I'm just getting back into gaming, and pbp seems ideal for me, since I don't have much free time. I quit gaming right around the time the Pathfinder APs were beginning, so I'm trying to get acquainted with Pathfinder by playing (or DMing) all the APs I missed. I'm running RotR, but I don't feel I have time to run another, so I'd like to play in the next AP in sequence, CotCT.
If given a choice, I'd probably play an urban ranger in this campaign, but I could also play a rogue/fighter, sorcerer, monk, or oracle. I'm usually on between 7am and 2pm Eastern time (sometimes to 4pm) and I can usually check in a few times during the day and once or twice in the evening and on weekends, in case availability is important.
If any DMs are considering running CotCT, I hope you'll consider me, and feel free to use this thread as a recruitment thread (well, if you include me, otherwise start your own thread!) :p
Thanks,
Jamie

Talomyr |

I would be interested in being part of group, but not as a DM (I am currently running Council of Thieves and have already promised to run Carrion Crown when it comes out).
I was in a CotCT game for a very short while, but sadly the DM disappeared.
Since that time, the character concept I was using has been broken apart and moved into other characters, so if given my druthers, I would likely strip the last bits of the character concept and build a Varisian witch with the harrowed feat that would eventually move into the Harrower prestige class from the campaign setting.
Here's to hoping both a group can be formed, and a DM can be found.

![]() |

Ive been looking to find a group to play a pbp game on this site since I bought the core rulebook last month. So, if there is still room, id like to play as well. Id be willing to play whatever we might need to fill in the gaps, though Im not a big fan of Bards, so hopefully I wouldnt feel the need to have to play one, lol.
I can generally check at least once a day while at work from 8-430 central, and could probably check in at least once a night for most nights.
Still kinda new to PF, but have played alot of 3.5 in the past, and am doing society play a couple weekends a month right now, so I should be ok.

Latecomer |

I'd be super interested in playing in CotCT. (Not DMing, sorry..., I'd be a terrible DM.) I played RotR with my regular group a couple years ago, but went and had a baby so missed the entire CotCT campaign. We're now playing Kingmaker, and I'm wishing I had time to play a second game. Life isn't that accommodating, unfortunately. However, I'm online M-F 7:30am-4:30pm Pacific, as well as most evenings and on and off over the weekend, so PbP seems like a good medium.
If someone wanted to run this, and if it looked like I'd be a good fit, I'd be happy playing pretty much any class, though I'd rather not play a sorcerer or wizard. (I'm not very good at wielding offensive magic.) :) Fighter or cavalier, maybe; I'd also consider playing a cleric. If it matters, character development and story are the most interesting aspects of any game to me; min/maxing is not my style.
Thanks!

It has been some time since I last DMed (and I haven't had the pleasure of doing so on these board until now) but I would be happy to attempt running Curse of the Crimson throne since there is interest .
The posts on the Play by Post boards have been inspirational , particularly DM organized's Serpent's Skull , the Frostbite campaign and DM Sardaukar's Legacy of Fire and I'd like to thank the groups taking part
I am currently a postgraduate student (based in the UK) and have a lot going on work-wise but since I'm not currently playing in any game I can probably balance my workload with DMing preparation .
The only downside is that the campaign may be some time in starting (a month or so) since my books are at home and I won't be returning home until the Christmas vacation period. I could however purchase a PDF to tide us over until then.
Curse of the Crimsom Throne is really exciting and I enjoyed the Harrow aspect (so I'd welcome the Harrower idea)
I hope this satisfies the demand and look forward to playing with you whilst hoping my storytelling skills will do the amazing world of Golarion justice. Questions and comments welcome !
PS : Anyone care to enlighten me about how to create an alias ? . 7 Players interested so far by my reckoning , is that right ? Sounds good to me as the AP is quite deadly

Allowed source materiel?
Stat buy or roll?
How many point stat buy?
I'm most familiar with the standard roll method , but if you have a concept in mind where point-buy would be more advantageous I'd go with classic 15-point buy as per the Pathfinder core rulebook
Allowed source material . Pathfinder Core and Advanced Player's Guide (which I don't yet have , relying on the SRD document for the base class info) , Curse of the Crimson Throne Player's Guide (Pick two traits , one of which is a Background trait as described in the Crimson Throne Player's Guide)
I think the adventure path would best suit a non-evil party working together but I'm happy to discuss everyone's concepts . Tentatively however I'd restrict it to non-evil characters.

