K, here goes...
New iPod shuffle
New iPod nano
Meh. The shuffle never really interested me, and the nano was better, IMHO, before.
New iPod touch
Nice upgrade, but would like a still photo camera, before I want a video camera. (I know, video cameras can be thinner and don't need to be as good...)
New Apple TV (my favorite end-of-year item)
Interesting, but from what I've heard, tv rentals won't be coming to the old machine. I have two. (Yes, I'm one of those who Jobs quotes as saying "those who like it, love it.") I like the idea of streaming, but I'm not ditching the ones I have for this.
New iTunes interface
Not worth the major number upgrade. Not enough "new" at least for me.
In my opinion, this was the least interesting "event" that I've seen in a long time.

The Nano with the touch screen is interesting. I'm looking forward to the teardown reports of what's inside the thing. Personally this model is ho-hum much like a 1st Gen iPod Touch was, there needs to be a bit more to it.
For the price range its in I'd expect it to do a bit more in terms of connectivity with other devices. Stick a bluetooth chipset in there and some minor App functions, you could turn that into a track-pad control for the Apple TV or even Bluetooth multi-user input into an iPad/iPod Touch attached to a TV using VGA out.
Unfortunately I think like the buttonless shuffle it is going to flop. The Nano is the step up from the shuffle with a screen for more complex music selection and playlist creation on the player. Anymore functionally and one may as well spend the extra 80 USD and move up into an iPod Touch (where you can actually do stuff), or save 100 USD and get a shuffle.
I'll tell-ya, I was very tempted to sell off my iPod 3rd Gen to help pay for this new iPod 4 Gen. Camera (even if lower res) front and back, accel and gyro, A4 chip, even thiner and lighter... must resist until iPad 2nd Gen...

From what I understand, the nano is NOT running iOS. It's only made to look like it. So, no apps, no games, just the feature set that is on it.
My thoughts are that Apple is really trying to differentiate their devices now. If you want apps, movies, they want you to buy the touch. If you want just music but some control, buy the nano. If you don't care about control, and don't want to spend a lot, get the shuffle.
They are trying to corral their users into specific models. Their choice. It may backfire. But I think there is a captive audience. By some accounts, up to 38% of all iOS devices sold have been iPod touches, yet to date there is no competitor. The iPhone has competitors, and the iPad-like devices are starting to come out of the woodwork, but there does not seem to be a serious challenger to the iPod Touch. So why wouldn't you try and get even more of your customers to buy it. It's not like they have anywhere else to go.
