Tempest slices easily through the peryton's left front leg. Khalid very nearly over-balances from the strike but keeps his position with some last minute corrections.
The peryton lets itself fall to the top of the wall level before rising up on its back legs and attacking Sajan in a flurry of horn and hoof. The monk takes a deep cut to the shoulder but manages to dodge backwards before the creatures hooves.
Antler 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20 hit
1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Hoof 1 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 miss
1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Hoof 2 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13 miss
1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
The creature then moves back five feet, flapping its wings slightly to keep its balance on the narrow section of wall. (G,21)
Arjun is up. Don't forget where the light is. Map is up.

I am a little confused, how could the wounded Perton withdraw, it still has the grappled condition, Sajan was just unable to pin it on his turn? Doesn't it need to try and break the grapple again in order to try and move away?
Once you are grappling an opponent, a successful check allows you to continue grappling the foe, and also allows you to perform one of the following actions (as part of the standard action spent to maintain the grapple).
The check to maintain the grapple is also the check to pin. If you succeed you maintain and pin. If you fail the grapple breaks. In this case the check was failed (just). There was an interesting (and unstated) rules issue on whether the +5 bonus for grappling in successive rounds applied to the pin check. My gut feeling was that having grappled as part of an AOO Sajan could pin but the +5 wouldn't kick in until next round as the peryton hadn't a chance to break free. I was prepared to hear an alternative argument from Alex but assume he agreed given he didn't include the modifer in his check. Thats probably more than you wanted to know but something I was going to stick in the ooc thread anyway.
Edit: Eh quick forum search is turning up arguments that you can't grapple on an AOO at all as it requires a standard action rather than a melee attack. I think this was fine in 3.5 but perhaps a change in pathfinder. Alex?
DM Dan E |
I would also agree on the AOO grapple...kind of like disarming as part of an AOO...makes sense, sorry I forgot about the adjustment from 3.5 to PF in grapple actions.
Oh don't worry about it. One of the first things I did when I took over this game was read the grapple rules completely through about three times because I knew Sajan was going to be specialising it. Still obviously haven't got them 100% right.

Don't have my books in front of me, but the prd (on Paizo's site) says:
Performing a Combat Maneuver: When performing a combat maneuver, you must use an action appropriate to the maneuver you are attempting to perform. While many combat maneuvers can be performed as part of an attack action, full-attack action, or attack of opportunity (in place of a melee attack), others require a specific action. Unless otherwise noted, performing a combat maneuver provokes an attack of opportunity from the target of the maneuver. If you are hit by the target, you take the damage normally and apply that amount as a penalty to the attack roll to perform the maneuver. If your target is immobilized, unconscious, or otherwise incapacitated, your maneuver automatically succeeds (treat as if you rolled a natural 20 on the attack roll). If your target is stunned, you receive a +4 bonus on your attack roll to perform a combat maneuver against it.

The argument seems to go that for example disarm and trip say specifically they can be performed instead of a melee attack while others such as grapple and bullrush require a standard (or charge in the case of bullrush). At first glance that does seem to mesh with your bolded bit (and the words following it). As stated we will sort out for the future but continue this combat as is. If we did something wrong its the perytons that have been mildly disadvantaged and I'm OK with that.

Please just assume I follow happily along with the majority at all times, I really don't have the time to post until my third year project is in. This will (hopefully) be on May 4th. I'll continue to take actions this combat but after that i will be unlikely to post until then.
As for the grappling, i'll accept whatever ruling I don't honestly have time to make an argument. My knowledge of grappling is sprinkled with 3.5 so you probably can't make grapple as an AOO anymore.
Stepping to H5, Sajan once again lunges for one of the Perytons, grabbing it with brutal strength.

Round 3, initiative 16 Bless round 3 of 30
Linah takes a step back and draws her scimitar to try and shield Arjun should one of the peryton's try to charge the alchemist. She reaches behind her back and recites a prayer to grant Arjun's next attack the Dawnflowers guidance.

@Linah: Yes, it's just the three of us on the ground now.
Nuveril sees an opportunity to draw one of the creatures down to her. Stepping out in the open between the two, she waves her hammer and madu. "Down here!" she calls. "Come and fight me!"
Move to I 16; Ready an attack. I'll just keep using the last one I rolled, if that's all right. I forgot to add the +1 to hit from bless, though. That's a 22 to hit and a 7 to damage.

The flying peryton shoots toward Nuveril but insultingly passes over her head and out of her reach. As it passes it casts some kind of shadow, even in only the moonlight. The shadow runs over her and she feels a chill ...
You can feel some kind of connection with the beast. You can feel its rage, its hatred. It desires nothing but your death. You feel an unatural fear grip your heart... No effect as yet.
Ranged touch 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22 hit

Khalid steps in and taking advantage of Sajan's efforts lands a stinging cut.
The grappled peryton struggles mightily to escape, buffeting Sajan with its wings and forcing him to release his grip or be blown of the wall.
Grapple escape 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25 pass
It flies backwards and out of reach taking up position on the top of the wall out of the radius of the shuriken light. (G,26 ten feet of the ground on the top of the wall).
That gives AOOs to Sajan and Khalid.

Linah moves around to the side of the creature, slashing away with her scimitar. She manages a few light grazes through the creature's side. The cold iron blade does not appear more effective than normal steel here. No flank as Arjun moved away plus he doesn't threaten with a crossbow, but you still managed a hit.
Finally able to get into the action Nuveril rushes in to take a position opposite Linah. She lashes out at the flier with her hammer but is hampered by the darkness and a seemingly clean strike missed by inches.

Nuveril |
Well, it's better than panicked; at least she doesn't have to drop her weapons. The only magic weapon at ground level is about to be taken out of the equation, though.
As the peryton's antlers rip into her flesh, Nuveril's will to stand and fight melts away. "I signed up to fight gnolls, not spirit creatures that speak in my mind!" she shrieks, turning and dashing past Arjun back toward the bridge.
She dropped out of rage and is fatigued, so her AC is 17 against the peryton for AoO. With any luck, she'll meet up with something coming down from the town to investigate and have a chance to redeem herself somewhat, depending on how long the fear lasts. Double move back toward the bridge. Fatigued round 1/2. Frightened round 1/?
DM Dan E |
OK going to push things along.
Energised by his extract, Arjun moves like he has all the time in the world, dropping his crossbow and unslinging his quarterstaff as he moves neatly to the side of the peryton and precisely jams the staff between its back legs. The beast lashes out with its antlers, grazing the alchemist's forearm but goes down thrashing. It is prone.
Trip 1d20 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 20 ⇒ (19) + 2 + 1 + 1 + 20 = 43 (guidance, bless, truestrike)
AOO gore 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19 hit
1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Sajan finally manages to pin one of the beasts, taking hold of the base of its antlers and forcing its entire head down. It continues to struggle but is immobilised for the moment.
Grall hits the ground running, barely slowed by the ten foot drop, and plunges the halberd's top spike into the prone peryton's side. Badly wounded, its howl is now more of a yelp.
Linah emits a strong healing pulse. This will get everyone but Khalid and Sajan.
Overwhelmed by fear and still feeling the peryton's talons in her mind, Nuveril bolts back toward the bridge as best she can given the premature end to her rage.
The peryton lashes out as she runs, slashing her badly across the back.
1d20 + 9 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 9 + 2 - 4 = 21 hit

Fortunately the fear fades quickly and she finds herself back in control. Only one round duration.
