Linah Jamil'Kaid |
Edit: Scratch what i wrote before, i just skimmed the posts earlier this morning since i was on a tight schedule. I have now reread and noticed that the gnoll has spotted us. Sorry about that.
Linah emerges from the darkness with her scimitar raised over her head. As she prepares to strike her opponent the unexperienced cleric looses her footing and drives her weapon into the soft ground in front of the Gnoll.
Move action to get closer to the Gnoll (i was to far away to charge right?)
Standard action to charge the last bit [AC14 for one round]
Attack roll: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 4 + 2 = 7
Damage roll: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
DM Dan E |
To clarify, is this still a surprise round, or have we gone straight to round 1 since the gnoll seems wary?
** spoiler omitted **
No surprise round, its round 1.
Linah you can charge, double movement and then a hit. For future ref though charge is a full round action and you can't stack it with a normal move.
Grall and Sajan are currently taking free actions so still have some time to fill in. Sorry I'm being anal about the order but it is not impossible they will do something to affect the rest of you.
DM Dan E |
I've amended the annotated map if anyone is still confused. Apologies but I think we are going to be going into our hiatus fairly shortly. You are on the verge of a complicated fight and I may or may not have time to prepare a map when I get into Paris tonight. Flight out is tomorrow night. Still let us proceed as we can I'd like to get you to the cliffhanger :)

D'oh, seems like i can't get anything right today. I was sure that charge was a standard action. I guess there is still a bit of 4E left in me.
DM Dan E |
OK I was clearly overthinking things.
Linah, Khalid and Nuveril are on the gnoll before it can do more than blink. Linah nearly off balances herself with a lunge but Khalid is there moments later and scores a stinging cut to the gnolls thigh. It arches back, a cry about to escape its lips, when Nuveril's hammer takes it in the face, pounding it back into the wall and it slides limply to the dirt.
You can make perception checks as you wish but after half a minute or so with no cry from the gnoll you can assume your companions were successful.
After a minute or so of silence the patrol is clearly concerned.
You hear one gnoll call out
DM Dan E |
The non-ambushers continue to wait, patiently. :)
You are an ambusher unless I've missed a post saying you are with Grall and Sajan in which case you owed me a stealth check. You were allocated initiative above and I talked about the sound of your bomb throwing :). I'm not super stressed if you want to be somewhere else though you haven't taken any actions.
DM Dan E |
Fine to remove the body, no significant penalty.
You heft the gnoll between you, moving back into the slave market.
The remaining gnolls seem to be conferring but they are much quieter this time and you have no chance of hearing them.
After a short pause, the gnolls start to call out, their cries, thundering over the still. What sounds like a call to arms followed by the same word over and over.
UP KULLDIS! UP AXES! PREY TO HUNT! PREY TO KILL!
And then, in unison.
KEZURKIAN! KEZURKIAN! KEZURKIAN! KEZURKIAN!
Almost immediately there is an answering cry from the west, a low pitched bleating scream. Something is coming....
Just had an hour saga at the airport which started with them telling me I couldn't fly and ending with me being upgraded to first class. Will be off-line for the next 36 hours or so but we are not going to get very much further without map updates. I should get my cliff hanger though :)
Nuveril |
I believe Arjun is choosing to not participate in the ambushes due to the non-stealthy nature of his usual attacks; correct me if I'm wrong, Tanner. But, yes, he should be reading the "Ambushers" spoilers since that's the group he's with.
Nuveril quivers with excitement as the unfamiliar sound comes closer. "This just got a lot more interesting," she whispers, clutching her hammer.

Oh thats fine of course.
To clarify your free to declare your actions but if they involve getting into LOS of the gnoll patrol or other offensive activities we go straight to combat. A fresh one as the ambushers have ended their short one.
Nuveril |
Linah Jamil'Kaid |
Linah stares into the space that a mere second ago held the figure of a gnoll looking down at her, it's teeth bared. It takes a few moment for Linah to regain her composure and help drag the creatures limb body back into the shadows.
"What are they saying?", she whispers with concern shining through both her voice and from her eyes.
Nuveril |
"What are they saying?", she whispers with concern shining through both her voice and from her eyes.
"'Blah, blah, we're all going to die, yip, yap.' Who cares?" Nuveril moves back toward the crack to take a peek at what is going on in the main street.
DM Dan E |
From their respective vantage points Nuveril, Khalid and Sajan can see the gnolls retreating slowly west up the main path and those that have them have unlimbered their bows. They are 30 feet west of last position.
A few second later you all hear a resounding hollow noise coming from the gate house on top of the hill, some kind of alarm.
Khalid and sajan are at the corner. I have everyone else in the snake bulding. I need two rounds of actions from everyone spoilered pls.
Linah Jamil'Kaid |
Spoilered from everyone or just from the ones in the other group?
"What is happening?", Linah whispers uneasily. Linah tries to steady herself and waits.
Linah's actions the following two rounds
Linah will follow Khalid's lead. If it looks like there is going to be a battle Linah will cast Bless, waiting if possible to get everyone within radius of the spell.
Nuveril |
Arjun Srivastava |
1. Arjun waits so that he will be in the rear of the group. He readies a vial of frost bomb in his hand and says a brief prayer to an appropriate Vudrani god.
2. He ventures out and tries to keep the rest of the group between himself and potential enemies.

