Rise of the Runelords

Hi Everyone

I'm GMing the Rise of the Runelords adventure path for some of my friends.
Our gaming group consists of 4-5 PC and me as the GM.
I'm new to pen and paper role playing and have had about 8 pathfinder sessions as a PC at the local gaming club. I started at the club with the intent to learn as much as possible so that i could GM my own sessions.

Anyways, i have GMed my first successful session this Saturday which lasted 15 hours(11,5 hours of Pathfinder - Burnt Offerings and 3,5 hours of improvised adventuring).
I would say that we are halfway through Burnt Offerings.
I have the complete Rise of the Runelords adventure path and as things are now i intend on running the complete adventure path with my group.
But I have only had the time to read and prepare for Burnt Offerings, which means that i don't know what will happen in the rest of the adventure path.

SO...
I want my players to have more options.
I'd like to ask for help from GMs that have run the complete RotR adventure path, I need ideas for side quests to use in Burnt Offerings that won't ruin the story later on. The more thought through the better.
Preferably side quests that can build around Sandpoint and it's history and Citizens, if i can include Major Kendrin, Ameiko, Shalelu as key NPC's that would be great, or maybe the Sczarni family, or having more story/adventurering around the story about Jervis Stoot(late unpleasantness, choppers island)
There is alot of story to build on, but i don't want to ruin the storyline later on by making wrong twists.

Sorry for making this such a long post, i felt it was needed to explain a little bit about myself first, so you know how much experience i have.

Anyways, the more thought through suggestions the better.

Looking forward to any replies.

Hiya,

I have used so far the following resources to increase the campaign time :

- A very good write up of Chopper Isle from these boards. (there was a .pdf)
- Reaper 3.5 Adventure "The Eldest Son" to get the PCs to Magnimar earlier in the campaign so it feels less artificial.
- From Shore to Sea (after Skinsaw Murders on the way home).

I plan to use the following in the near future :
- Seven Swords of Sin (after Hook Mountain, one of the PCs is tied to Kaer Maga)
- Crucible of Chaos before episode 6

I am debating on using a powered-up version of The Gosmouth Heresy while in Kaer Maga.

Hope this helps. keep up posted.

The Chopper's Isle write up as well as another side trek, Boggards in Brinestump Marsh, are available on Dorkistan.com.

Depending on how blood thirsty your party is, there is the option of transporting captured prisoners to Magnimar for trial. Half of my group escorted Tsuto there and were going to be introduced to Ironbriar (Ironbriar is a villian they will encounter in the second book, though he is a justice in the Magnimar court system). Never got to run the session though.

Depending on how things go with the goblins of thistletop I could see them sending a lone sneaky messanger into Sandpoint to inform the party they need their help...and then send them on a mission to slay a competing goblin tribe/ogre clan/troll.

There's the whole Sandpoint Devil thing too. I didn't do a good job of it the first time I ran Burnt Offerings, but next time I plan on making a small death cult type senario, where a small group of folk in Sandpoint are sacrificing animals to the SD in order to keep it happy and not killing them. As time goes on the sacrifices need to consist of more and more, subsiquently becoming harder and harder to explain away.

My GM had 3 side quest type things we did during the portions I have played .

The 1st was after the goblin attack. Shelalu(sp?) was in town and asked us to look into some goblns raiding the trash heap. The whole thing was a setup to have us fight an an object animated by choppers spirit. The goblins went down and were animated by a big bird carve piece of flotsom against us.

the 2nd was mostly social. interacting with a family of traveling Varisians. Racial tensions ran high. A blind Varisian girl was hit with a rock. The brother assumed it was Ven Vinder(shakes fist). The whole time it was an alchemist tied to the Scarnetti family trying to prove his worth by attacking Varisians. (we never got concrete proof). It ended with an angry mob and a kidnapping. We had to find the alchemists cabin which was trapped.

3rd thing he did was run Automatic hound (a 3.5 Dungeon adventure) on the way to Magnimar. It was during a layover in a small village.

4th he set up War of the Wielded (another 3.5 dungeon adventure), by having us break up some fights the one group were running the the shadows. then after the seven, but before the watchtower we actually played war of the wielded (sort of),

Much of this was because he was running medium instead of fast xp, but it was still fun.

