Is RPTools (MapTool) Safe?

I am always leery of freeware, JavaScript, and programs that allow direct computer-to-computer connections...

I really like what this software has to offer, as it looks like something that would be perfect for my online RotRL game...

I have seen many on these boards talk about their use of it. So I was wondering if anybody here can alleviate my fears of using it?

Far as I can tell, it is perfectly safe. I have yet to hear of anyone being hacked via it, and it doesn't include any spyware, adware or viruses. I've never actually used it myself, you should understand, but given its popularity, the lack of viruses and spyware and the fact that I have never seen any mention of people being hacked through it I would say that it is perfectly safe.

Remember, some people create freeware just because they like creating software and like to share what they created ;).

Players use it quite a bit over at Tangled Web and I’ve yet to read any horror stories about it.

Sure, it works great. It's clearly a labour of love for the contributors.

I'm sure the software is indeed a labor of love and works great. My fear is that some outside schmuck has written code (like was done with PDF files) and messed it up for the rest of us...

That said, I have not read nor been able to find any such instance (like Chris Parker above stated)...

So, I'll probably give it a try...

Im always leery of freeware to the point of paranoia. Im probably the only healer in my WoW guild that doesnt use any external mods for heals. :)

That said, my tabletop crew is going to be using Maptools, as our face to face game has had alot of scheduling issues this past year. Ive been messing with it for about a month now with no ill effects.
