It's like RPG high school, except with a healthy dash of munchkinism applied as the social measurement.
I've never played an MMO, but I hope PFO isn't like that.
As an aside, Young Justice: Invasion was more awesome than normal this morning. Four words- Arsenal and The Outsiders. Two more words- HELLS YEAH!!!!!!!

It's very hard to imagine when one is in high school how irrelevant high school really is.That's true of any age group though. But it's most obvious/exacerbated with the young.This is probably obnoxious, but I sometime have to remind young people that I care about that most of the people in their "peer" group who use disapproval and fear to manipulate them are in fact ass bags who are entirely unworthy of the amount of energy they are wasting on them.
In short, many people are ass bags, and they don't merit the effort to impress them.
I actually find that most things that any age group think important are fairly irrelevant. Jobs, sports, material items, money, power. It all comes to dust eventually. All that scrabbling after glory usually amounts to naught. I try and enjoy the act of being, no matter the state of being I am in.

You can have a good 'friend' guild. Stay away from the 'top tier' guilds and just play the game as it unfolds. The herd instinct rears its ugly head everywhere ...

Having experience of both, I can report that the reaction of telling a group of gamers you enjoy sports is often not dissimilar to telling people who drink that you'd rather have milk (or something equally non-alcoholic) tonight.

Oh and don't let anyone tell you you are playing your toon 'wrong'. Granted, classes, as in TTRPGs have certain slots, but some people bring it to an uneccessary unpleasantness if you want to hit creatures as a cleric or maybe use a ranged weapon as a fighter. Tell them to screw.

Having experience of both, I can report that the reaction of telling a group of gamers you enjoy sports is often not dissimilar to telling people who drink that you'd rather have milk (or something equally non-alcoholic) tonight.
Well, you are lucky to be in the sports-loving clique. My experience with telling sports lovers you hate sports is more the equivalent of proclaiming you hate them, and their family, and their country.

AAAAHHHHH!!!! CRAP!!! That'll learn me to be careful what I click on. At least I know what image will be appearing in my nightmares tonight.
And apparently that makes me a wet blanket.It depends. One can be the "pass" part of the "puff puff pass" equation, but if you come off as someone who is trying to dictate or regulate another's good time, it can make things awkward.
In this situation, I usually just say "I'd rather not be around that stuff, if you're going to partake I'll politely excuse myself". This is, almost 100% of the time, interpreted as "Put your drinks/smoking/drugs away or I'm throwing a fit and leaving" rather than "I don't enjoy this particular recreation for religious/personal/health reasons, I'll do something else while you guys have your fun".
That reaction is what I am unhappy about - the idea that not only do I not enjoy what you're doing, my refusal to be around you while you're participating in it is some kind of personal insult or something that demands you insult me to make up for my refusal to be around you while you're drinking/smoking/whatever.
Really? I've hardly ever had a problem either passing on a drink or passing along a smoke. Somebody might question, but that's about the extent of it. Of course, I usually don't comment on the activity, either, just shake my head or move my hand.
EDIT: I've also found that tonic water and lime looks very alcoholic and nobody bothers you AT ALL. I guess Sprite would be the same, but I don't want all the sugar.
It's not the passing, it's the "I'd rather not be in the room when you're doing it".
As I said, I don't like being around drinking/smoking/drugs. So I offer to excuse myself, and go do something else. And that's when people get mad.

Thinking I'd have been better off passing on sweets and pastries instead of alcohol. The sugar-cravings are riding me hard tonight.

The first guild I was in was much friendlier... until we recruited some people who were only interested in pushing us up the rankings.
Ebon and I ended up leaving that guild with one of the friends who got us in. The guild we created together was much more like the first when we first joined up, and it was the main reason we stuck with WoW so long. They're also the only reason we'd ever consider going back, if funds and time allow.
And the guy who spearheaded the change ended up stealing the guild later.
