OGL Implications and Repercussions

3.5/d20/OGL

As a relative late-comer to the transition of WOTC and Paizo taking the rudder of the legacy of 3/3.5e it's really interesting to me to hear people's views on the value of leftover 3.5 edition material, and I've got a question I'd like to pose.

Given that many people feel that much of the 3.5 material is either overpowered or only vaguely backward compatible, how likely is it that we'll see a rehabilitation of that material from the fan base?

As for 3.5 material keep in mind one of the problems which you mentioned was power creep. Much of the later 3.5 stuff was way better than the base stuff in the Players handbook for example. In paizo all the classes got a boost and is more in line with the other 3.5 stuff. Taking less work to make it work with pathfinder than it did the 3.5 core.

How likely I think it very likely. Some sites are already doing it with revisions. Including a forum here on paizo. Also some of the 3pp are already updating some of their old stuff to Pathfinder and I am sure more will follow suit. I also wouldn't be surprised to see some smaller 3pp take some of the old 3.5 stuff retool it to pathfinder and tweak it to give their own spin. Especially products from some of the old big 3pp companies that have moved onto their own stuff. Namely Green Ronin, Mongoose etc.

Actually I am surprised it hasn't happened more, since a lot of that stuff was popular.

I imagine some publishers may also be mining 3.5 OGC and using it new contexts. I've done this with parts of a few of my PDFs. For example, Fencing & Firearms takes OGC I wrote for FFG's Sorcery & Steam and updates it for PF.

I, for one, would love to see more community projects and repositories of OGL stuff converted for Pathfinder, similar to Nethys' site and the D20PFSRD site. I think a wiki with a large enough user base could whip the Magic Item and Spell Compendiums into shape in short order. Monster Manuals would be a bit more labor intensive...I guess the first thing to do would be to compile a list of everything WOTC published under OGL. Does such a list exist already?

It does, it's called the SRD. You can still find it various places on the internet. 95% of all the stuff Wizards (and Paizo when they were licensed to do Dungeon and Dragon) was closed content.

The real thing to do is start combing through all the d20 sourcebooks from 3rd parties for open content.

Actually, no. d20srd.org indeed goes beyond OGC in certain way. For example, they include errata to the SRD material which Wizard have never designated as OGC.

Perhaps I wasn't clear, and I apologize if that's the case. Is there a list of specific books published by WOTC that fall at least partly under the OGL?

Okay... WOTC published most of the following on OGL

Players Handbook (One only), DMG, and Monster Manual, the Expanded Psionics Handbook, and material from Unearthed Arcana and the Epic Handbook not the entirety of most of the above with proper names removed and genericised.

If you don't see it on the SRD it's closed content and can not be touched.

MM2 had exactly two beasties that were OGC as well.

Yeah, one of which was lifted directly out of Sword & Sorcery Studio's "Creature Collection"...
