Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Ultimate Magic better have lots of new IMPROVED Familiars. If I just see stats for some loser ferret or crab I'm going to flip my lid.

I'd also love to see more feats in the Familiar chain. Greater Familiar, anyone?

Anyone have any familiars they'd like to see? Here are some of mine:

Various kinds of fey (Nixie, Pixie, Tlixie)
Lantern Archon
Various kinds of constructs
Undead Familiars
Ghost Familiars
Oozes
Abberrations (perhaps a few that are symbiotic in nature)

How about steamworks/marrionettes?

I'd love to see some sort of plant familiars, like vegipigmies or shambling mounds. I'd also love to see some medium/large familiars for the more combat oriented wizards/sorcerers (like those that go the Gish route and have decent BABs)- wolves, tigers, blink dogs, even skeletons.

Evil Pseudodragons
Faerie dragons

I know in 3.5 there were a lot of feats which allows such familiars, but unfortunatly these are not at OGL, so check the books yourself. ;)

Various kinds of fey (Nixie, Pixie, Tlixie) -> never seen
Lantern Archon -> Book of Exalted deeds
Various kinds of constructs -> not sure, but can't you use the "clockwork" creatures as familiars (Monster Manual V, i think)
Undead Familiars -> Libris Mortis
Ghost Familiars -> Maybe Ghostwalk
Oozes -> never seen...
Abberrations (perhaps a few that are symbiotic in nature) -> Maybe Lords of Madness

Squirrels, Skunks, and Beavers ... for familiars and druid companions.

How about also giving us some options as to what kind of bonus we get with our familiar?

For example, if you pick a cat your only option is a bonus to Move Silently checks. How about giving a choice between that or a bonus to initiative, and/or a bonus against falling damage?

This would give a PC the ability to get the familiar they want with less chance of having to accept a bonus that doesn't fit their character.

Scarab Sages

I agree with firest

also I would love to see a Honey Badger for a familiar or animal companion - check them out on youtube if you dont know what one is

How about limbs - like Thing from the Adam's Family?

I once played a wizard with Crawling Claw familiar. It was a blast.

Holy shi-! Honey badger FTW! XD I hope those are in the Bestiary 2.

I demand a faerie dragon familiar. :D

I would like to see (in different product, obviously) a whole bunch of alternative pseudodragons, with different abilities. There was one article in Dragon, but I was not satisfied with variety of pseudodragons presented there.

I would like there to be an unseen servant familiar.

+1

Very much this! But buyer beware, I think I've seen more spell-casters die due to careless use of this spell than any other.

You could have twin homonculi familiar - good angelic familiar on your right shoulder and bad demonic familiar on your left shoulder.
You'd have to treat them, game wise, as one familiar but in two bodies.
I'm not sure how legal or potentially problematic that would be, but it oughta be doable.

Sounds like I need to update my Unfamiliar Familiars article I wrote for Kobold Quarterly #9. I covered a few of the ideas mentioned upthread such as blink dog pups, arcane servant (based on unseen servant), and a symbiotic familiar, in addition to a handful of other critters.

Lantern Lodge

In the realm of mundane familiars, my wife would like to see:

Hedgehogs
Bush babies and other assorted lemurs
Woodchuck/groundhog or other large non-rat rodent
Chameleon/gecko
Flying squirrel/sugar glider

Things I'd like to see:
Pig
Goat
Fennec Fox or other tiny canine
Big vermin (like luna moths, Goliath beetles, giant wasp, etc)

Of course for many of these we simply use the existing familiar stat-blocks and perhaps house rule in an ability or two at the expense of another (Lemurs and flying squirrels gain darkvision, Fennec fox gains blindsight, etc). But if I had an all inclusive wish list, I'd add the creatures mentioned above

Dark Archive

I once had an idea for an aberration familiar called an Eye Spider, but it involved the arcanist loosing one of his own eyes to make full use of it.

AKA 8one6

squirrels have been mentioned twice, and they are just awesome

also I'd like to see tiny monkeys and big apes and everything in between ^^

also perhaps a donkey would be awesome (altough that's perhaps a little big for a familiar, even I have to admit that)

Parrots!