I'm running numerous side quests as I am running a 7 PC group and medium advancement. The Burnt Offerings ones included some drama between the Licktoad and the Birdcruncher goblin tribes that was exported (with minimal effort) from Kingmaker.

Rather than repeat it all under spoiler tags, the story is here:

Add a side quest involving Shaelu (sp? sorry, working from memory here). Instead of her just arriving, send the PCs out to get her.

I ran Mad God's Key in Sandpoint which will led into a sidetrek in Magnimar using 0One's Pound of Flesh.

Thanx for the replies.

I've had a look at the Choppers Isle writeup it looks interesting, i think i'll do a couple of changes and use it(thanx for the link Tom)

Fraust - Hmm a prison transport...i think i can come up with something, thank you.

XperimentalDM - Good idea doing something with at the Trash Heap/Junkyard. I'll play with idea and use it.

I like Fraust's idea about a goblin messenger asking for help with problems tied to another tribe.
Can anyone tell me if the goblin tribes are part of the adventure later on in rise of the runelords?
I'd like some help developing this idea.....

I plan to add as a side trek Neil Spicer's Fellnight Queen adventure transplanted to the Sanos Forest with Whistledown being the starting town rather than the one mentioned in the adventure when my players travel up the Yondabakari River towards Fort Rannick.

I don't recall any further interaction with the goblin tribes post Burnt Offerings. Run with it! :)

Someone mentioned running Shore to Sea on Grubber's Hermitage near Sandpoint.

In my game, I will probably be adapting Masks of the Living God into Skinsaw Murders. I like the idea of the PCs trying to infiltrate the Skinsaw Cult to find dirt on its leader: Ironbriar. Instead of a cult compound in the middle of the city, I might just make the existing sawmill A LOT bigger (like a factory compound). The mask golem = scarecrow flesh golem and all the Razmir references will be replaced with Nogorber/Father Skinsaw stuff.

After finishing Thistletop and before The Skinsaw Murders begins, I think I'm going to use a short adventure called "The Beast of Barren Hill" from Dungeon Crawl Classics: The Adventure Begins.

Spoiler:
It involves druid/bear combo that is terrorizing the countryside, including the local goblin population...Should be a pretty natural fit to the campaign

Grand Lodge

That sounds pretty good, actually. Make sure to post how that turns out.

Spoiler:
Id be interested in seeing how PCs handle needing to help defend the goblins or just aiding in general, after the events of BO

Thanx for all the replies.
I was able to track down Dungeon Crawl Classics: The Adventure Begins - and i'm planning to use two adventures from it.

"DCC - The Beast of Barren Hill" - A goblin will ask the PCs for help killing this bear(they already captured and released a goblin earlier in exchange for information, so he knows them already), in Exchange the goblin will show the PCs where the bear is(since it's terrorizing both goblins and local farmers, the PCs should be interested in this) and make sure that his clan will cease all plans to attack/participate in raids on Sandpoint. The goblin cannot say how he will prevent/stop his clan from participating in the planned raids, just that he will, he does however require the PCs to bring him the head of the bear.

"DCC - A Question of Morels" - There is a wizards shop in Sandpoint..lastname Voon. Voon has told the PCs(when they were trying to get discounts at his store) that he knows a druid that needs some mushrooms, which unfortunately are poisoness, if the PCs can get those mushrooms for him, he will have the druids make a few valuable potions for them free of charge since he could not offer any more discounts.

Junk yard - I will be using a couple of goblins here and use an animated rope.

Choppers isle - will be using the writeup found at dorkistan.

Here are some Sandpoint-based side-quest adventures that I've written (or am in the process of writing...)

If I have time, I'll put these together in a PDF and post them somewhere, but I can't promise a time-frame. If/when I do, I'll post a link in this thread.

