Sorry; this might be a double post for some of you, but I can't see this post I just made unless I reply to it. Roll was an 18, if it's not showing up.

"Don't worry, we don't need to light the monastery on fire to bring him out." Reaching into his belt pouches, Arjun withdraws a vial, shakes it, and tosses it through the hole.

Arjun attacks the hole with a frost bomb. I would roll an attack roll, but I'm kind of firing blindly and hoping for a splash hit. Perhaps try to land it 5 feet from the edge of the hole on the floor above us?

These side rooms than run off the nave are about normal ceiling height, about ten feet. Some rooms and areas had different dimensions as per their descriptions from earlier.

The nave and chapel are slightly more than double that.

That roll is fine to get on the roof, boosted or not.

This section has a peaked tile roof. You can see a seperate higher roof section for the nave to your west. To the north west you see the chapel roof, a dome. There are holes of various sizes in each of these. Looking north you can see the chapter house (stirge room), a protruding rectangular section with its own flat roof about ten feet higher than where you currently stand. To the east you can see the partially collapsed tower. It would have perhaps been about fifty feet high originally but about thirty five feet remains.

Please see above posts :)

Apologies for any confusion originating from me. I think next time I'd just re-post the description but I don't like to easily steal that Ah ha! moment.

The room opposite from the kitchen was obviously once a mess hall. Three long wooden tables and dozens of chairs are in shambles, mostly rotted away with the passage of years although one of the tables and a few of the chairs seem useable. Light shines through several large holes in the ceiling, illuminating a closed door on the east wall which leads to the room the pugs and hyena emerged from. The south wall is stained from infrequent [rain].

While the rest of the group is wrestling with the holes and the roof, Grall will continue witht a thorough search for unusual tracks leading away from the monastery. He will just take 10's as needed to give him a 21.

"I believe this requires more investigation." Arjun steps back and allows the more perceptive and stealthy in the party to go forward.

You climb up and see the same thing Nuveril does. See post above. The two of you up there together is a little precarious but you take care to spread your weight as much as possible and stand on the wall sections rather than the unsupported roof.

You find a tuft of what looks like coarse black hair hanging from one of the jagged edges surrounding one of the holes in the ceiling but cannot locate any other signs of a creature passing on the roof.

Meanwhile Grall circles the monastery looking for clues. In terms of time, he is quite a bit behind the two on the roof.

Female Halfling Barbarian (superstitious) 7 | hp 72/72 (86/86 raging)

"It must fly in!" Nuveril exclaims, frustrated. "But even then, it ought to leave some trace where it lands ... unless it's that witch's demon lover coming back for the rest of us."

Khalid carefully moves to get a closer look at tuft of hair.

If something is seen, here is a knowledge check, I'm assuming nature, since it was nature before, but all of Khalid's knowledges are at the same level (arcane, dungeoneering, nature, planes, and religion)

Knowledge(Nature):1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7 +2 more for identification.

EDIT: Well at least I'm getting some the bad rolls out of my system...I hope.

Neither Nuveril or Khalid find anything else where they are.

Khalid you can't make out anything definite about the hairs.Other than they are gross.

Grall meanwhile is about half way through a check of the eastern wall of the monastery without any success so far.

Female Halfling Barbarian (superstitious) 7 | hp 72/72 (86/86 raging)

Let's check the rest of the roof while we're up here; I assume we've just been looking at the main area. Nuveril will attempt to climb the 10 feet to the top of the stirge room and check up there. Climb 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19 Perception 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

With some care, Nuveril clambers across the roof toward the chapter house.

She makes it safely, easily finding handholds in the blocks of stone making up the top half of the room and is soon standing on top of the chapter house roof. The roof itself here is intact and seems pretty solid and aside from a comanding view of the surrounding hills and Kelmarane to the north she spots nothing out of the usual.

The ground floor map gives you a pretty good idea.

Nuveril climbs down to the main roof level with ease and then makes her way west to the base of the nave roof. The going here seems much more precarious, the nave roof like the nave itself is in poor repair. The pitched roof is fairly steep.

Make me another climb check if you want to climb to the top of the nave and an acrobatics check just in case...

Will wait and see what Khalid is doing during all of this. Grall is about half way around the monastery. Still nothing of note.

Really more of a statement on your +8 to climb vs. Khalid's +0 (while armored).

