I believe the Harpy wanted them dead or would help us if we could defeat them...and potentially we might be chased again...or do we stand and fight this time? Khalid? :)
My action stands. This is a faster way to disable the creature for me; and I can carry the damn thing to the monastery if needs be... Stuck in uni labs and i hate it here. CMB roll-
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26
Assuming that passes, DC to escape the rope is a 29. which can't be beaten by a natural 20 if its CMB is not high enough to get out in the first place.

I think we are better set for battle this time...I say we stay and fight.
DM Dan E |
Don't forget your AoOs, Arjun & Grall! If you can hit it hard enough, maybe you can keep it from getting back in the air.
Nuveril is barely out of sight of the damnable creature before her fear fades and is quickly replaced by anger and shame for having run from a fight. She glances up toward the city toward the sound of the howling hyenas to see if she can spy any lights or movement toward the bridge. Perception 1d20+5 If she sees nothing and the hyenas don't sound particularly close, she will double move back toward the mill and end around D 15. Fatigued round 2/2.
You can't see much. You can hear the sound of hyenas in what you think is the lower town but the cries are echoing and its hard to tell. You neither see nor hear gnolls.
DM Dan E |
First peryton's turn. As the creature struggles to get back into the air, Grall brings his halberd down onto its neck with brutal force driving it down to the ground. It spasms and then lies still, blood streaming from the gaping wound.
Arjun drinks one of his healing extracts. Thats 1d8 + 3.
Holding the remaining peryton down with one hand, Sajan flips a length of rope and deftly hog ties the creatures feet. Its howls grow ever more frenzied, ringing out across the river but that doesn't Sajan from flipping them both over the side of the wall. Sajan floats gently down with the aid of his magic ring while the creature lands with an audible thump. 1d6 ⇒ 4 damage
The creature can't escape on its own so the fight is effectively over. Back to normal time but it will be a factor so I need a clear plan please. A quick search of the mill would take a few minutes. The peryton isn't light (think a great buck stag) nor co-operative so dragging it back to the tannery would also take a while even for Sajan.
Sajan Krama Sumna |
How much does it weigh? Sajan's max load is 350 lbs and even with that he moves as fast as Linah.
Give me a hand with it Grall. Sajan says as he grunts, attempting to carry the wounded, helpless beast. This will make a nice gift for the harpy...

Two hundred fifty pounds odd although thats not dead weight unless you want to beat it unconscious or something. I'm not over egging it, it just won't be trivial either.
Nuveril |
"Will they not turn against her, if they find one hunting bird dead and the other in her custody? She will be forced to tell them about us if she does not take the blame herself. And then the lead gnoll will hurt her as he has before, for not turning us in immediately." She thinks a moment. "Throw the bird in the mill, that its struggle and cries will draw the gnolls' attention along with the light atop the wall; we will lie in wait and ambush them."
Khalid Al Ha'zareen |
"I like Nuveril's idea. We've played cautious too long with these gnolls. Sajan, while I understand wanting to take one of the creatures back to the harpy, I think we should end the beast after it has served our purposes here."
Khalid takes a position, hiding in wait for the gnolls, and urges the others to do the same.
Stealth:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
Nuveril |
"The hyenas will smell us. We cannot count on our ruse to last long. The noise and the light are only a distraction." She crosses to the dead peryton, gives it a contemptuous kick, then picks up handsful of the mud made where its lifeblood ran into the dust to rub over her body, hoping to cover her own scent. "If the bird-woman wants the creature," she tells Sajan, "let her have it when we have dealt with the hyenas and gnolls. It makes no difference to me." She withdraws into the darkness outside the magical light of the shuriken and crouches down in any indentation of the ground or behind any desert plant she can find. Stealth 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Grall |
Grall raged for 4 rounds so he is fatigued for 8. he will draw his falchion and a javelin and put away the Halberd.
Yes, let them enterrr the mill, we should attack them frrrom both sides and trrrap them...as soon as they get close I will yell to them in Gnoll to try and drrraw them in quickly. What do you think about Khalid, Linahrrr, and myself in the mill and Sajan, Arrrjun, and Nuverrril outside?
DM Dan E |
Sajan drags the thrashing peryton inside the mill. As the rest of you are moving into positions in and around the mill you hear, faintly, a low whistle echoing from across the water. The hyenas calls still.
Sajan joins the outside group, hiding himself. Stealth 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
You strain your ears to hear over the noise of the peryton but can hear nothing further. Your acutely aware of the lit shuriken, a beacon on top of the wall. I'm assuming your staying out of the light.
Long minutes pass. The night seems silent...
Grall's fatigue is removed. Linah's bless expires. Please apply any further healing you wish to.

If nothing happens within 10 minutes Grall will beat the Peryton unconscious so it shuts up and then wonders outside to discuss with Khalid going up the hill after them.

