Male Gnome Alchemist 1

I picture Boomer having just become a Pathfinder and on his first trip out of Absalom since achieving that status, eager to be back on the road and seeing new sights. Whatever route he took to get to this point is entirely up to you.

Cameric Dunstable wrote:
I just need to shop for equipment and put my backstory one paper if the DM so desires.

As long as the backstory is in your profile I am happy, Mikael.

I think the backstory is great, however Cameric has not yet succeeded in convincing the Legion's leaders of adopting any of his proposals at all. On the contrary, it appears they are trying to avoid him by sending him to a remote and dismal outpost in Darkmoon Vale, where his proposals are likely to remain unrealized for quite some time. Such is the respect that wizards hold in the military ranks these days.

Please think of how you will describe the sword at the opening of the game. Where did Cameric acquire it? I have an idea of what its metallurgical properties might include.

I agree with Boomer that bold (or italics) used for speech, with everything else in normal text, is sufficient.

Alas, it looks like this format is popular with people. I can't really understand the reason for it, myself, unless people are looking to make it easier to skip everything but dialogue to respond to. That's the only use I see in it and ... well, that's not much of a use, since I'd rather my posts are read, not skimmed, and afford others the same courtesy. But maybe I'm missing something.

Here it is. The opening post. Not a real start yet. Just some opening background details.
DM Edziza's Darkmoon Adventures.

Rhylis, I now for me its as much about having one less thing to try to remember when writing posts. It's not that I'm looking to avoid reading anything, just that most people not used to that many kinds of text in a single post can find it very daunting just to type it up.

Female Elf Wizard (Conjurer) 1

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. Do you mean to say it's easier to remember to use bold speech rather than ... not using it and just writing as you normally would in a story? I'm confused.

Male Gnome Alchemist 1

What I'm saying is that most forums are not overly friendly to a lot of styles beyond just straight text, and that is probably why most people tend to prefer to straight text most of the time.

Durgan was among a team of Dwarves from the 5 Kingdoms who were in Almas on a seasonal trade mission. He and Cameric now head north to Olfden, en route to Falcon's Hollow. I will make more entries soon to introduce the rest of the characters into the narrative...

Female Elf Wizard (Conjurer) 1

I'm still not sure what you're trying to get at. My point was that I don't think anything but straight text is necessary (or desirable, for me personally, as I prefer a novel-like style).

Sorry, my brain misunderstood you; I am generally in agreement with you in that straight text usually works fine, though I can understand why some people prefer differentiating actual speech and other comments, thoughts, descriptions, and the like.

Rhylis wrote:

The more I think about it the more I agree with Rhylis. Is using different text necessary if we tell our story in a novel-like storytelling style? Not really. That is what quotation marks are for. It just creates more work for us to switch text styles all the time. Besides, italicised and bolded text have conventional uses as well.

I vote for straight text....we'll settle this at the end of the week before action begins.

Male Gnome Alchemist 1

Having never done this before, I will defer to those who have; I can see it working either way, but don't know which way is truly easier.

male Elf Ranger 1

I don't have a strong feeling about emphasizing speech - my slight preference for it may be more status quo than anything else; it's just "how it is done" much of the time. So I'm quite open to trying it without. It'd be easier to not have to format anything, for sure.

Male Halfling Cavalier 1st Exp = 0

I agree with Valaerdrel, But I don't mind doing a straight text style it will be interesting to try something different =)

Male Mountain man Woodsman/6

I've been in so many games with so many text styles and rules, that I'm up for anything. In my own game, I prefer standard text with thoughts in italics, notes to the DM or other players prefaced with OOC (out of character), and shouting in bold. For example:

Durgan takes one look at the campfire ringed with orcs and growls, "I count ten - that's five fer me and the rest of ye can have the leftovers!" And with a battle cry, "TORAG!" Durgan charges toward the campfire.
Hope this bunch of tree huggers can pull their weight else I'm in deep...

Durgan first hurls one of his light throwing hammers as he runs and then will draw his warhammer and wade into melee.