i wanna join. i have an idea for a Tian Inquisitor of Zon-Kuthon. cold hearted, lawful neutral, antisocial, desires revenge against the clergy of Irori. i could flesh it out later. what skill is used for torturing? intimidate?
In theory this sounds possible , though to me a lawful neutral torturer sounds like someone who is employed by the state as a torturer/executioner in the course of justice (and at 1st level is more likely to be an apprentice) . Korvosa is a highly lawful city which makes this probable , but it is the antisocial bit that concerns me
http://paizo.com/paizo/messageboards/paizoPublishing/pathfinder/campaignSet ting/general/veryTouchySubjectClericsZonKuthonShelynGodsLifestyleIssues& ;page=1&source=search#0 < This thread might be helpful (deals with non-evil worshippers of Zon-Kuthon and/or Shelyn)
I hope you'll find this helpful . Intimidate,Heal and Profession : Torturer would be the skills to go to I think . If historical examples are anything to go by executioners/torturers were also often coroners or anatomists in Renaissance/Enlightenment era Europe since they studied the bodies of the condemned.
Using the campaign guide , your character should also have a tie to a minor crimelord called Gaedren Lamm (there are various possibilities listed on pp 14-16 of the CotCT Player's Guide)

Adriean,
Take as much time as you need. I for one am willing to be patient, especially with the opportunity to work towards being a Harrower.
I am happy to go with which ever you feel is the best option, between point buy and rolling stats. Most games of the games that I have been part of on here have gone with the 20 pt buy that is used by organized Pathfinder Society play.
I can help you out a bit, if you need, with the aspects of DMing a PbP.
Thanks for offering to DM the game.

Well, I am still here hoping for a game and love what I am hearing from Adrien. And the timing is fine. Please take the time you need to feel comfortable with the material.
My concept is a human Ranger skirmisher, Senjin. A Shoanti, abandoned by his drug-ridden parents, raised himself on the streets before falling in with Gaedren's gang for protection. Life on the streets means he has done what is necessary to survive, pick pockets and thefts, fights with rival gangs. He was quite good at fighting, but balked at hurting innocents. defying Gaedren one too many times, he found himself ambushed, and horribly wounded. He fled and would have been finished off if not an intervention by a swooping Sable Company member, dropping down to investigate the crowd of thugs in pursuit of a youth.
Senjen has remained holed up, quietly healing, and awaiting a chance to break all ties with Gaedren. He keeps his eyes to the sky, with the dream that someday he could join the Sable Company that he might be able to fly above the filth and violence of the streets. He knows it is a silly dream, but his faith in Desna nurtures that dream.

At the top of your page you will see a link called "My Account". Click on that link, enter your password and you will be taken to you account information page. About mid-way down on the left hand side of the page you will see an area called "Message Board Aliases", there you will see a listing of your current aliases and an option to create a new alias.

Excellent :) Thanks for your support and offers of help .
I have a long experience with RPGs (this is my 12th year of play using various settings and systems , with some successful campaigns) but your help is definitely welcome as I'm trying to get back into DMing and it is years since I last DMed a PbP game.
Meowzebub , it sounds like a great concept and background that fits right into Korvosa and the game. I'm looking forward to it (nice avatar by the way) ! The same goes for you Talomyr , the character is really appropriate for the campaign .
It sounds like 20-point buy is the accepted standard so I'll go with that .

![]() |

Sounds like the game is full, but I'll happily take a standby spot, if one is available. I had a DM disappear on me, and was not accepted for two other recent games, so I have a halfing summoner and a gnome oracle I could tweak to fit the setting.
Hi Torolf . The game is potentially full (I'm waiting for all those who expressed interest to confirm they'd like to play) but if people drop out in the next couple of weeks I'm happy to consider your character on standby

i could change antisocial to suspiciously quiet and creepy.
a nameless Tian female who spent the earlier portion of her life at a remote monastery devoted to irori. bullied by the older disciples. eventually she smiled whenever she recieved the physical beatings, whether by fellow acolyte or by instructor. by the age of 10, she was exiled from the monastery for having masochistic tendencies. a very observant individual she was. noticing every flaw in the clergy. every teaching that they preached but never followed. she greatly increased her observational skill while staying mostly quiet with few words. during the trek to civilization, She met Gaedren Lamm, who sold her as an altar maiden to a small church devoted to Zon-Kuthon. the priests took great note in her skill in observation and her masochism. conditioning her to be an agent of thier faith for the next 3 years. at 13, queen Ileosa of korvosa paid for her lessons as an apprentice torturer at the request that she become an agent of the state. she later at the age of 14, realized that she had been blessed by Zon-Kuthon with the healing gift, a gift she can use to improve ones condition and thus increase the amount of suffering that they can handle. at the age of 16, after graduating the basics of her training, Queen Ileosia appeared and gave her one of many things she desired, a name. no longer was she a nameless tian apprentice. she was now the Torturer Yamiko Kurogetsu. Yamiko spent 2 more years practicing torture as a "Dog of the state"
she would be starting the adventure at the age of 19.