Khalid Al Ha'zareen |
Round 1:
Hearing the alarm, Khalid steps out of the building, tossing a rock to get the attention of the two scouts, then motions for Grall and Sajan to come back to the rest of the group.
DM Dan E |
And we are back in business.
With the gnoll patrol now out of sight and with the hollow booming from the gatehouse sounding in their ears, Grall and Sajan retire clockwise back around the slave market to rejoin the rest of the group.
As they near the SE corner they hear Khalid's thrown rock and as they round the corner they see the man himself motioning to them, Linah close behind. The four regroup at the entrance to the market and sensing imminent danger Linah incants a quick prayer of blessing, divine power infusing the group. Arjun stands just inside the entrance, a vial of crystals floating in some liquid ready in hand.
Nuveril tries to sight your foes through the crack but her field of vision is narrow and she sees nothing.
It sounds as if the Kuldis are mobilizing. Yips, cries and the ring of steel sound from the upper town although you think it would likely be several minutes before the gnolls could hope to descend in force. You hear the gnoll patrol but now they seem to be moving forward again: toward the side street to the west of the market. This doesn't seem to make much sense until you hear a loud CRUNCH as something heavy lands on the roof of the market, toward the NW side. Barely breaking stride you can hear it running rapidly across the roof to your position, clay roof tiles cracking with every long stride.
If your intention is flight, it seems as if you will first need to fight your way clear...

Notes
- Map is up on the site.
- Corners are blocking LOS as you would expect. Nuveril's field of view is shown on the map. The roof of the market is about 12' high, you cannot see anything incoming from your current vantage point.
Nothing is apparent before Grall's action.
Grall |
We must go before the cities guardians fall upon us.
He leaps out, tumbling through the entrance
Tumble 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19 and readies an action to aqttack any enemy that moves within his reach.
Attack 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 5 + 1 = 8 damage 2d4 + 3 ⇒ (3, 1) + 3 = 7

To clarify, as per the map, from your posted actions I have Grall, Sajan, Khalid and Linah just outside the entrance with Arjun just inside (he declared he was bringing up the rear) and Nuveril inside at the crack in the north wall. If this seems wildly contrary to your expectations then sing out but please bear in mind I've put you into combat basically when you heard something landing and running on the roof so no foreknowledge of that please.

Sorry, didn't get a chance to look at the map since I had just finished building a new PC for myself and didn't want to hold folks up. Amend action to move 40' south and ready same action, even though it will miss :)

Not a problem although that will have you banging into the wall south. Do you mean sw? That would allow you to see up the side street as well as give you a better vantage point on the roof although it would leave you fairly exposed.

Assuming we are going out the way we came in...to maximize our cover. Khalid can yell at us to take a certain action if he wants and Grall would follow his lead...
DM Dan E |
You split up, Khalid, Sajan and Nuveril using the available vegetation along the river to reach the more solid cover of the partly ruined buildings in the south east of town. BE 40 or so.
Nuveril moves easily and agilely through the ruins while Sajan, despite his size, makes barely a whisper of noise, every footstep placed perfectly. Khalid has more difficulty, at one point crunching a few shards of pottery underfoot, but still you think any watcher would have to be close to notice your passage.
The rest of the group follow but keep a reasonable distance behind. 150 feet is ten squares on the map.
The lead three make their way along the line of buildings adjacent to the river, slipping through a gap in two on the way to the building where you fought the snake two days before. [snip]
The gap you took is P-32 on the battle map (BJ-30 on the main map) although there is a mess of buildings just south of that you should be able to see on the main map that you might be able to work though as well. The river is a little bit further to the east off the battle map. East would of course take you directly away from the gnolls you can hear but you may be a bit strung out with Nuveril still in the building....
Khalid Al Ha'zareen |
I like the way of going out the way we came in...we know the lay of the land that direction, other directions not so much.
"Grall, let's go. One of us will take point while the other provides a rear guard for our retreat."
Khalid moves toward the P-32 gap.

Round 1, initiative 18 - Bless round 1/20 @DM - you can take away from this depending on how many rounds have expired from the time i cast the spell to now
Linah runs to the entrance where Nuveril and Arjun are hiding. "We need to leave, they know we are here!", she calls out as quietly as she can while keeping an eye on the rooftop ahead of her, ready to lash out with her scimitar should a hostile creature come into reach.
Move action to move 4 squares to S22