Its been about seven minutes when Sajan whispers to Nuveril and Khalid nearby. I hear something! Way over there. He gestures to the east. Something moving..
Edit: About a hundred feet to the east the terrain gets rocky with plenty of vegetation and other places to hide. Included from the post below but I really should have said it here.
Would normally spoiler but not sure if Alex has stopped checking and it is kinda important.
DM Dan E |
Nuveril whips her head around. "They've circled around the river to surprise us," she hisses. Perception 1d20+5
Nuveril examines the eastern stretches, at about 100 feet (the edge of the map) the terrain gets rocky with plenty of vegetation and places to hide. She doesn't see or hear anything.
Note that may be because you missed a DC or because I've already made an applicable check for you and conditions haven't occured to allow you a new one.
Quick and hopefully helpful note on how I see stealth/perception working in these kind of situations.
As you can see from the map the surrounding terrain is fairly open. You can just see the rocks on the map edge. If someone is standing up then they are easy (low DC perception check) to see to someone in their visual range. Your in dim light however which allows stealth to be used regardless of the physical terrain. Darkvision overrides this (at least within its range). If creature A is using dim light to provide concealment to stealth and creature B with darkvision comes within 60' then it will have a similar low DC perception check. If creature A is using physical concealment to hide in then creature B darkvision is not going to automatically prevent the stealth (although it might reduce penalties for the perception vs stealth check). Hope this is of assistance.
Linah Jamil'Kaid |
One channel positive energy before we part and set up the ambush: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 6) = 9
Linah retreats into the and waits, her scimitar still drawn. Not knowing how many the gnolls are she isn't comfortable with the plan, but she doesn't want to contradict Khalid's decision.
Khalid Al Ha'zareen |
Khalid silently waits until Sajan announces that he has heard something. He then motions the rest of the group back to the cover of the mill building...
"Apparently, Sajan has detected some sort of movement of to the east amongst the brambles. What do you all think, should we go 'greet' them or fall back. Sajan, if we fall back I don't think we'll be able to take your prize with us...it will have to die."

You don't get to the talking bit and Grall hasn't yet taken his action knocking out the peryton.
Khalid motions to Sajan and Nuveril to head back inside. As the three begin to move, two black fletched arrows hiss in out of the night. Khalid and Sajan are hit, Khalid in the left arm and Sajan in the ribs.

The arrow fire seems to have been some kind of signal. There is another whistle and a dark tide comes into sight from beyond the buildings on the other side of the river and boils on to the bridge. A mass of hyenas pounding across. It looks like two groups of four, the foremost covered torso to neck in crude leather barding.
At their rear comes the biggest hyena you've ever seen, a great brute easily twice the size of the others. Riding it and driving the other hyenas on is a tall redish brown gnoll. Unlike the other gnolls you have seen this one is armored in steel: breastplate, helmet and gauntlets and it grips a strange weapon, two metal bars linked by a chain, the ends bear short but wicked looking spikes.
It shouts in gnoll.
Kill all but the priest! For Kardwann and the Kulldis!

- Notes
Dim light conditions provide 20% miss chance.
Its not easy to tell but the arrows seem to have come from the general vicinity of where Sajan pointed, the more rocky terrain about 100' to the east of the entrance to the mill. Khalid, Sajan and Nuveril may make another perception check at this time to try and pinpoint.
I will put the map up when I get home tonight which will give you a close up of the terrain. For reference the lead hyenas are on the bridge.
Had to make a decision on lighting here as Khalid and Sajan moved toward the entrance. The entrance is obviously in the radius of the light spell but with the shuriken on the roof some of the light is being directed upwards. I've elected to split the difference with a 10% miss chance at the ground level.

I am Ok with you staying where you are and in stealth. I gathered you were taking a lower profile which is one of the reasons you wern't an arrow target.

@All. Nuveril has clarified that she wanted to stay where she was and in stealth which is consistent with her posts and fine by me.

Round 1, initiative 4
Linah reaches out to imbue Grall with the divine might of Sarenrae. "Stand fast, the dawnflower will see us through this battle. Let us strike a mighty blow against Lamashtu and her minions!", Linah calls out and starts chanting a rythmic melody as she prepares for battle.
Move up to Grall and cast Bull's strength (duration 30 rounds) on him.
Will cast Bless on my next round.
Grall |
As the GGH (Gnoll Growth Hormone) takes hold of him, Gralls muscles bulge and become almost hideously large, the studded leather straining to keep the beasts within contained...
Today, the Gnolls will learrrn true fearrr, we will rrrip them frrrom aparrrt frrrom nose to gullet!!!
DM Dan E |
Just a note. I'm happy for the people inside the building to play with their placement based on where they think they should be when the action started. It shouldn't be a disadvantage ie if Linah wants to start adjacent to Grall so she can bull strength and move thats fine just indicate in your turn 1 action.

Reacting quickly, Arjun moves to the doorway (S28), preparing a bomb and readying to throw it.
The gnoll rider delays to act with his mount.
Another black arrow arcs out from the rocks at Khalid but this time falls well short.

Howling in a great cacophony of noise, the hyenas bound across the bridge and over the open ground toward the mill. Of the four in the lead group, three throw themselves at Sajan and Khalid snarling while the forth, seeking to circle around the pair, stops short as it scents Nuveril and howls to the others. The back group runs in closely behind.
As the leaders close to thirty feet, Arjun flings his bomb. His throw is off target, veering to the left, but the bomb fortuitously lands next to the hyena approaching Nuveril, showering it and the one following with fiery droplets. Both manage to avoid the worst of it but are clearly unnerved by the fire.

The hyenas close in around those outside, two darting between Sajan and Nuveril to menace Arjun.
Surrounded by hyenas, Sajan weaves between snapping jaws. Timing his movements, he snaps onto the front foot, lashing out at one of the hyenas flanking him with his fists. He hits it with brutal force, leaving it on its feet but clearly staggered.

I likey high rolls! However, I can't use ki for its normal purposes yet until I hit 4th level- can only use for 3rd level Ki Mystic purposes. Good luck all!

Hmmm I didn't realize they would be here this round. Grall would probably change his action to attack the enemies right outside the door.
Do you mind if I change my action since the map is now updated and I should be able to clearly here/see the group right outside?

Ah interesting. Without giving it a lot of thought I assumed getting all your ki powers a level early was just an archtype feature. No dodge bonus.
