Combining Unarmed with Weapons

Rules Questions

My apologies if this has been gone over before - I couldn't find a reference to it by searching the forums!

Is it possible to combined unarmed strikes with weapon strikes? Setting the Monk's flurry situations aside, assuming just a character with Improved Unarmed Strike who wants, for whatever reason, to combine weapon strikes with punches in the same full attack action.

How would he go about doing this? Would the TWF rules work for it?

TWF would only be required if they are attempting to get ADDITIONAL attacks in the round, over and above his normal amount.

You can ALWAYS substitute an unarmed strike for a weapon strike as long as you preserve your iterative attacks. Unarmed attacks can be done with fists, forarms, kicks, heabutts, etc. so in some fashion you always have an unarmed strike available.

So if your character gets three attacks in a round (+15/+10/+5) and say swings a sword on a first attack (+15) and then does a shoulder block into the guy with his second (+10) and a kick to the guy next to that with his third (+5), those are perfectly legal to do and require no additional feats.

In fact he could even do it without IUS but the shoulder block and kick would give the opponents attacks of opportunity.

Two Weapon Fighting makes it more complex, but is definately NOT required to mix unarmed strikes with weapon attacks.

Note NATURAL attacks have distinct issues associated with them that make them different in many ways from UNARMED attacks. I am speaking only to Unarmed.

CAN non-Monks perform kicks, headbutts, etc.? I know the Monk's IUS entry is explicit, but the feat entry makes no mention of headbutts, nor does the unarmed strike entry in the weapons section.

Absolutely. Unarmed Combat is all that. Not just windmilling with your fists. I have not seen any entries that said 'when you swing your fists'. They all referance 'unarmed combat'.

Of course the MONKS do much better dice of damage with their headbutts, kicks, etc. But it in no way means that the are the only ones who can do it.

While the monk may be executing spinning round kicks, and nerve plexus hand knife strikes, there is nothing stopping someone from executing a basic kick to the jimmies or an old fashioned headbutt to the face if their life depends on it.