1) The Toadstool Goblins: (For a party of six well-equipped 1st-level characters): A group of about 12 goblins led by a 2nd-level goblin barbarian named Kneecrusher have split off of the Mosswood tribe, and have established themselves in the ruins of a Thassilonian temple located in the southern fringes of Mosswood. Because the Mosswood tribe has forbidden them from using the woods as hunting grounds (on pain of death), they have been raiding human farms on the Moors to the south. Shalelu came to town to ask the sheriff for a few men-at-arms to help put this splinter tribe out of business, but he has no men to spare, so he arranges a meet between her and the Sandpoint Heroes. The Toadstool Goblin lair has a juvenile Phycomid (from Bestiary 2) guarding a false entrance, which is where they get their name. These goblins have a little information: Ripnugget of the Thistletop tribe had come to Mosswood a few weeks ago with a "longshanks female" and promises of food, fire, and fun if the Mosswood tribe helped with an attack on the "longshanks lair" (i.e. Sandpoint). Kneecrusher has always hated the Thistletops, and wanted nothing to do with them, so he and some followers stood up to the Mosswood leader-- and were exiled from Mosswood.

I ran this just before the "Missing Bartender" hook to get the characters up to L2 before they got to the Glassworks.

The next two I'm planning to run as interludes between Burnt Offerings and Skinsaw Murders (the latter of which I'm modifying rather extensively...)

2) Imaginary Friend: (for 3rd-level characters): Life for the Barrett family [the family from the "Goblin in the Closet" encounter] continues to be hard. A month or so after the death of her husband Aldergast at the hands of a goblin hiding in their son Aeren's bedroom, Amelie Barrett has slipped into a black mood and has been unable to properly take care of herself and her two young children. Now living with her unmarried sister Rhinda in a cramped Hook Street apartment on the seedier side of Sandpoint, the Barretts have been neglecting Aeren due to their grief. In his loneliness, Aeren started playing with an imaginary friend, but the games have turned dark. In reality, Aeren's "friend" is an attic whisperer living in the apartment's cellar, the restless spirit of the neglected child of a long-dead prostitute. A complicating factor is that Aeren wants to keep playing with his friend, and will defend it from the party.

I plan to run this encounter after the defeat of Nualia and the Thistletop goblins, but before I start Skinsaw Murders in earnest.

3) Night of the Living Dead Goblins (for 4th-level characters): Reports of goblins raiding travelers of the Lost Coast Road south of Sandpoint aren't new, but reports of lurching, shambling goblins intent on killing raise new fears. Investigation reveals that zombie goblins are indeed multiplying on the outskirts of the Brinestump Marsh near the Road, but not due to necromancy: An advanced Yellow Musk Creeper (see Bestiary) is growing near the Brinestump Goblin camp, and the zombie goblins are spreading its spores! The party may need to ally with the goblins to put an end to this scourge on every living thing in the area.

I'm also planning to run a slightly modified version of the Chopper's Isle encounter by James B. Cline. I'm planning to drop a red herring or two that Chopper has returned, and he's committing the murders, and that may send the party to investigate Chopper's Isle.

Spoiler:

One major plot change I made is that Katrine is the lascivious daughter of Ven Vindler. While Vindler caught her and a PC in an act of passion earlier (c.f. "The Shopkeep's Daughter" encounter from Burnt Offerings), the two have been continuing their sexual affair for several game-weeks. I plan to have her dump the PC rather harshly for the much better-looking Banny Harker about a week before their murders by the Skinsaw Man. This will cause that PC to become the prime suspect in the murders.

Spoiler:

Another big change I'm making is that I'm colluding with one of my players to have his PC be one of the Skinsaw Man's victims! I'm reasonably certain that none of the other players would suspect that. He'll be taking over one of the lightly-sketched-out Sandpoint guardsmen that's been an NPC for a while. The player designed the NPC.

Hope this helps!

I am now running a party through RotRL (they are near the end of Burnt Offerings) and am intrigued by the Sandpoint Devil. It may be too powerful for low levels, but at mid-level, maybe after the Skinsaw Murders, this may be a good place for an interesting side adventure surrounding this mysterious creature. Burnt Offerings gives you all the stats, so it should be relatively easy to come up with something for this fascinating monster.

I've decided to take a different path in the segue between Burnt Offerings and Skinsaw Murders. It's a very abrupt change in tone from a lot of dungeon-crawling and goblin-smacking to running an investigation a la Call of Cthulhu. So, I'm in the process of writing an interlude adventure to pick up on a suggestion that one of my characters made to Sheriff Hemlock.

