Bah! I found my way to the Thalmor embassy over about two hours (I've refused to fast travel anyway on this run) only to find the gate locked.

How the devil do I get in? I want to roll with my gestapo elf homies!

See, I would pay for this as extra content, especially if it links into the save game and made a list of all the books you have in your house. Seriouslly, Bethesda could do some cool stuff with a smartphone companion app to this game.

Thank you for posting this. Ima go read now... but before I do I'd like to share my sharing of Skyrim on new mobile projector I got post-turkey day shopping (was not on sale itself sadly). 100" diagonal awesome (up to what my graphics card allows). I was a dunce and didn't make a video, but Skyrim did not disappoint.

First I treated them to the openning sequence of the game and the run from the dragon. Very dramatic as always.

Second I loaded up my current toon and went dragon hunting to show off the land scape and dragon fights. I quick traveled to a roost where I knew one was one to be... they got to see me totally fail and get frost breathed to death in one pass by an Elder Dragon (in retrospect I should have turned off Master difficulty).

Undaunted I decidced that the next step would be a classic giant hammer hit to the moon. First giant camp I fast moved to was still empty. So I picked on close to Whiterun, oh boy.

So I started antagonizing the giant with an openning Unrelenting Force, blew him into a tree. Now becaue of the way I had rigged it I was actually in another room and streaming the video to the projector, so my friends didn't hear me say "what the hell is that noise" just as a second giant ran up from by blind side and ground stomped, rocking the camera about. They did hear me scream "Ahahha!" as I spun, saw the second giant and all three mammoths coming for me. So now I got a momment worthy of Benny Hill theme music in the making as they chase me around the bonfire.... But we ain't don yet.

Barely into lap one what should appear from the dark evening sky and perfectly cross behind the mass of enraged critters? If you said dragon that would win you the prize. This was accompanied by another rather girly scream from me timed to just at the right momment with latancey for them to have the dragon just appear in view.

So now I got a three way going between me, two giants, their three mammoths, and a dragon. Giant 1 who I shouted at was up by that time and batting at the dragon, Giant 2 and the mammoth herd was still Oblivon bent on crushing my bones to make his meal, the dragon seemed to want some mammoth burgers, and I was still hoping to actually survive long enough to give a good show.

Bless "Become Ethereal", in the 30ish seconds that followed (I know because I shouted twice) it was amazing. Sadly the dragon eventually landed and got curb stomped by the whole giant camp. I lived just long enough after that to show them dragon absorbing effect... then I anti-climaticly got kneed in the face by one of the giants. No club, no fist, just knee... I think.

Thank you Bethesda. Your game can produce absolutely hysterical outcomes at just the right moments. I now totally buy that the footage you showed at E3 of the back to back dragon fights was legit (if culled from a stock of footage taken during production).

Pro-tip for people starting this game, Either level Archery or Destruction schools. You will NEED strong ranged combat abilities. Other than that, go for whatever you want.

Playing an Orc (However did you guess? >_> ) Fighter with Two Handed, Heavy Armor, Smithing, Enchanting and Archery as my 'primary' skills and Alchemy, Speechcraft and Lockpicking. Currently up to level 28, got myself my Companion from Whiterun, Lyda, and myself in Flawless Orc Heavy Armor, both of us with enchanted weapons, armor, rings and necklaces (mine is mostly Health, Stamina, fortify Two-Handed and Archery and hers is .... fortify carry-weight.) And for the most part Blood Dragons just die like mutant pidgeons now.

I still rage furiously and reload when a Dragon kills a villager. "FOR THE LOVE OF MALACATH! You have an iron dagger and ragged pants, STOP CHARGING THE DRAGON!"

Oh, and you can get married! As an Orc, I went out and got myself a wife, but I wanted to ensure my race didn't die out. So I went hunting around the Strongholds. Firey-tempered, quick with her sword and burning to see the world beyond her father's Stronghold, Borghak the Steel Heart offered to assist me once I paid off her Dowry. A short while later in Riften, a Priest gave me a very specific amulet, Borghak mentioned it, a few tankards later and some very enthusiastic arm-wrestling later .... I'M HITCHED!

Although as my dear Borghak mentioned, the ceremony was strange, not nearly enough blood-shed for an Orsinian wedding ....

I would like to amend my post. Brown Dragons are difficult but not impossible (around 10th level they appear), Green Dragons are tough but start to lose their ferocity around level 26. Just encountered my first two Frost (white) Dragons.