Human Cleric 7 | hp 36/51 | channel 6/7

"Have you found anything?", Linah calls out the explorers through the hole in the ceiling.

Nuveril navigates the difficult conditions with ease, moving quickly and purposefully up the roof plane until she stands on the peak, along with the top of the chapel, the highest point of the roof.

She sees several holes, corresponding with what she would expect from the ground but nothing else.

You've basically traversed the roof at this point with the exception of the chapel but you can see that from here. No sign of any lair or nest.

Two climb checks to get down please assuming that is what you do.

Female Halfling Barbarian (superstitious) 7 | hp 72/72 (86/86 raging)

Is there any way into the ruined tower from the roof? There could still be something nesting in there and coming out onto the roof at night. Climb back to the main building roof 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22 If no entry/exit to the tower, climb to the ground 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9 If there is any way into the tower, Perception to examine it for tracks/sticky residue 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17

EDIT: There's that natural 1. At least it's for the climb to the ground so she can't crash through the roof and make a new hole.

You climb down to the main building roof.

The tower is partly collapsed. The top part has simply broken off. So you could in theory climb up the outside twenty feet or so and in through the top although if the whole lot went you could be falling thirty feet to the ground admidst a heap of stones...

Alternatively you will recall that it is somewhat accessible from the bottom. You walked past the shaft on the way down the stairs

DM wrote:

The left section is the lowest (and now only) chamber in what was once a 40-foot-tall tower. Most of the wooden floors and the old ladder that used to comprise the tower jumble the floor here in a collapsed
mess or ruble about ten feet high. The roof of the tower has partly collapsed leaving gaping sections open to the sky but it is difficult to see much in the mess of remaining beams and fallen building.

Your call as to what you would have done without knowing you roll a 1 on the next climb.

Female Halfling Barbarian (superstitious) 7 | hp 72/72 (86/86 raging)

Mmm, she was really checking for holes in the side of the tower. Would she climb up the outside of an already-crumbling tower? Let's leave it to the dice. 1, she climbs up from the roof; 2, she decides to leave it and examine it from the inside. 1d2 ⇒ 1

Nuveril makes her way over to the tower and starts to climb. She is about six feet into it when a section she was using as a handhold comes away in her hand and she falls fbackwards to the main roof.

She lands on her back, winded but uninjured. Your slower movement rate helped here, you didn't get far enough to hurt yourself :)

By now Grall has completed his circuit without result.

I have Khalid on the roof over the mess and the rest of you still in the room, unless anyone went with Grall.

Nuveril picks herself up and brushes herself off before heading back toward Khalid. "Bah!" she says. "There could still be something in the ruins of the tower, but whatever it is doesn't leave tracks. We should go in from the bottom and look up, see what we can see. If we find nothing..." She shakes her head uncomfortably. "It could be the witch's evil spirit coming back for the rest of us; the accursed thing never left tracks." referring, of course, to Sabeen's dancing lights spell :) Climb back to the ground 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14

Waiting for you guys to decide a course of action before I update.

Female Halfling Barbarian (superstitious) 7 | hp 72/72 (86/86 raging)

Nuveril wants to go in and inspect the interior of the tower from the bottom; she'll likely do so even if no one else goes with her, although someone with a better Perception might have a better chance of spotting anything that might be there. (Can I use the 17 Perception check she rolled above and didn't get to use?) If we find nothing, she will adopt Khalid's plan of staking out the mess overnight and seeing if whatever-it-is comes back.

Led by Nuveril, you regroup inside and head through your room and the mold encrusted door to the base of the ruined tower.

Grouping near the base of the pile so you have a sufficient angle you peer up into the shaft. Almost right away several of you spot strands of webbing, glistening from the thin trickle of light which suffuses down the shaft from the open air above. The lowest is about fifteen feet up the shaft.

You continue to look, trying to distinguish shapes in the mass of beams and other remnants of the structure. Khalid sees it first, about a half second ahead of Nuveril, Grall and Arjun, a large round black shape nestled up against the wall about twenty five feet up the shaft.

We will take actions in initiative order. No surprise round. Its aware of you and it was trying to hide rather than ambush you.

In profile, it looks like this with the x representing the pile of masonry and rubble at the ground level and ? the black shape. Have a look at the monastery map for the room layout. I'll have a battle map up tonight.

Linah is up.

Edit: In other news, Khalid continues to spend a campaign full of twenties on perception rolls and Sajan still hasn't had a double figure initiative roll.

