Going to be away from the computer for a few hours. Assume Freya is being generally unpleasant. She's out of first level spells but can use daze and/or fire her crossbow; punching dagger in melee, if absolutely unavoidable. If it's more undead, there's not a thing she can do but hope someone else can take them down. :)

I feel Freya's pain. If an opportunity allows, Rauno will have to scribe some scrolls for both arcanists to help them better contribute to running battles like this.

Believe me, I sympathize - I'm not at all a big fan of this "sewer phase", and I'll be looking for a chance to pull the party out of the sewers prior to when the AP suggests it should be done.

Well, don't count us out yet. We still have bolts, TK fists and cantrips to contribute. Different classes get different chances to shine in most adventures, and this is really Tao and Sarien's opportunity. :)

Sorry for the delay, today, everybody - big update to put together. It should be up within the hour.

Male Human Traveler / 8

That was an impressively long couple of posts. Well done! Quite an assemblage before us.

Seriously. This group makes the Serpent's Skull NPC group look tiny by comparison.

You know, I was just thinking that!

Time to start getting them killed off, then, right? Fewer names to remember. ;)

DM:
I've been thinking about Freya's patron, but I'm not that familiar with Golarion's extraplanar relations and I keep thinking I'll find the time to dig up some information on them. (Hasn't happened yet. :P) I know the devils and demons had that whole Blood War thing going back in the 3.5 setting; I assume they're similarly opposed in Golarion's multiverse, which would make a demonic patron appropriate -- someone willing to empower a mortal to be a thorn in Asmodeus' allies' side. But especially with a priest of Iomedae in the party, I don't want her to get pushed too evil, as it's likely to lead to intraparty conflict. Her general attitude and desire for revenge line up well with Calistria (a deity she probably has not even heard of), so maybe one of her planar allies? She would definitely be pushed toward vengeance and holding a grudge (not that she needs much prompting -- that's why she was chosen in the first place) but less toward chaotic evil ends which might lead to conflict with Hardin.

Male Human Traveler / 8

Yay! A level already!

I'm just taking another level in Rogue. Are we rolling for hit points here?

Freya:
I think that's a GREAT idea. The way I interpret the patron relationship, I don't know that any alignment issues would really arise - the demonic patron would be well aware that it was using a non-evil mortal, and probably even chose you on purpose AS a non-evil mortal simply because your attitudes would most closely suit it's goals. It probably won't require you to do much that you wouldn't do already, because it won't need you to. If there's a conflict of interest, though, we can hash it out.

For HP rolls for 2nd level, please roll here. I have a house rule where you can take your roll or have me roll for you, but if I roll, you have to take my result, even if it's the same or worse.

Here is what I was looking at for Rauno's second level. Let me know what you think.

Spoiler:

Rauno will take second level as a Ranger. This is harkening back to his upbringing as a member of a wandering caravan as a youth as well as his years spent lurking and observing around Westcrown.

Changes:
Hit Points: Add 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Proficiencies: Add all simple and martial weapons, light and medium armor and shields (not tower).
BAB: +1
Fort: +2
Refl: +2
Class Ability: Favored Enemy (Humanoid, Human). +2 to hit/damage, Bluff, Knowledge, Perception, Sense Motive, Survival.
Class Ability: Track. Add 1 to survival checks to follow or ID tracks.
Class Ability: Wild Empathy. Improve attitude of animal.
Skill Points (11, including favored class).
+1 Bluff.
+1 Knowledge Arcana.
+1 Knowledge Dungeoneering.
+1 Knowledge Engineering.
+1 Knowledge History.
+1 Knowledge Local.
+1 Perception.
+1 Sense Motive.
+1 Spellcraft.
+1 Stealth.
+1 Survival.

Edit: I think I will take you up on the house hit point roll rule... Thanks!

Male

Based on his actions, would you consider Hardin to be more Neutral Good or Lawful Good?

Joanna:
No reaction to the name "Frogs in the Reliquary"? *grin*

Rauno: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

AdAstra: It's really hard to say, based on the limited sample size. My initial reaction is to say he's playing things rather NG, but then again, the law/authority in Cheliax (and Westcrown in particular) is so corrupt as to make it very difficult for a LG character to really let the "L" shine. I don't know that he's had much of an opportunity to let the Lawful flag fly, so to speak. I can see a case being made for either alignment, without too much difficulty. Kind of a wishy washy answer, but that's my story, and I'm stickin' to it. :-)

Male Half-Orc Barbarian 1 - Inquisitor 1

2nd Level:
Orgininally I was thinking Cleric of Erastil but based on how he's played out I think that Inquisitor makes more sense.

