Its like out of a movie. Very deserving of the accolades heaped on him.
I became friends with a Gurkha at my installation while I was in the army. Small, quiet guy. Very likable.
Could probably twist off my head with his hands if he wanted to...

Wow.
Every single time I've read or heard anything about the Gurkha, it's something insanely over the top and badass, like the piece on Bhanbhagta Gurung from the book Badass(appropriately enough).

Geez thats a long long conversation that one...
On some levels I'm not comfortable with it, I accept that this is really my own prejudice and hang up, however it's just how I feel.
Yet on the other hand I readily accept that women have been on the frontline of quite a few armies for quite some time, and have held their own. Indeed I have witnessed quite a few of them do this myself.
I have spoken to female servicemen about the issue at length, and all they generally want is a right to put themselves forward to stand on the frontline like anyone else, and frankly I reckon thats more than fair. That said, Infanteering is a hard and ugly life, and I have to ask myself just how many women would really go for it if the opportunity was open.
I know the New Zealand Army just recently commissioned their first female Infantry Officer (as an Lt) and so far so good.
Where I don't like the notion is when frontline meets conscription, I don't want our daughters sent to that.
Is there any reason to suspect this might be propaganda?

People wonder why I prefer such weaponry for home defense as opposed to firearms. That gurka is indeed the man.

I'm inclined to be uncomfortable with the idea, but I've been out for a long time now. On the other hand I don't 18 year olds have changed too much in 20 years.

The sad part is, of course, that it took Joanna Lumley paying for a massive campaign, including court action, for the government to accept that giving the Gurkha's british citizenship after their period of duty, was a good ideaThat is absolutely fabulous.

Partisans in Serbia during WW2 and Red Army in Russia during the same war had large number of women on the front lines and they served with great valor - perhaps greater than their male counterparts. Israeli Army has women serving on the front lines, does it not?

It denigrates the servicemen who suffered and died facing the Nazi onslaught. All soldiers facing the enemy were equally as brave.

Seriously, though, Gurkhas are extremely well trained. In close quarters, against a surprised, untrained rabble, it seems about right. Why did so many run away? Probably by how quickly he took down a few - and facing bloody steel face to face is frightening in a visceral way, more even than a gun.

Most men soldiers do not have to fear being raped. I suppose that is the main reason.

I agree, and would toss in the Ghurka reputation as well. It is one thing that two cars over they hear some screams and gunshots and it comes back to them "man with knife fighting back" or "Ghurka with his kukri killing us" :P Not to take away ANY of his capability and sucess...but I think the reputation helped vs the morale as well.

Their rep is definitely a weapon in and of itself. There's a reason why Prince Harry got installed with the Gurkha during his time in service. ;) I can't speak for the accuracy of this report, but there was talk that many Taliban fighters were terrified of the Gurkha due to them being built up as a sort of bogeyman on the battlefield, as in tales of them eating their enemies. The Gurkha allegedly said nothing to refute these claims.