Adrien/DM Amethyst,
You are not alone in having plenty of experience RPGing on these boards. I have been playing and running RPG's for nearly 30 years now, myself.
I will be fleshing out the character over the next few days, but I will give you some of the basics.
Arianna Sirmikova is a Varisian Human Witch. The family's caravan had the misfortune to passing through/near Korvosa about the time one of Gaedren Lamm's men murdered a man who dared cross him.
Arianna's brother, Andrezi was around at the wrong time and was accused of the murder by a local fisherman. Arianna never knew whether Andrezi was blamed out of some prejudice against the Varisians and their wandering ways, or if the man was coerced into his story by Gaedren's men, and honestly she does not care either way. (Framed - Family Honor campaign trait)
Adrianna was eventually able to trick the fisherman to reveal his lie in front of a local constable and Andrezi was released, but by that point the damage was done to the family name, and just added on to the reputation carried by most Varisians.
I haven't picked out the second trait yet, but will soon. 1st level feats will be Harrowed (does this feat include ownership of a harrow deck? I ask because the price 100 gp and will not likely be able to afford it otherwise. If the feat does not include the deck I would be willing to work with you to develop a trait to explain why she has the deck.) Her bonus feat for being human is Extra Hex.
The hexes she will start the game with are fortune and evil eye.

Im thinking of doing a Varisian Sorcerer who was kidnapped as a child, etc, and after escaping his horrible fate when his magical abilities manifested, his goal in life is now to keep other children from suffering the way he did, etc.
Thoughts?
Sounds good to me. Go for it !
Shurken Nekogami
It also sounds like a fitting concept and in some ways is the reverse of Disturbed1's, two of the possible reactions to childhood physical abuse . It should be interesting .
Your character concept straddles two of the traits for 'Unhappy Childhood' in the guide . It sounds more like the 'Religious' one since your character found her calling after a fashion , but 'Tortured' might also fit the masochism side of things . Perhaps both ? Presumably your character still hates Gaelan for abusing her trust (even though he could not predict your character would cope with the pain of being sold to Zon-Kuthon's clergy) ?

what is the point buy allotment? how much gold do we start with? i am thinking of toughness as one of my first level feats, and as my second, i am still undecided. for the rough draft, i will assume 20 points until specified otherwise.

I should apologise as I realise my mentioning how long I've played the game for sounds like a brag , no offense intended if any was taken . The game (and DM) will definitely benefit from the experience of everyone involved ! .
Good backstory and definitely fitting . Reading the feat and the information on Varisian fortune-telling it seems likely that your character learned to read the cards early in her life and so should possess a Harrow deck. Thematically I think it's quite similar to Varisian Tattoo , that is something that is quintessentially Varisian and can be learned about from an early age

Yes 20 point it is , otherwise I am going by the going by the standard rules for point-buy in the corebook.
Toughness would certainly fit (Endurance too) . I'm not sure what to suggest for your second feat but I'm looking forward to everyone's character so far . Inquisitors start with 4d6 x 10 GP
So far we have
- A Shoanti Ranger
- A Varisian Witch
- A Tian Inquisitor
I'll check the thread again tomorrow but thanks for your responses and pleased to meet you and your characters.

Nothing to apologize for, no offense taken, and the comment wasn't taken as a brag. Actually it was quite comforting to know that we are to be working with an experienced DM. The comment about my experience playing the game was just for information purposes.

Fixed, lol.
This is beginning to look like we need some beef.
lol , sorry about that ! I missed it when I scanned the thread and was just coming in to correct it.Thanks for doing it.

This just means we have to be tactically sound. The group that we seem to be building here, we need to rely on controlling the opposition and use hit and run tactics.
What we have confirmed for the group:
- A Shoanti Ranger (Meowzebub)
- A Varisian Witch (Talomyr)
- A Tian Inquisitor (Shuriken Nekogami)
- A Varisian Sorcerer (Disturbed1)
What we potentially have, based on original posts
- An Urban Ranger (Jamie Noone)
- A Fighter or Cavalier (Latecomer)
- ? (Wander Weir)
We will have to be careful, but we do have some healing potential between the witch and the inquisitor. We will also have to make sure that a wand of Cure Light Wounds is one of our first purchases as soon as we are able to do so.

Well in my excitement, I realize I may have stepped on Jamie's plans of a ranger. As the originator of this collection of us, I will adjust Senjin's class to rogue or barbarian, if he feels my concept steps on his character's toes. No problem there Jamie, so let me know.

Celestial Half-Porc |

Awww man, was I overlooked? It is fine if you have a group aleady, but I will still like to throw a concept in.
Damersel the abandoned, Paladin of Sarenrae:
He will have the Religious trait and will have skill points in thieve skills to start, in accordance with his background.