HP:1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

skill:
+1 perception
+1 sense motive
+1 knowledge(arcana)
+1 knowledge(dungeoneering)
+1 knowledge(planes)
+1 knowledge(religion)

Saves: Fort+2 Will+2

Domain: Growth (4/day)

Judgement 1/day

Monster Lore: +1 to monster knowledge checks

Spells:
level-0:stabalize, create water, detect magic, read magic
level-1(2/day)cure light wounds, prot/evil

Stern gaze: +1 to intimidate & sense motive

obviously, I'll keep my roll for HP...

Male

I plan on taking a level in fighter to reflect Hardin's adolescence (growing up in a noble family).

The bonus feat will be Dodge. I'll be adding Heavy armor proficiency and all Martial Weapons (Woo-hoo! Flails!)

Skill ranks will be in:

+1 Swim (just to get the adjusted skill back up to 0...)
+1 Intimidate
+1 Knowledge (Nobility)
+1 Perception

+2 Fort, +0 Will, +0 Ref

1d10 + 0 ⇒ (1) + 0 = 1

I'd like your re-roll option. I don't think you can get any worse than that. :)

Hardin: 1d10 ⇒ 5

Male Human Rogue (Investigator)/ 1

Level 2 Updates:

Spoiler:

Sticking with another level of Rogue since that's what he does.

HP increase: 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 + 1 = 6
Including the +1 for Con and +1 for Favored Class the new total is 16.

BAB increases to 1

Base Reflex increases to 3

Adds Evasion and Rogue Talent: Fast Stealth (moves at full speed while using stealth without penalty).

+ 1 rank to each of the previously ranked skills:
Acrobatics
Bluff
Climb
Disable Device
Escape Artist
Knowledge Local
Perception
Sense Motive
Sleight of Hand
Stealth
Use Magic Device

DM:
If Freya ever needs to get nudges from her patron, you can spoiler them for me. Like I said, she's ignorant of where her powers have come from and doesn't really care at this point. If she decides later on that she wants to know exactly what she's gotten into, we can dig into it then.

AdAstra:
I was away from the thread for a while, and when I caught up, we had already been shown to our rooms. You can assume Freya shot you a quick glare through narrowed eyes, then deliberately turned away. She's not going to get into it in public. Assuming we have some downtime with just the PCs coming up, we can deal with it then. She kind of thought you might be onto her with the "disproportionate response" line.

Level 2:
Taking a second level of witch. Hit point roll: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2. Putting her favored-class bonus into hit points as well.

For her second hex, she's taking Evil Eye. Skill points in Acrobatics, Escape Artist, Intimidate, Knowledge (local), Perception & Stealth.

Hit me with a HP roll, DM. Like Hardin, I can't do any worse.

Joana: 1d6 ⇒ 4

Male Human Traveler / 8

DM:

I love that Yakopulio particularly took a shine to Sarien. She was the one he was impressed with the most as well during the introductions and I almost wrote up some comments agreeing with her about the absence of the Gods before I decided that it'd make my post too long and disjointed.

Awesome.

Everybody looks great for second level. Update coming up in a bit, here.

Male Human Traveler / 8

Bad news. My office blocked Paizo this afternoon, which means that posting will be a lot harder than it used to be.

I can always go to the library at lunch most days to get access, but that's only once a day. DM J, if that's too seldom for you, I understand. I was really hoping they wouldn't go all draconian, but alas...

I'm seriously contemplating buying a smartphone or something along those lines that would give me online access from anywhere, but that won't happen immediately and it's a less than ideal solution. So anyway, I'd be happy to keep playing to the best of my ability by posting at noon to 1pm EST but if you'd rather pull in another alternate to replace me, I'll understand.

Eh, let's see what happens. If it's really a problem I'll pull someone in, but it may not be. We'll monitor the situation, please post when you can, even if it's after work.

Male Human Traveler / 8

Will do! Thanks for being willing to give it a shot. I've been enjoying the game thoroughly so far and would hate to have to give it up.

I'm going to do the best I can, today, gang - but I'm on day two of nicotine withdrawal, so I'm going slightly insane today. That's also why I didn't get a map up last night.

Stay with me through this, and we'll all be much better off, I promise :-)

Thanks for your understanding.

J

Male Human Traveler / 8

Well today I actually had access to Paizo at work. So maybe they didn't block it. We'll see what happens tomorrow.

You know, I actually thought when she was casting that, "Watch the horse roll a natural 20." Stupid horse. Should have been a good tactic.

It was hilarious the way it turned out. Hilarious.

AdAstra:
In the future, would it be possible for you to just describe what Hardin's doing, rather than describing what he's doing and also the result of what the roll is? For example, saying that you hit or miss your opponent and describing what the hit or miss entails might fall into conflict with information that I have that you don't in a certain circumstance, and I'd hate to see a situation arise where I have to contradict what you've already written. So, if you want to be descriptive about exactly how you're attacking something, that's fine, just leave the resolution of the attack to me, if that's OK.

Many thanks! J

P.S. Obviously, if you roll 1's or 2's at low levels, you miss - but that's not what I'm talking about here.