Dear. Sweet. Mother. Of. God.

Melee damage from these badboys seems to be double their Green counterparts, they have access to both Frost Shouts and what seems to be the Force Shout. I lost my hireling to a cliff because the second Frost Dragon, crippled and on the ground, punted her off into the wild blue yonder, then chewed me up like a rag-doll and threw me after her.

I swear I could hear it laughing as my bleeding, ruined body smashed with terminal force into the broken mess of Lyda's corpse.

How long can "I hit it with my axe" remain a viable strategy. I'm a Norse Axe and Board warrior, just hitting level 8. Just wondering if straight single-handed weapon and shield remains viable the whole game. I can't seem to hit anything with my bow, except for that dragon on the western tower. Although I think that's because he was mostly distracted by eating guardsmen.

DM_aka_Dudemeister wrote:

Melee, I've found, is great fun for most of the game, but Dragons*, Giants* and some Warlocks can really mess your day up. With the Sword and Board style, get the Elemental Resistance perk asap. Dragons will inevitably strafe your ass, and when the Warlocks/Casters get access to Fireball, Chain Lightning and that bedamned Ice attack (which passes through physical barriers ..... GG, Bethseda!)

*

Spoiler:
With both Dragons and Giants, remember that you can use Shield/Block bashes to stop their big attacks, such as the Overhand Club from the Giant or the Breath Weapon/bite-down-and-shake-you-like-a-rag-doll of the Dragon. As soon as you can get a Hireling or Follower to tag along, they can help pin down mobs so you can practice your archery skills/combat maneuvers. Remember that your strafing can get you our of a nasty strike from the Giants, but Dragons are annoying able to pivot their breath weapon to nearly any angle, and they can bite (which is the worst attack), smack you about with the wings or hit you with the tail, which shakes the ground and stuns everybody.

I fully recommend, if you are going with a shield .... go for Light Armor and the Smithing skill. Also go to Curse Gaming and get the Fletcher mod so you can craft your own arrows. Archery can be leveled slowly at first, but the Companions in Whiterun, assuming you wish to join up with their merry band of misanthropes, have Archery trainers there.

And get yourself a Magic Bow. You won't be able to kill anything one-shotted without a Magic Bow or unless you've put a perk or two into the Archery tree. That said, I fully Recommend putting some ranks into Archery's Overdraw, Eagle Eye and then Steady Hand. It makes sniping a lot easier and also helps deal with particularly agile and/or skittish mobs.

Failing that, get as close as you can via stealth, then sprint up to close range and shoot as close to point blank as you can get.

A cheesy method, but Giants can be useful. Find a Rock about chest-height on a giant that you have some running room on. Shoot a giant, and continue to shoot until he's within 30 feet. Put the bow away and RLF towards the boulder, and get up it as fast as your fingers can fly.

The Giants lack ranged attacks, so you'll be able to get up there and shoot anywhere from three to a dozen arrows into the giant, slowly whittling away his health and raising your archery skill at the same time. Eventually, the Giant will get annoyed and run off (but will not go back to being neutral, watch out for this!) so jump down and shoot him in the ass a few times to get his attention.

Also Giants normally come in twos, so you may want to keep an eye on the top of your screen for the dreaded red blips. Giant attacks can also pass through solid objects, so whatever outcropping of rock you decide to stand on, so long as you can jump back when the giant goes to do his big swing, you should be fine.

I recommend getting as many arrows as you can and try to hunt Stags and Deer in the plains surrounding Whiterun, taking special care to A) AVOID THE G%#-D*+N LEVEL 30-ISH GIANTS, as I found out the hard way, and B) keeping an eye out for wolves and, if the game is feeling particularly sadistic, Sabertooth Cats, which blend into the heather damn near perfectly.

Oh, how I loathe that Dragon. Oh, hey, let's throw you up against one of the hardest mobs in the game while your best gear is likely still the same stuff you looted off the 1st level mobs!

Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaage

With him, Remember to not draw your arrow until the Dragon stops moving. Shoot once, then get to cover. Again, Sprint can save your life in this situation.

DO NOT MELEE THE DRAGON. I don't care how big your muscles are or how you head-butted that Wolf to Death. DO NOT MELEE THE DRAGON JUST YET.

So, run around, snipe the Dragon with Arrows as able or, when it lands, give it a burst of the old double-handed Frost spell, as the Dragon is using a Fire Breath attack, it will take probably 20-30% additional damage from a cold source.