Adrian, thanks for taking up the mantle! I'm confirming my interest, but I'm a bit swamped at work today, so I don't know when I can come up with a character. I was thinking of an urban ranger, but not sure if I'll stick with it. Looks like we need a rogue and a tank.
Meowzebub, I don't see why we can't have two rangers, so don't change him on my account. But, like I said, I'm considering doing something else.

Wander Weir |

Sorry, I've been busy throughout the weekend and hadn't had much time to log on until today. So I never saw that we had a DM willing to run the campaign for us.
I believe Half-Porc spoke up before I did so he should get a place before me. If we're still in the process of being chosen, I'll put forth a character concept. If the list of PCs is going to be as large as posted by Talomyr, I'll respectfully withdraw from consideration. That's 7 or 8 players for one game, and I'm afraid that's a bit too many for my preferences.
Either way, I'm glad to see someone volunteer to run!

Im getting ready to start DMing a Rise of the Runelords game for some friends locally, and from what ive heard RotRL and CotCT have some stuff in common.
Obviously they are in the same area, but me running RotRL isnt going to spoil any kind of plot stuff for me in this game, is it?
I'd like to play in this game and feel I could keep from metagaming, but if you feel, DMethyst, that I shouldnt play, then please dont hesitate to inform me. Id completely understand.

Shuriken Nekogami |

you would be better off not hearing my RotRL experience.
but here is a summary
almost every insignificant combat consisted of me casting haste and the party melee killing everything. and party mystic thuerge taking items from my newly slain pcs to turn into pets. my (mostly) chelexian priestess of sarenrae lost an heirloom cactus to the guy needing an animal companion, my tian rogue lost her messenger falcon to his familiar needs upon death. the useless mystic thuerge got his halfway decent glowing cactus and his actually more useful than him falcon from looting my deceased pcs. at least he never got a chance to take my loremaster's feindish bunny rabbit, whom was a better face than the entire party. complete with snarky one-liners.
my chelexian loremaster provided the buffs that kept the party killing stuff. as well as aoe save or sucks, battlefield control and the occasional summon. these become much more common in Xin shalast. the party was killing so fast, i didn't keep track of what monsters were involved.

No there aren't any spoilers for Rise of the Runelords in Curse of the Crimson Throne , although there is an 'Easter Egg' like minor character you can meet who comes from Sandpoint. So you're more than welcome to play.
Another Ranger or a Paladin (I like the concept of the Dickensian paladin , in fact Gaedren Lamm is very much a nasty (Character from Oliver Twist whose name is censored)-like character and hopefully when we start playing you should enjoy hating him in game as well as in your backgrounds) would give you some extra muscle .
A mix of diplomacy and combat strength should do fine . There will definitely be times in the AP where non-violent solutions are better/more straightforward but I will adapt as necessary to the part's style. The early adventure path is urban (until level 5 or so , you've got plenty of time) but there is also plenty of exploration in the great outdoors to be done later on
I will be adjusting the treasure you find so that you come across healing that might be needed later (if needed) and some of the item-types to match the ones used by your characters but healing items will definitely help the party .
The scenarios are pretty adaptable in terms of the party make-up so go with the kind of characters you'd like to play , provided there is enough of a mix to cover the basics things will work out (extra clerical magic could come from an NPC for example, although characters who can heal and/or have rogue-like skills would also help)
Although the AP is meant for four players , from what I remember it should be challenging enough for six . 7 might be too many , I need to read the full AP again to assess it properly but let's go with 6 as a working group.
Pleased to meet you Wander Weir and Celestial Half-Porc .I understand if the group feels too large for you Wander Weir and look forward to playing with you again some other time.
With the Paladin concept there's one spot left I think . We're not starting until a month from now though so things might change again as we all have different commitments and I completely understand.
It's quite a daunting experience for me as I'm returning to DMing but it should be a good experience and hopefully you'll enjoy the campaign. I'm certainly looking forward to it !

DM Amethyst,
Arianna Sirmikova is essentially ready for play. I will likely tweak bits and pieces of her backstory yet, and may purchase additional equipment as well.

Hmm, thought I posted something here but apparently the post monster is hungry this evening.

Arianna Sirmikova is for all intents and purposes ready for play. I will likely tweak parts of the backstory, and may spend a bit more of her cash prior to the start of the campaign, but mechanically she is done.

Someone mind telling me the formula for doing the die roller on this forum, please?
Sure...
To roll a d20 the expression would be [.dice]1d20[/dice] without the . before the word dice in the first bracket.
1d20 ⇒ 2
To make an attack roll with a + 5 bonus, [.dice]1d20 + 5[/dice] without the . before the word dice in the first bracket.
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Multiple dice, say 4d6 would be [.dice]4d6[/dice] without the . before the word dice in the first bracket.
4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 2, 6) = 16