Speaks one language, a bonus to bluff/diplomacy/disguise/perform/something parrot-y.

Also goat and piggy but you've heard that one before...

I'd definitely like to see a tiny fey, in line with the imp and quasit, but probably with a chaotic good alignment.

In a homebrew world featuring a very decadent nation that has bred a variety of small companion dogs, I offer a tiny dog as a familiar option. Stat-wise, it's just a regular dog with the "young creature" template. Man's best friend grants its master a +3 bonus to Diplomacy.

Dark Archive

A gremlin of some sort as well as some lesser protean creature.

Faerie Dragon already exists as a familiar. Check the bonus bestiary. It's free.

Also...I'm 100% sure the Bestiary 2 will be bringing more familiar and improved familiar options to the table. Perhaps even Ultimate Magic will provide some rules to wiggles the current guidelines in the familiar choice, such as critters larger than Tiny.

Liberty's Edge

What I want is a blink dog. Those are so cool.

How so? I am curious......

This is in regard to Carbondmetrics unseen servants causing death post...

Dark Archive

Improved Familiars, similar to the Imp and Quasit, for Daemons (vaguely insectile Daemon Hounds?), Formians, Deva, Archons, Azata, Proteans, Axiomites, etc. (I've written up versions of everything but the Azata, but would love to see what other ideas are out there.)

A few undead familiar options, a few fey options, a few genie-related critters (similar to the Gens of the Sha'ir, perhaps), at least one positive energy based critter (to balance out those undead) and at least one critter from the plane of shadow (perhaps more illusory than solid). Some sort of aberrant starspawn critter, for those Old Cults wizards. Some psionic-ish critters, perhaps inspired by the works of Alan Dean Foster.

And more normal animals, with varying levels of 'normal.'

Vultures, magpies, chameleons, foxes, weensy gazelles , Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs, housecat-sized Calistrian wasps, Mazmezzian 'giant' spiders (about the size of a basketball), Serpentfolk spawned half-cat / half cobras, miniature giant space hamsters, shoulder-squatting pacific northwestern tree octopi ...

Tiny dragons. None of this pseudo-dragon crap. A real flying lizard that spits a gob of fiery phlegm at you, with the effects of a dose of alchemist's fire (only X times per day. It doesn't have an infinite supply of magically-generated combustible phlegm, after all!).

To balance out those Calistrian wasps, perhaps some familiars inspired by other dieties. Desnan 'starflies,' that can look like larger-than-normal butterflies, or convert into star-like motes of tlight and dance around. A Nethyn 'magic elemental' that functions kinda like a Living Spell, but has to be 'charged up' with a 1st level spell by it's owner, and can inflict the effects of that spell by touch for the rest of the day (yeah, obviously I lost by sense of balance there...). From Sarenrae, a fiery fey-sized angel of healing, appearing with a tiny torch in one hand and a tiny gleaming brass scimitar in the other, who, somewhat unexpectedly, cuts away wounds with her scimitar (which heals the living instead of harms, as it's made of positive energy, not brass) and smacks with her fiery torch to do damage.

Who knows what sort of familiar a wizard devoted to the ways of Norgorber or Iomedae might call up!

Aren't faerie dragons already in the bonus bestiary pdf?

*looks it up*

Yeah, they are. And there's even a paragraph about them being familiars. =3

Liberty's Edge

Aside from variations and expansions to Improved Familiar I'd love to see additional familiar centric spells, equipment, feats.

Off the top of my head Lassie's Transformation, Collar of Reunion, and Distracting Attack.

Additional familiar bonus choices as mentioned above, and a feat that would allow you to take additional familiar bonuses.

Was one of those familiars a skunk?

<crosses fingers>

A swan! It would be a Small familiar, but I long for it! Also as an animal companion...

Holy crap! The Honey Badger must be CR10! Also, it has tattoos under its fur and drinks - no, bleeds - hard liquor.