Alternatively, there is an Imperial Bow of Frost from one of the earlier miscellanious quests, not exactly a staggering display of power but it can and will kill most critters in one shot, barring Wolves and Stags, and against the first Dragon will increase your damage considerably.

Bummer, man. Did you manage to salvage a save file?

I havent played since I found out I couldn't go Thalmor. I'll probably find the mages guild questlines then switch back to my Nord, or maybe roll up a thief. (is there a thieves guild in skyrim?)

Fortunately the save is intact, just had to re-install (the bug copied the dialogue file over ten times, over 50 gb, never seen anything like it).

The Thalmor are a part of the main quest, you infiltrate the embassy after you get an invitation to their party, there's 4-5 main quests before that one.

Of these, only 2 had been problems for me (dragon corpses & not giving me their souls 1-2 times only). Now if they can work on fixing why Lydia resorts to her damned Hunting Bow instead of the Legendary Daedric Bow I crafted for her...

HalfOrcHeavyMetal wrote:

If it needs pointing out, I'd say your PC doesn't technically need ranged combat abilities, as Conjuration specialist mages can choose melee or ranged creatures to summon. Plus you do have a follower who can help out as well.

Just wanted to point out there's a 3rd option available. I've never fired a single arrow in this game, and my Destruction spells are no higher than Adept, I think. They don't do much damage w/out the perks I've found, though blowing apart a skeleton w/ a Fireball never gets old. But against leveled opponents...not so much.

Another problem w/ Destruction spells--especially area-of-effect like Fireball--is that you can end up killing your follower. So keep that in mind. I'd be curious how many others have had this worry to deal w/.

It was probably the biggest thing hindering me... until I had a 'Doh!' moment and realized I could gear up my companion with Shock Resistance so that Chain Lightning (usually) just bounces off of her. And suddenly I could spam death at hordes of enemies once again!

I hate followers! The only good uses for a follower are as a pack mule and as dragon bait or a sracrifice.

ooh. I like this idea. My mage thanks you!

I should stop buggering aborting in ruins cause I'm picking up all kinds of random quest items that I can't drop. I've got two of them now, a bow and a dagger.

Good to see them on the hunt for bugs. Although I will miss the oddly appearing dragon bodies for no good reason. Found one in the mages college that was actually quite musical. I'll have to upload the video.

Also on PC, fortunately I haven't hit that one myself.

Don't know why I didn't think of that, but this character build will not be the great Destruction magic specialist. I'll leave that for a future PC. Thanks for the suggestion.

Dragons and giants. Meh.

The most nervewracking thing I've done so far is go amongst bears with Voice of the Sky going.

Even knowing they won't attack while that blessing is active doesn't help when you're surrounded by bears.

Another forum presented quite the anecdote. One player encountered three bears on a mountain slope. He paralyzed all three. They just slid down the slope. Into a bandit camp. Then the paralysis wore off...

Just when I though the game couldn't get any bigger... following the main story line... just... wow... the Dwemer knew how to pick spots.

I was worried about this as well, but someone told me that quest items - despite having a listed weight - don't actually weigh anything. I haven't been able to confirm it for sure, yet, but that makes me a lot less worried about having to get rid of all the random quest-based items that have accumulated in my inventory.

Huh... guess its time to strip down then. Gotta find a place to dump all those potions then.

Someone keeps leaving raw rabbit meat on the floor of mine...

But buying a house is an absolute must if you plan on doing any serious alchemy. Or smithing.

Or if you just have horrible packrat tendencies in games like this....

I just found out that Nirnroots don't grow back while taking on a quest to bring someone twenty of them. After downing a bunch of potions I made with Nirnroots...

Do the Nirnroots at Sarethi Farm grow back? The head of the house did say she's the only person that knows how to grow them properly, but I don't know if that's all talk or not. (how that family manages to sleep with that constantly chiming field nearby, I've no clue)

I'm a bit disappointed that while my primary character has gotten pretty good at removing Thalmor heads, I can't pick them up and throw them over their embassy's walls. Or burn their embassy.

Winterhold is where the mage-types get pointed towards.

The book about the rise of the Thalmor to power is a multivolume piece titled "Rising Threat", written by a High Elf that lit out when it was happening and was ignored by most of the world when he was screaming at them to open their eyes. Pretty heavy on the "Pre-WW2 heartbroken German getting the hell out of Nazi Germany" vibe.

I know there's a historical event titled this, but if there's a book called "Night of Green Fire", that's worth looking for as well. Both books lay the true nature of the Thalmor out clear as day.