Thats how i've been doing it in the PBP's i'm in right now but I don't mind changing it up =).

Man its going to be interesting actually playing a small character rather then Dming it... Just me lol I was a DM for way to long and sometimes I feel like I forgot how to be just a player! It'll be interesting to be charging people in dungeon setting's.

This is really off-topic, but Rhylis, since I'm guessing that German is your first language (that is, unless you've been transplanted into Vienna from elsewhere), I must say that your English is really quite exquisite! I speak a second language fluently (Swedish) and I've studied five other languages on top of that, but I don't speak any of them nearly as well as you do English. I'm truly envious...!

Female Elf Wizard (Conjurer) 1

German is indeed my first language. It's all a matter of practice, really -- I like watching movies/series/etc. and reading books in their original language, and I've been roleplaying online in English for years now. My spoken English isn't as great as I'd like it to be, alas.

Err. Anyway, thanks!

Your written English is still far better than many people's spoken English, including a lot of people who know English as their first language. So you are doing pretty good, as I never would have guessed it was not your first language.

Male Halfling Cavalier 1st Exp = 0

Rhylis definitely type's better then I do! I know some Japanese from all the manga I read and anime I have watched. But speaking it... HAHAHA fat chance! I need to learn some more languages, I know some German and French but my vocabulary with both is horrid. Plus having nobody to converse with just made it that much easier to forget. =/

But that is pretty awesome how you learned Rhylis :)

I know anonymity is part of the beauty of the Internet, but if we're going to game together I'd really like to know more about everyone (that is, of course, if you're comfortable with that). I'll start:

I'm Mikael, I'm 24 and I live in Southern California. I'm a graduate student at USC where I study early music performance, and to be more precise, I'm a classical singer specializing in Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque music. I'm also an amateur fantasy artist in my spare time (hopefully, I'll get some of my work published in Wayfinder #5, fingers crossed). This is my first PBP, so I hope I'm not too much of a burden...!

I'm in the midwest, turning 30 in February, wondering where the heck the last decade went, and hoping the next one is much calmer. One of my other hobbies happens to be playing with the Society of Creative Anachranism(however the word is spelled). My interests of the medieval period is more general, as I like history overall, but I'm enjoying the archery and the hands on crafts aspect.

Male Halfling Cavalier 1st Exp = 0

I'm Cori! YAY Me >:D I am up here in the cold north of Alaska, USA. 27 Male, expecting a son in April. I work in the oilfield up here and wield a mighty 12lb sledgehammer for 2weeks of every month and flow oil producing wells. I'm a Well Testing Operator and I am going back to college, 7 years too late i know... where does the time go!

My hobbies include medieval fighting, reenactment fighting, weight lifting and D&D gaming for the last 16 years lol xD.

Coldest weather I have ever worked in was -101 *F with 40-60 mile an hour wind speed in the arctic. Try running a boom truck in that weather! FUN TIMES!

Male Gnome Alchemist 1

I finally managed to get an associates degree by the time I was 28, and just in time of the s*%*ty economy to kick in, so don't feel bad, Kornin.

male Elf Ranger 1

I'm Doug, 39, and a college professor at a public university in New York state. My field is industrial-organizational psychology and I specifically study underemployment and overqualification. I also teach courses in statistics. My wife and I just adopted a 6-year old girl from China this past summer, our first child. Apart from D&D, hobbies include cooking/baking, hiking, reading, playing guitar, listening to progressive rock, and learning Mandarin Chinese.

Male Gnome Alchemist 1

I bet your keeping pretty busy with the economy giving you plenty to study right now.

Boomer the Mad Bomber wrote:

I've been studying it since my grad school days, but sadly, yes, it's a hot topic right now. :(

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16

My plan is to get my PhD and just hope that everything will have smoothed over by the time I'm done, but man, it is rough being in the arts these days. Well, actually, any day for the matter.

Congrats to both the new and expecting fathers!

