PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Valaerdrel is strikingly handsome, even by elven standards, with features that are well-defined yet soft. His large eyes are a deep violet, and he wears his hair shoulder length, and it is currently colored the vibrant green of mid-spring. Though Valaerdrel generally fits the tall and slender body type of his race, he is somewhat taller and broader of build than the average male elf (6’ 4” and 135 lbs.). Befitting a ranger, he dresses in the natural greens and browns of the forest, and all of his clothing is subtly styled with decorative stitching in the form of twisted vines and leaves.

BACKGROUND:
Valaerdrel hails from the elven kingdom of Kyonin, where he spent the first century of his life as most of his kin do, developing his talents in a variety of directions. His remarkable and varied innate gifts (manifested principally in skill at arms, herbalism, and map-making) garnered the attention of one of Queen Edassseril’s advisors, and the queen quickly sent Valaerdrel abroad, charged with a set of vague, interlocking goals (though all are consistent with her desire to move Kyonin away from its isolationist history).

Since this appointment, he has slowly made his way southwest through Druma, and most recently into the Darkmoon Vale, serving his kingdom while seeking the Brightness. He has also taken to traveling with others headed in the same direction, acting as a guide and escort even in lands new to him.

PERSONALITY:
From the first meeting, Valaerdrel carries an air of calm and patience, befitting one who (barring violent death) has a very long life ahead of him. He is soft-spoken and when he does speak, he is more inclined to ask questions than offer opinions. The hint of a smile often plays upon his face, as if he finds something amusing about the current situation. When something strikes him as interesting, whether a natural event or object or a social situation, he can spend minutes or hours contemplating it, whether out of aesthetic appreciation or intellectual curiosity.

FURTHER DETAILS (bigger spoilers!):

  • Valaerdrel is not expected to report back for a decade or so. Among his goals are the exploration of any abandoned elven sites and the discovery and reclamation of any elven items of any significant age – anything from art to artifacts. This also includes the discovery and careful description of forgotten aiudara (elf gates).
  • He has another reason for leaving his homeland and exploring the wilds alone. Two years ago, his lover of twenty years, Tessara, died mysteriously of an unknown disease. During her illness, Valaerdrel tended her with a fervor bordering on obsession. To this day, his grief occasionally overshadows his generally content demeanor and causes him to lose touch with present events. He also suffers from bouts of loneliness, and his recent tendency to act as a guide is partly an attempt to satisfy his desire for companionship, however fleeting it might be.
  • While Valaerdrel is adept at both blade and bow, up until now he has used them only for training and hunting, and has never harmed another person. When he hunts, he is quick to finish the job, feeling the suffering of the animal keenly.