I loved the fact they kicked the timeline forwards a few hundred years and completely changed the status-quo. Also that the perpetual 'good guys', the High Elves, turned around and became Super-Magic Nazis.

I love how the 'rebels' have the righteous cause but are hopelessly riddled with bigotry and blind patriotism, while the Imperial-backed Jarls want to rebel just as much, but are wise to the fact that the instant Skyrim fully rebels the Empire will cease sending much-needed supplies and trade will die off, crippling Skyrim's economy, not to mention that the Thalmor will start sending a lot more than ambassadors to spy on the Nords.

It's one of those campaigns I just love to pieces, where there is no single 'right' side to be on.

I just hit level 10. Now I'm a werewolf. Enchanted my Skjor's Skyforged Steel Sword and named it Skyfrost. Inexplicably naming my own weapons became the most satisfying bit of the game. The Silver Swords will pay, but I think I'll still go looking for the old man's cure if it's possible. The Companions seem to be pretty big on personal freedom which is good. Because I'm a g#~~!+n badass sword and board viking and do as I please. Fortunately for Skyrim I'm most pleased when chasing butterflies and picking flowers in heavy armour.

DO NOT JUDGE ME!

Increasing blocking is hard, because you have to wait for the opponents to actually try to strike you, which artificially lengthens a lot of fights. But I need that elemental resistance trait if I'm going to fight dragons and demons, with my basic plan of "Hit it with my Axe!"

Although "Tear it apart with my claws" or "run away on my paws" makes for an awesome back up plan. Werewolves run fast and have crazy good stamina. I should probably buy a house though. I think killing mages is the best way to do that. All of their stuff sells quite well to the right buyer.

I'm a norse sword and board. Level 35. I concentrated on smithing, one handed, heavy armor, blocking and a couple perks in archery.

I primarily use my sword. I use my bow and do some sneaking around (in heavy armor lawl) when I have to but 95% of the game has been done via sword for me.

There have been a couple of tasty boss battles where I have been one shot a few times trying to get up to him but for the most part it's been fine.

I use practically no magic at all other than scrolls that i pick up and the occassional heal.

@psionichamster

That was the first thing I saved for and bought quick. I'm well aware of the value of houses in the Elder Scrolls. I wouldn't have any place to dump dragon bones otherwise. ;3

Just 'bought' the home in Solitude as well... which I think is glitched. When I bought it the game said it took the money from my character but when I checked nothing had been removed, same with buying the decorations. I could unlock all the doors with the key except the backdoor to the porch.

What makes me sad about the Solitude home is the lack of chests on the lower level.

Main quest spoiler:
My fight with Alduin on at the Throat of the World was also glitched, his health wouldn't drop... it was a making me so mad. Luckily it a quit and full reload fixed it, but did something odd by teleporting Alduin to the limit of my vision way, way off Throat of the World.

What do you primarily melee types do for light in caves & dungeons where it's frequently fairly dark? Sure you can mostly see your way around, but I'd think you'd miss chests, urns, ore deposits, etc. w/out a good source of light. I know you can have a lantern in 1 hand, but that seems an imperfect solution once a fight breaks out.

I use the better of the 2 light spells (Magelight?) in the Alteration school religiously b/c I don't want to miss anything. It's also great for revealing trap plates/stones (and rune traps) before I step on them, and can draw aggro from a distance and allow me to prepare. Obviously not what a Sneak-based character would do, but...

I wish we could enchant a weapon to produce light.

Latest patch news:

In the near term, Bethesda is planning to release an incremental update for the game next week, fixing issues with the calculation of magic damage and dragons that fly in reverse. That patch will debut on the PC first, with Xbox 360 and PS3 versions following later in the week. The developer pledged to release a steady stream of updates for the game after the holiday season, rebalancing difficulty and addressing exploits as they emerge.

So an already massive game gets that much easier to make even more massive by handing over the exact same tools the development team created to actual make it?

Does that mean with Steam's integration with the PS3 Mods could get eventually "approved" and become downloadable to the PS3 version of the game? I hold no hope that this will ever happen to the Xbox given how MS has snubbed Valve and Steam integration before. (Not that it really impacts me one way or another.) However if Mods can come to the PS3, and can eventually pull of something like the MannCo store for TF2 (ducks foodstuffs for suggesting paid/premium mods), maybe that will be enough to drive a wedge into the MS lockbox of a Xbox Live system. Money talks, as do angry teens and pre-teens to customer service... or their parents.

