For this contest, should the entered item be just a single, invariant item such as Goggles of Minute Seeing, or could it also be something similar to Golem Manual where in fact the described item is a set of items all with a similar theme and mechanics? I know that the Golem Manual clearly exceeds the word limit, but would it fall into some auto-reject/strongly discouraged category which I have not yet seen posted based on the fact that it is not a SINGLE item?
Thanks.

I'd say it depends. By going with a "multi"-item, you're potentially diluting things. But if your core idea is really strong and it just happens to lend itself to multiple versions, then it could still make the Top 32.
A "multi"-item just to be a "multi"-item isn't very Superstar though. I think only one lesser/greater combo item has made it into RPG Superstar in the past. No "multi"-item ever has. So you'd really have your work cut out for you if you plan on going this route. Make sure you're not leaning on the fact that it has multiple versions of itself as the thing that's going to give your item spark.
Also, another piece of advice for this category is to avoid doing another of an existing "multi"-item...like a figurine of wondrous power. Sean already touched on that in an earlier advice post.
Hope that helps,

Hmmm - imagine if you'd thought of a whole class of items like ioun stones! (Apart from the fact that they break screeds of Seans Laws. Blimey - more with every second I think about it!)
Anyhow - that would be a dilemma - choose one and you miss the awe of all the ways they're cool. Choose lots and you dilute your entry/ overrun on words etc. I guess the best route is to choose one and assume the judges and voters will see the potential?