My party, being very lawful, have been reporting regularly to the Sheriff and the Mayor, and have been acting in accordance with any suggestions or requests that the town officials make of them. After they finished delving in the Catacombs of Wrath and discovered that the smuggling tunnels have been used for nefarious purposes, the party suggested to the Sheriff that the town should hire miners to collapse the tunnels and cut off this security breach.

So, now the mayor has hired a small crew of Dwarven miners to perform a controlled collapse of the tunnel. The Sczarni smuggling ring doesn't like this, and are going to make quite a bit of trouble. So, I am writing a short interlude session that will involve some more dungeon crawling (back in the smuggling tunnels), some investigation of the shenanigans the Sczarni are up to, and ultimately with a fight against enemies that aren't insane demon-worshipers or goblins.

When I have this written (and after I've run it), I'll put it together in a PDF and post a like to it here.

Oo. Please do. I have a group that is obsessed with the tunnels, and this idea would go nicely.

By the way, thanks to everyone for the fun ideas.

Does anyone have access to the PDF Chopper's Isle encounter by James B. Cline? I have tried going to the link above and it is blocked by my computer security saying that the site is attempting to 'attack' my computer. Does this PDF reside anywhere else less dangerous?

Brining up an old topic! YEAH!

Anyone have access to the Chopper's Isle adventure mentioned? The site is no longer there.

Please and thank you!

Wayfinder 7 has it

Grand Lodge

Ohhh shoot okay I have that! Lol. Thanks

The first time I ran RotRL, I used an old LG scenario, Reckoning between Burnt Offerings and Skinsaw Murders.

The party I'm running through the latest edition is quite a bit different. I'm going to adapt Feast of Ravenmoor (a Pathfinder Adventure). I also might look at adapting bits of James Jacobs' Shadow Under Sandpoint campaign. Some of that has been hinted at in the new Magnimar, City of Monuments book and in the Sandpoint Chapter of Brinewall Legacy.

CJ

I would have liked to incorporate Feast or Ravenmoor into my RotRL campaign, but when it was released, we were already well into Skinsaw Murders. I think it's best played between the two. By the time it would have worked with regard to timing, the party was already 7th level-- far too powerful to run that adventure.

It's still there, the URL has just changed slightly.

"Chopper's Isle" is also written up in Wayfinder #7.

For a very different take on the ghost of Jervis Stoot, check out the campaign journal of James Jacobs' "The Shadow Under Sandpoint" campaign. Really freaky stuff involving a cursed clockwork songbird, Belor Hemlock possessed by the ghost of the Chopper, an amimated idol of Pazuzu, and swarms of carrionstorms attacking Sandpoint like in The Birds. Of course, starting everything up would be an exercise for the reader.

My players have mentioned an interest in Chopper's Isle. I will have to look into these links :)

This is great I was looking for more ideas on sidequests, thanks guys.

So far I have used:

My own short quest involving Tsuto. After he was captured under the Glassworks I had him held in jail while Hemlock was away. When hemlock returned with a few more soldiers from Magnimmar I had one of those soldiers kill Tsuto (exsanguinated with 3 small holes clustered together on his neck) while guarding him alone. This got the players to thinking some vapire was on the loose or something. The soldier in question was a faceless stalker controlled by Ironbriar. They tracked the Faceless Stalker to a cave in Leb's Tors (south of thistlewood) where they found him half covered in a purple moss deep in the cave.

I used Chopper's Isle because it was awesome.

And next session when the party finally starts going to thistletop they run will across the Temple to Erastil with the mad bear cleric from the first book of Kingmaker

I did this. I had Belor looking worried that she hadn't arrived yet but some family escaping from the goblin tribes to the south told him that they had seen her. She had told them to get to Sandpoint and she was going to get another family moving. Belor sent the party down the East Coast road to the bridge that crosses the Cougar Creek to check with the customs agents there. The goblins had killed everyone there and were laying a trap, hiding in the buildings there. The party arrived in time to see Shaleleu coming north, protecting a family from a group of goblins chasing them, about to get to the bridge and the trap.