Male Halfling Cavalier 1st Exp = 0

Thanks bud =D Its an exciting time and right now i'm looking into going into Process Technology / Instrumentation so I can broaden my horizon. Its dangerous work sometimes in the Oil Field but it pays pretty darn good and the only reason I stay is because of the pay. But once I get my degree in 3-4 years I will be making 3-4times as much as I do now lol.

It has its benefits but i'm hoping to move onto robotics or more mindblowing fields once I get my Associates in Process Tech.

Male Mountain man Woodsman/6

Howdy fellers, I'm Gary - turned 48 on December 27 - guess that makes me the "old man" of the group! Been gaming since 1982 in junior college in VA and continued on through college and grad school in TN. Moved to NC in '98 where I work as a middle school counselor. Married with a son and a dog, we live near the beach and enjoy the ocean very much. Some of my interests are football, music, guitar, comic books, and good bourbon.

Male Halfling Cavalier 1st Exp = 0

Hmmm slow week, hopefully Edziza is alright ^^;

Yeah, sounds like some of you guys have it together! I've been working the oil fields for about 5 years and most likely goig for another 10+ lol. If I could work somewhere closer to home for the same money (not likely... D:) I would be there in a heartbeat.

My work rotation is two weeks on days, then nights the next rotation, and I work anywhere from 12-18 hours a day for those two weeks and then I go home for two weeks off a month ^^; Its a nice schedule BUT I spend half a month away from home, which will be lame when my kid is born. =/

Well, if by "have it together" you mean" "slowly burying oneself under a mountain of financial debt through student loans", then yes, yes I do, lol.

I think he said the first main post would be Friday, so it's not surprising it's been quiet.

Best wishes to you and the mom-to-be on your little one! :)

Male Halfling Cavalier 1st Exp = 0

Oh so he did lol, thats what I get for not re-reading older posts xD.

Thank you for the best wishes Val i'm definitely nervous and so is my wife but its is going to be a momentous day when April finally gets here! I'm looking forward to it for sure! =)

Sounds like my recent experience with college.

Male Mountain man Woodsman/6

Anybody "seen" our DM? He hasn't posted since January 3rd.

Male Halfling Cavalier 1st Exp = 0

Sadly not =/

Male Mountain man Woodsman/6

A week's absence with essentially only one post (and that for only two characters) makes me wonder...

He did say it would be a few weeks before it really got started.

Yeah, you're right...hopefully I'm just jumping to conclusions.

male Elf Ranger 1

I also hope all is OK - he indicated that we would start up with his first post last Friday. I'm excited for this game and hope it gets off the ground before too long!

Male Gnome Alchemist 1

I'm actually starting to get a little worried; hopefully we hear something in the next day or two.

Male Mountain man Woodsman/6
Boomer the Mad Bomber wrote:

I'm not worried, just frustrated.

To disappear from the boards without even checking in with your players for two weeks is just not good DM etiquette.

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16

Yeah, I'm a little curious myself as to what's actually going on...

Until he shows up a setup a fun little tavern thread in the game section involving Boomer and his adventures on his way to Absalom where people can engage in informal roleplaying.

Male Mountain man Woodsman/6

Somebody please wake me up via email if and when our DM shows up to restart the game or close shop. I'm not going to keep checking this thread. Thanks fellers.

male Elf Ranger 1

That's understandable. While I continue to check here once a day, I am also actively looking for another game since this one seems iffy right now.

Male Gnome Alchemist 1

Boomer has a traveling taven, Boomer's Bar and Grill, setup as he travels to Absalom if you care to stop in there while you look. He has just started grilling the venison steaks. Also, in a couple of weeks I will probably be starting a Serpent's Skull game, depending on how hard it is to render the maps in Campaign Cartographer.

male Elf Ranger 1

I've found a new game, and assuming it also doesn't go silent, I'm going to withdraw from this one. Good luck here and/or elsewhere, folks!

Same here. Tired of waiting for a DM who doesn't care enough about his players to at least let them know he's still around.