Human Cleric 7 | hp 36/51 | channel 6/7

Linah jumps back as the web hits the ground beside Khalid's feet. As she begins to speak she can see Nuveril (she's next in the initiative order and i'm just guessing that she will climb up and attack) sprint towards the tower. The cleric quickly reaches out to the halfling woman and prays for Sarenrae to guide her.

Quick meta-gaming question: Originally i was going to cast Protection from evil until i wrote it down and realised that the spider is probably not evil. Is it safe to assume that Linah would think that as well, or is it my "player knowledge" that came to that conclusion?

If you feel that Linah has no reason to think that the spider is not evil i will cast Protection from evil on Nuveril. Otherwise i will cast Guidance on her instead.

Male HP(104/104 or 125*/125*) Gnoll Barbarian 7 - Invulnerable Rager

In character, your experience with normal spiders would lead you to believe that in general they are not evil. In this case you might be wrong, who knows, I would think that meta-gaming would be more along the lines that you cast protection from evil because you knew the spider you saw was not of the "normal" variety but didn't know that in character. Its up to you to know when the walk the line between what your character should know and probably doesn't.

Female Halfling Barbarian (superstitious) 7 | hp 72/72 (86/86 raging)

By my reading of the relative heights of the rubble (10 ft.) and the spider (25 ft.), it sounds like Nuveril wouldn't be able to reach the spider to attack in melee by climbing up the rubble. If that's the case, she'll open with a ranged attack.

Nuveril draws a javelin and flings it up the shaft of the tower. Attack 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 Damage 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Sounds like dim light, so here's a miss chance, even though I'm sure it missed anyway. 1d100 ⇒ 52

This pretty much. I think even without any knowledge ranks at all every day residents of Golarian would know that some animals and vermin grow to monstrous size (but are still just animals and vermin and thus not evil) and then some spiders and spiderlike creatures are evil creatures or extra planar in origin. TBH I think its more likely that you'd think the first by default unless you had information to suggest the later, but its really an issue for you to judge based on Linah's attributes and what you perceive of her education and experiences to this point.

In the simplest terms though I don't think its unreasonable that Linah would hold off casting protection from evil until she had some sign that the creature was actually evil in the same way that I don't think a paladin would go around smiting everything within reach in the hope that the thing will turn out to be evil. There are times at which player's meta knowledge creates problems when they act a certain way but believe me I'll let you know when I have an issue and this is a very long way from that.

Attack 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
Damage 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Going to proceed with the guidance from Linah.

Linah steps behind Nuveril and places a blessing of guidance on her.

Nuveril's throw is a miss, the point of the javelin embedding itself in a protruding timber just to the side of the black shape.Guidance expended I assume.

Arjun's bomb is on target. The creature shrieks as icicles pierce its skin but does not appear to be slowed.

Fort save 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

Grall is up.

I thought about the light level and concluded you have just enough from the outside to have normal light conditions. I'm hoping it was obvious from my description but I'll be explicit that the creature currently has partial cover +2AC.

Grall will move into the rubble a little so he can get a clear shot at the creature also drawing a Javelin, then start raging and hurl it at the monster!

atk javelin enraged pwr atk 1d20 + 5 - 1 ⇒ (11) + 5 - 1 = 15 dam 1d6 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 2 = 8

Grall moves through the edge of the rubble and his throw seems to be a very near miss, the javelin deflecting off a piece of masonry just below the creature and falling to the ground.

Khalid's firebolt goes wide although it illuminates the length of the shaft and burns out a 6 inch wide gap in what seems like a mess of webs running across the tower. This in turn sets fire to several other sections of the web. The fire illuminates a great black spider with a red hourglass mark splashed across a grossly fat abdomen. The spider is large size although it looks like it has normal reach.

Going to take Sajan's turn, Alex posted last week about having a difficult time at uni and hasn't posted in a few days. Besides I'm 99% sure he would fire at the thing with his crossbow so will do that.

Sajan moves into firing position, pulling his crossbow off his back and triggering a shot at the spider. The bolt flies fairly close but the spider arches back and it misses.

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
1d8 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12 hit

Its basically ten feet above Grall's square, extending onto the four squares of the base of the tower. Let us say anyone medium sized that is adjacent to or below it can strike up at it. Nuveril would need to be below it, next to Grall.