DM J wrote:
Edit: Ninja'd by Freya killing an armiger, so, you get 1 fame point instead of two. Although, on the bright side, none of the Armigers now knows what Freya looks like! :-)

Sorry, guys. If this is going to be a "winning hearts & minds" campaign in Westcrown, someone's going to need to keep Freya off the rope lines. She's not very good at gladhanding and kissing babies. On the plus side, she wasn't wearing her green cloak so you might be able to persuade people she's just a lone nutcase and not actually an official part of the group!

Personally, I love Freya just the way she is.

But yeah, keeping her off the rope lines might not be a terrible idea, because this is in many ways a "winning hearts and minds in Westcrown" campaign, at least in part(s). There is plenty of the AP that doesn't revolve around this, but there are many aspects of it that do.

It's possible, too, that over the course of a 6 part AP, we might get to see Freya won over, herself - not that I'm counting on it.

DM J wrote:
That WAS a sensible offer...coupled with a sort of bad roll ;-) We'll assume he was displeased with Hardin's tone of voice.

He probably didn't like the assumption that he needed protection, a big, famous man like him in front of a starstruck groupie. Self-promoters aren't known for being sensible. :)

Jo, hope this scene isn't too awkward for you - if it is, thank Sean Reynolds, not me! LOL

At any rate, it is nearing it's conclusion.

Yeah, I feel kind of bad about the "'tweenst the thighs" comment as well. Normally not at all my style of rp but it just seemed too appropriate for Sarien to pass that up.

The game thread is getting a bit ... edgy. And we're not even at the part written by Richard Pett, yet! :)

Male Human Traveler / 8

I'll be sure not to have Sarien go down that avenue again. There's just something about Freya that gets his dander up.

Rauno as well. Perhaps it is just the Foofy nickname, but I suspect it is more... :)

Dark Archive

Male Human Cleric 1 | Fighter 1

I do admit that Hardin is...sorely tempted to smack someone around. He's just not quite sure who, yet. He also figures that she'd object to him intervening.

So, he figures that stabilizing someone after Freya's prickly charms prove more literally prickly than charming is the safer bet...

DM J wrote:
The streets between Jacovo's and the Abandoned Temple are largely unlit. How is each group providing Light?

We'll let Tao carry the haloran, as he's biggest and strongest and can hit someone with it if they attack us. :)

Just had to say: DM J, I think you are doing an excellent job with the story telling and pacing on this thread. Thanks again for jumping in and DMing this story for us!

Thanks, MoB - I appreciate the kind words. It's been a bit tougher to keep up with than I originally anticipated, but as long as you all are having fun, then I'm doing my job.

Right now, I'm having a new garage built, replacing my gas line (which broke), living for a week at my in-laws, and hitting my busy part of the month at work. So, I've been really stressed and haven't had the time to devote to the game that I'd like. I assure you, it will pick back up to speed in just a few days. Thanks to everyone for their patience.

Male Human Traveler / 8

I'm happy to wait for things to settle down for you. We all have our busy times, and as MoB says, you've done a great job setting the scene and the atmosphere for this game. It's no problem.

And living with the in-laws? You have my sympathy. :)

It's actually moving at a very reasonable pace for a play-by-post; it's just that those of us in AK's or Navior's Serpent's Skull games have gotten spoiled. ;)

DM J, as long as we're dealing with the "Liberators," could you put a link to the post where they're all introduced in your profile so we can get back to it quickly rather than going through page by page? There's too many of them for me to remember who they all are when a name is mentioned.

That's a great idea, Joana - I'll have that done within a few moments.

That's the sort of thing that a first-time PbP DM needs nudged on, so thank you.

Lurker here. I think you should seriously smack Freya around. Boy does she define the true meaning of the word bi... I mean witch. ;)

@Wander: Ah, the lucky one. Another pbp with Joana. How are you so fortunate? It's a good thing your characters get along so well with hers, or this could get ugly. ;)

Male Humanly Awesome 'n Totally Rockin' Paladin of Greatness

Dear Freya, I fear Tao is too shy for your subtle flirting. Perhaps if you are more direct he might be more responsive. He might even let you hold his... sword.

LOL!
Touche', Freya! :)

Okay, I'll stop intruding. I couldn't pass this one up. It's was just too good!

No need to worry about intruding. It's nice to know that we can entertain an audience!

Indeed, lurkers are always welcome.

FYI, gang, I'm posting from home today - where you might think that would make me available more often, actually, it's the opposite, as I'm backfilling the trench that was dug to replace my gas line.

So, I'll update as often as possible today, and should be back to full speed/strength by Monday.

Just wanted to keep you all advised.

I'm glad you're enjoying the storytelling; so am I! I don't think you need to worry about posting, especially since you are doing it here in the OOC thread. Following PbPs like this is what got me started in them. Reading along with the guys over in Aubrey's ROTRL thread is actually what convinced me that PbPs were a worthwhile investment.