The 1.3 patch is out for PC, should follow next week for 360 & PS3. This fixes the 2 glitches introduced in 1.2 (some dragons fly backwards--I haven't seen it personally; and no magic resistance--my poor Breton is experiencing this now, as I have a 360).

Question for those of you using companions: does everyone just use Lydia from Whiterun? I ask b/c I did until recently, thinking all companions are created equally (at least of the same skill set). But after using a 2-h specialist (Mjoll the Lioness from Riften), I can't help but think she's tougher than Lydia, who got the crap beat out of her far too often--and she even had a shield for better protection.

I think the Cohorts/Companions are at different levels, but it also depends upon what you were doing. While there is a 'leveling system' at work in the game, generating stronger and weaker monsters depending upon your actions and levels, I believe the Cohorts/Companions level as you do.

also, are you equipping your companions with gear? Their base-level stuff is fairly crap, for the most part, although something-or-other the Steel Heart (Orc Female, MAH WAIFU!) refused to use any of the (Superior) Orcish Armor I made her except for Boots, Helmet and Shield, but leaped at the chance to wear all of my Ebony Armor.

In fully (Legendary) Ebony Plate, Lydia the Packmule, whom I am convinced is derived from Henchmen stock, enchanted to improve her One-Handed *Gauntlets*, Heavy Armor *Chest*, Block *shield*, Archery *helmet*, Fire Resistance *Ring* and Frost resistance *Necklace* She could pretty much solo a Giant when my character was at level 30-ish.

Slight derailment, anyone know of a martial weapon like the Ebony/Steel Warhammers in Skyrim? Unofficial build the group has come up with is a 2-handed martial weapon dealing 1d8/x3 bludgeoning or piercing damage.

I'm talking 2 different companions w/ identical (mostly Daedric) armor, and the only difference being whether they're 1-h + shield (Lydia) or 2-h (Mjoll). Each had some enchantments to boost weapon damage (necklaces) etc. Though I haven't done too much w/ enchanting b/c you can buy, find, get rewarded w/ stuff every bit as good as you can enchant, and I'm starting to think I've wasted perks in Enchantment altogether...

Anyway, let me narrow my original question: are there players using mage-type followers instead of the default 1-h or 2-h weapon types? I'm planning a more fighter/mage type for my next playthrough, so I don't necessarily need a pure melee fighter as a companion.

Slight derailment, anyone know of a martial weapon like the Ebony/Steel Warhammers in Skyrim? Unofficial build the group has come up with is a 2-handed martial weapon dealing 1d8/x3 bludgeoning or piercing damage.

We wouldn't be on Paizo if didn't some how eventually wander back around to our other hobby at some point :P

keeping detail contained:
Off the top of my head no. The way Elder Scrolls, Diablo, and many other computer video games manage weapons is vastly different then D&D/Pathfinder ever has. The closest layout I've seen was the Diablo 1/2 adaption that was done on the cusp of 3rd edition. They basically ignored weapon proficiencies balance and just did it by direct increases in cost.

My brain wants to say something about a Maul in Complete Warrior, or Arms & Equipment Guide back in 3e. All my stuff is still in boxes and my selfs unassembled so I'm not going to get it out now. However As 2-handed martial weapon, 1d8/x3 is low. That's the current stats of the one-handed warhammer which is mechanically better then your's. Remember a 1-handed weapon can be used in 2-hands for basically all the benefits save an increased damage die.

I would suggest the lowest you'd go is 1d10/x3 or 2d6/x3 based on damage progression.

Actually it's not out of line to rip off the Greataxe stats and use those as the Axes and Blunt weapons are fairly close in the rest of the lineup.

I say
Nord Warhammer 24 gp, 1d10, 1d12, x3, —, 10 lb., B, —

Ebony as a material is a different issue.

And defiantly they deserve both. To bad it's only been out a short time or it likely would have walked away with more.

Edit, what I don't believe is that COD 3 got best FPS. What a load of gas, but fine, let is attract all the griefers and leave BF3 clean and fun. Personally I'm all for giving Skyrim best FPS as well... since it is and archery sniping is so much fun.

From what I've heard, the level of your allies is set based on your level when you first encounter them - so Lydia, who most people encounter earlier in the game, tends to end up weaker than most other possible companions.

I don't believe that's true. Your companions level and improve like you do, they just don't pick perks. Though your theory would certainly account for my problems w/ Lydia.
