about the dungeon I'm running in KM.

It is challenging and fun. I have all 26 monsters and their names planned out, and I've got a little bit of a buffer. Coming up with names was difficult at times, and I had to bend things some to derive the monster names (you'll see a prime example or two next week).

I've been getting a decent supply of monster images from Patrick, Flash, Paris, and Moorluck. A couple of times during the weekly run I had a monster concept in mind and sought out an image to go with it.

If you start a thread in Homebrew, I'd be interested in that. Link to it here if and when you start it up. Also, I'm looking forward to seeing more songspawn from you.

I'll put up the Largo when I get home, then, and the Fermata once I finish it. The others I've done - the Andante, Piano, Chorus, and the Dissonant Creature template - I'm keeping the stats offline until the group in my Kingmaker game actually battles them. =)

Not from work - Facebook's one of the only two sites I've discovered my company blocks, the other being Tumblr (though bizarrely classified as porn) - but I'll check as soon as I get home =) I'll PM you if I can't get to it.

Tumblr is a great place for diy porn, I'm not surprised.

Howdy Solnes!

Hi there BT :) How's things?

I'm hanging in there. Diane is struggling. Dad's health is slowly failing.

On the bright side I should be going to Corpus Christi for another job soon, and my grandkids are doing well.

Sucks to hear, BT. Hope things turn up soon.

Orthos wrote:

Thanks. Dad and his brother have lived a good thirty years longer than any man in their family in living memory.

Diane's issues are very complicated, but I hold out some small hope that there is something that can be done to improve the situation or at least slow the deterioration.

I really hope the job in Texas runs long because I seriously need the money after last year.

Impressive.

If it's his time... well, I hope the passing is peaceful, and that his regrets are few and his friends and family nearby plentiful.

very well said, Orthos

BT,
best wishes and many, many positive waves to Diane, your Dad and you, hang in there

BT my thoughts and positive waves are with you. I hope that life throws you some good fortune this spring. Keep up the good fight!

Man.

I went back looking through one of my aliases' post history and ended up in FAWTL4. Lots of old familiar names we sadly don't see 'round here anymore. =/ Moff, Davi, CJ, Flash, Sharoth, Mairk, Woody... on and on and on.

I know Flash is super busy. Mairkurion also. Moff I am unsure what he's up to. CJ has Internet connexion issues.

The flow of posting is always weird. I don't post nearly as much as I once did, I am posting now while taking a small break. When I was unemployed I spent an awful lot of time posting. I might come to another patch where I post more.

Thanks for the kind thoughts.

BT, sorry to hear that brother. You know you got our prayers.

Mergh. Is this job over yet? I think yesterday and today it is kicking my ass to reinforce that leaving is a good decision. It's just one giant mess after another.

This day needs to be over. I'm tired of dealing with bureaucracies. I'm also tired of demolition, spackling, nailing, cutting, measuring and all attendant chores thereof

Hmmm..., bus fare or taxi fare is cheap.

:
I won't be awake Sunday. I'm working Monday, morning or swing, which one I don't know. I work at Terible's/Texaco on Tropicana and Maryland parkway just down the road from McCarran Airport. I'm probably working Swing shift Tuesday. If you can swing by, come see me.

Well, just found out my oldest sister is in the hospital because she didn't check her blood sugar. She had a second stroke and is now paralyzed on her left side.

I really could use some positive waves and healthy prayers right about now....

As requested =) Sadly in my encounter I never got to use the Piping Lullaby as they had to burrow to reach the party and then didn't get to move again before dying. Still made a pretty nasty impact on the PCs though!

Songspawn, Largo:
Songspawn, Largo (Lull Turtle)

What at first resembles an eyeless black tortoise as large as a small boat quickly reveals itself to be something very much not of this world. Its beaked maw is filled with crystalline teeth that rattle and chime in odd, semi-musical vibrations within its jaws. In place of legs it has eight insectoid limbs, riddled with holes that release a bizarre piping song whenever it walks.

They focus on biting at an individual target until surrounded, at which point they activate their broad song then turn their attacks on whichever foe appears most injured. If overwhelmed they burrow, hoping their attackers will scatter or leave, then burrow after or emerge to attack stragglers.

SPECIAL ABILITIES
Broad Song (Su)
As a standard action every 1d4 rounds, a largo can press its weight down on all its legs at once, creating a single solid note that rattles the bones of everything nearby. All creatures within 30 feet from the largo take 6d6 points of sonic damage; a DC 23 Fortitude save reduces the damage by half. Creatures that roll a natural 1 on their saving throw take an additional 3d6 sonic damage.
Improved Silence Aversion (Ex) Dark Song cannot enter silence effects. If the spell is cast with one inside its range, it must succeed at a caster level check as if facing Spell Resistance before it can affect the largo; if it succeeds, the largo is shunted to the nearest square outside the border, and is pushed away from its edge as if bull rushed (no CMB check necessary) if the AoE attempts to move into or through its space; if the SR check fails, the largo completely ignores the silence, and sonic effects it creates still function within the AoE radius.

If silence or a similar spell or effect is cast on a largo and it fails its Will save, the spell deals 1 point of untyped damage per caster level to the largo before ending completely.
Piping Lullaby (Su) When a largo moves, its organ-like legs create a piping melody that soothes and sedates any who hear it. Creatures within 60 feet of a largo must make a DC 25 Will save every time it takes a move action to change location when not burrowing. Those who fail take a -5 penalty to Perception and a -2 penalty to AC, attack rolls, and saves for 12 rounds as they are overcome with drowsiness. Once a creature has successfully saved against the piping lullaby, they do not need to make another save against that individual largo for 24 hours. A largo takes a -20 penalty to Stealth when its piping lullaby is active.
Song (Ex) Dark Song are composed of living sound. They are immune to all sound-based effects and sonic damage. If a Songspawn takes sonic damage, it forgoes any saving throw and is healed by 1 hit point for every 2 points of damage the attack would have dealt as if it had failed its saving throw. It is immune to any effects caused by a sonic effect, such as deafening. Dark Song use their Constitution rather than their Wisdom for Perception checks, and gain a bonus on Perception equal to half their hit dice. They are immune to mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects) and Wisdom damage or drain.
Vibrato (Su) An largo is composed of living sound. It deals an additional 3d4 points of sonic damage with its natural weapons, determined by its Hit Dice: largoes advanced to 16 HD or beyond deal 4d4 points of sonic damage.
Vicious Bite (Ex) A largo's wickedly hooked beak gives their bite attack a ×3 critical modifier.

I'm possibly playing a show in two weeks, but I don't have a name yet. Any thoughts? Nothing funny, no puns. My stuff sounds a bit like Chuck Ragan / Dave Hause / Jets to Brazil.

Positive thoughts for Blue Pigeon and Bitter Thorn.

Any reason to not use your real name?

Barring that, how about... um... yeah... I was going to suggest "Piston," and then I realised that's pronounced in a way that could be open to jokes. Which is a pity, cause it'd be a cool band name.

Hmm... "St. Mallon?" Possibly pronounced in French, because everything sounds better in French.

And yes, I suck at coming up with names for non-indie acts.

Not in the tradition of the British 1980s and 90s indie-scene. (the Smiths, Aztec Camera, Orange Juice, His n' Hers-era Pulp, and so on.

On your side of the Atlantic, I guess Pavement would be the best example.
