PsionicFox's Playtest of the Words of Power

Round 2: Words of Power Playtest

Shadow Lodge

Okay, so I twisted the arm of a GM I play with to let me use this system in it's current form, and I'm playing a Sorcerer (Red Dragon Bloodline). I wanted to try out a few spells to begin with before our first session, so I at least have an idea of where the character can go for some spellcasting. Since we're running an AP, she's first level. Below are what I will consider her 'stock' spells, unless someone tells me they're incorrect for some reason.

Name: Fire Wave
Target Word: Small Cone (2 points) or Small Line (2 points)
Effect Word/s: Burning Flash (3 points)
Spell Level: 1st
Notes: Burning hands, essentially. Can be changed to a line effect. Cool!

Name: Crippling Flame
Target Word: Single (0 points)
Effect Word/s: Flame Jet (2 points), Cramp (3 points)
Spell Level: 1st
Notes: Short-range, 1d4 fire spell that reduces movement speed on a target. Not bad at all.

Name: Sense Magic
Target Word: Small Cone (2 points)
Effect Word/s: Sense Magic (1 point)
Spell Level: 1st?
Notes: Detect magic. But this needs to be a first level spell (according to my understanding of the rules as written)? No thanks.

Name: Aegis
Target Word: Personal or Single (0 points)
Effect Word/s: Force Shield (4 points)
Spell Level: 1st
Notes: Mage armor in all ways that count. Okay.

Name: Hobble
Target Word: Single
Effect Word/s: Cramp (3 points)
Spell Level: 0
Notes: Lets me control the battlefield somewhat, and at will, no less. Done.

Name: Mass Hobble
Target Word: Mass (2 points)
Effect Word/s: Cramp (3 points)
Spell Level: 1st
Notes: Lets me quite effectively change the way an encounter plays out. Can't hate that. But only when I hit higher levels. Oh well, it's something to consider.

---------------------------------------

Thoughts on these spells? I'm especially confused about my 'Sense Magic' spell. It SHOULD come out like detect magic, but it doesn't. I am confused.

Input is appreciated. I'll be making further notes once the game begins, and we go through encounters.

I suspect Word burning makes the Detect Magic cone work out, but again, at the higher cost.
