Computer Printer Discussion

Having recently moved to New Zealand, I found myself having to re-buy a lot of the things we left behind in Thailand, an inkjet printer among them. I picked up an Epson TX110 on sale and have installed a CISS system (ink reservoir) to avoid paying ridiculous sums for printer ink. It's not without its drawbacks, but I figure I've saved a couple hundred $NZ over the past few months. I print a lot of worksheets and so on for my ESL students, and I've been printing out chapters and sections of various RPG resources as well.

The TX110 is a typical "razor & blades" inkjet/scanner, sold cheaply to push ink on the consumer. Print quality is *meh* but it's done its job. Getting it to work with the CISS has been a little frustrating, and I leave the scanner bed in the up position to allow the ink tubes to move freely.

I figure this community uses a lot of ink/toner in pursuit of our hobby, so I wonder what printer(s) you use. Any gems out there? Any models to avoid? Does anyone else use a CISS?

Brands vary but I like HP.

If your doing lots of colour printing get a printer that has individual colour cartages.

Saves money since you only replace yellow, say, rather than the everything when only one tone is low.

While not my printer, its what I use. My parents have a Brother printer and I convinced them to get a CISS because they kept going through ink so fast (my mom prints around 500 pages a week minimum for work, when she's home). Its invaluable. In the 6 months or so that they've had it I've already had to pick up a refill kit and are completely out of black for that already, but I absolutely love it.

I avoid Epsom after having a couple of inkjets die on me due to blocked heads. Currently I'm using a Canon printer/scanner combo without many issues. I don't use it for printing enough to warrant setting up CISS for it. It's pretty good for printing odd stuff. I've run fabric printer sheets through it, which the other printers in the house can't handle.

I got warned by a sales tech that Brother printers purge the tubes between the ink reservoir and the print head whenever they do a cleaning cycle and that they waste a lot of ink doing it. My parent's Brother certainly seems to be evidence in favor of that warning judging by the way it swills ink for small amounts of printing.
