In my personal life I've taken to calling this 'smartest person in the room syndrome' & it is likely one of the biggest reasons why my ex & I still can't stand each other. I would say it is much more an Intelligence thing rather than a Wisdom thing. Actually I would argue that high Wisdom in general precludes it, but that could simply be my interpretation of the difference between Wisdom & Intelligence.

Definitely agree about the difference between intelligence and wisdom. Part of wisdom is knowing to always step back and wonder if you might be wrong.

Start of Darkness is awesome. The absolute best part is Xykon's speech to Redcloak right at the end, but there are a ton of awesome moments in it.

Yes - thumbs up on that speech too.

So here's a question completely out of left field, with no bearing at all on recent comics.

At GenCon, I picked up a boon as a reward for GMing that allows me to play a sylph PC in Pathfinder Society. Just for kicks, I'm basing my new sylph character vaguely on Celia from OotS. Not entirely, of course - the real Celia would have the NPC expert class as a lawyer, not any class levels from a PC class. My PC will be more inspired by Celia than based entirely on her.

So here's my problem - PC names in Society play have to be unique. When I went to register the name "Celia" here on Paizo's site, it's already taken. I'm pretty sure she doesn't have a last name in the comics, but I figured I'd ask anyway. Does she have a last name that I'm just forgetting? Otherwise, I'll probably just go with "Celia the Sylph" for my name on the web site, just for uniqueness from whoever already has "Celia" registered as a name.

Why not "Celia Greenhilt"? =P

It's a pretty good speech. Although Rich has said it isn't critcal to reading the daily strip, I would recommend you read Start of Drakness if you can pick it up. It gives you a lot more detail on Xykon and Redcloak that's interesting to understanding what they are doing.

It also made me realize that Elan's right in pointing out to Tarquin just how much he doesn't know about what's going on.

Yeah the books are somewhere in my long list of things-to-read.

Could go with Sy-Celia (as in she's breaking your heart and shaking your confidence daily).

Thumbs up on that point! I missed that comment until now - little slow on the uptake today.

Spoiler:
The final picture of Sabine definitely shows potential for future cooperation... Oh, and her breaking of the screen might have been helpful to the party. Who knows if the fiends were willing to let V go knowing what is happening upwards...

"Knock 'em dead, elf."

Also got more of a laugh out of the last panel than I probably should have.

Sigh, my only thought in reading today's strip is that Rich could have done all that in two or three panels and given us V's return as well.

Rub, rub, rub, rub my father's face in my uselessness! Thunk! Thunk! Thunk!

When Tarquin killed Nale, he didn't lose one son. He lost both of them.

Musings:
I don't see Sabine and the Order of the Stick ever being really friends, but I can definitely see them working together in the short term to bring Tarquin down.

I don't know that they will be able to convince her to fight Xykon and Redcloak, but she will certainly be willing to help find Haley's father and bring Tarquin down.

While throwing snarky comments at each other.

Too true, too true.

At least Sabine never said anything about Haley's boots...

Elan being ignored by his father's soldiers fondly reminded me of the opening battle in Highlander where all the enemies avoid fighting Connor MacLeod.

Well, Nale made it to whichever afterlife they were in. Sabine is clearly sweeping him up.

... I think that’s actually the wreckage of the Blood Plasma-screen that Sabine’s policing-up.

Nah, that's the shattered remains of the TV she smashed.

Given the look on her face, I like my theory more.

If you check the time on those posts, you'll notice that those two people posting the same thing did so within a minute of each other. I'm sure they were unaware of each other's posts when they did it.

You know, we all kept complaining here about how long V was gone, but I went back and looked. It was only 22 strips, and if you look at what happened in those strips, 20 minutes doesn't seem that unreasonable. It just seemed like longer because it was more than a month of real time.

It's not important, and as Josh Wheden said of the top speed of Serenity, "She moves at the speed of plot", but moving entire armies through the desert and arranging them for battle is typically something that takes more than a few minutes...

Silver Crusade

But Tarquin and Kilkil were gone from the Linear Guild for a while before V disappeared - long enough for the dream sequence illusions, at least. The armies were arranged in advance, and teleported in presumably pretty close to their current location. It just means Tarquin and Nale's talk while walking to the crater with the army was pretty short, which we already had reason to suspect. Tarquin saved most of the talk for after they met up with Elan.

Yeah, I didn't check the time-stamps, sorry. ^^

I was surprised when the 3 mentioned they'd be taking V in the future again. I'm guessing each one of them gets him for the allocated time, but, if so, I don't recall that bit of the bargain.

Bottom-right panel of the first half of this strip.

V: And for this, you would have eternal dominion over my immortal soul once I died?
Lee: How would that be fair?
Nero: No, all we ask for is an even trade.
Cedrik: Each one of us will get your soul for the same amount of time that you are under the effects of their Soul Splice.
Lee: So, maintain all three splices for an hour, your soul spends one hour with me, and one hour with each of my two associates.
Nero: Exact order of custody to be determined at a later point.

WHEDOOOOOOOOON!!!!!!!

Oh wait, this isn't the star trek thread. Nm.

Silver Crusade

It was also later determined that the exact amount of time he'd be spending with each of them wasn't the same. One of the souls spliced to V escaped earlier than the other 2, so one of the fiends has less time coming to him than the other two. They did say exactly how much it would be at the time, but I don't feel like tracking down the details right now.

Pretty sure it was Nero who gave him the necromancer spirit, and thus gets the short visit. I think it was like 8 minutes and change versus the 20 minutes of the other two.

Actually, from the color of the bubble I think it was Cedric. Assuming the purple one is Cedric.

So it is. I stand corrected.

In pathfinder necromancer would fit with daemons more.

Yes, but it has been long established that OotS isn't in Pathfinder.

The necromancer was absolutely NE. The sorcerer was CE, and the conjurer LE, bubbles be damned. (Which, I guess they are?)

Well played.

That's why I wrote "in pathfinder (...) would".

Of course, the next question (which will obviously be answered next strip) is where the heck V's body has been all this time. For that matter, same question about the raven.

Fromper wrote:

It won't surprise me if it's not answered, actually. The fiends made a point of saying that the body will be protected from harm, so there's a place for V's soul to return to. Rich might answer that question, but it doesn't seem terribly necessary.

Caineach wrote:

That's assuming his soul doesn't get shipped off to be transformed into a Lemure or something. I'm not entirely clear on how or whether the transformation of souls into petitioners works in the OotS world. All of the people we've seen in the afterlife (at least those confirmed to have been living people at some point) have resembled their living forms (at least their forms at some point in their life).
