What's the demonym for someone from Minkai?

Ummm... huh?

Sorry! A demonym is a word used to describe a person when you are talking about the place they're from.

The demonym for someone from Australia is 'Australian'. The demonym for someone from Melbourne is 'Melburnian' but for someone from Sydney is 'Sydneysider'.

I was wondering what the word for someone from Minkai is. The demonym for someone from Tian Xia appears to be 'Tian', but I was looking for the next layer down.

what's the general "vibe" that the catfolk have? Are they house-catty or big-catty? Both? Since they appear to sorta kinda be intended to be a playable race, what kind of position do the occupy in Golarion, if they exist there at all (see above)?
Neat question. Osirion is kinda/sorta Egypt, and Egyptians were huge fans of 'people with animal heads,' so perhaps a cat-folk race could be backfitted into Osirion? (Or, yanno, used to worship Rakshasa as intermediaries to various gods, not knowing that the single god granting all of their 'different' clerics spells was a LE trickster god that the Rakshasa themselves followed...)

One problem...

Rakshasa do not worship gods, rakshasa are worshiped as gods.

But yes, I agree with the idea of some of the newer races being created as rare favored of certain gods. For example, why wouldn't Achaekek have a small number of thri-kee... I mean, "anthropomorphic praying mantis PC race" around? Better yet, if there had been an "anthropomorphic praying mantis PC race" already in the setting then why wouldn't the Red Mantis Assassins, say, bug them constantly, promote them into the secretive layers of their organization, or set up their organization on the very island that the mantis-dudes are native to?

I can see rat-folk hiding out among wererats because the standard human would never take the time to learn the difference. They'd face the same persecutions. But maybe not in Vudra.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that Catfolk would have specifically been called out in the Osirion material, having been poring over it recently... though if Osirion resembles its real-world analogue, the Pharaohs liked to import exotic people and animals as a ornament to the court. Historically, this included Pygmies, leopards, etc., but not in enough numbers for them to survive the centuries. But the policy can justify a random exotic Osirian for your campaign, I imagine.

Rats are sacred to Ganesha in India, 'tis true. The equivalent to Ganesha (in some respects) in Vudra might be Likha, but I doubt she has an elephant head.

I should have phrased that better. I meant that the Osirioni might have worshipped Rakshasa as intermediaries of 'animal-headed gods.' That was a seperate non-catgirl-related thought. :)

I'm not sure it'd be terribly unbalancing at all... it'd just be weird and off-model and strange. Like a singing dinosaur. Or a purple horse. Or a one-headded ettin.

Thanks. It's because I want to play a socially awkward Sorcerer, which necessitates dumping her Charisma, so I need to cast with something else. Sheer willpower seems to fit, so Wisdom is my first choice.

I think there is a bloodline or archetype in Ultimate Magic that allows that.

Yes. 'Empyreal' wild bloodline.

Apparently not that unbalancing, but I think it's good that it's limited.

The issue is that I think every Sorcerer should be able to Wisdom-cast. Charisma casting pretty much requires a social character, which limits backstories.

No plans at all.

We did an Asian AP because I felt like there was a huge audience for such an AP AND because I was very interested, personally, in doing that AP. Sales, so far, of Jade Regent seem to support this theory.

We're doing a pirates AP because "Pirates" was far and away the number 1 request from folks on an often-responded-to thread about "what APs do you wanna see?" Pirates beat the next closest one by like two dozen votes. Also... I like pirates a lot and want to do more with them.

Alkenstar and the Mana Wastes do have their fans... but a lot more people (me included) are uncomfortable with a strong presence of guns in their fantasy setting. As such, we're very VERY unlikely to do an AP set in the Mana Wastes. More likely (but still not that likely overall) is a module set there.

The demonym for someone from Minkai is Minkai. Not my favorite option (I would have much preferred "Minkaian," which has echos of Hawwaian)... but it more or less got settled upon in print before I had much input.

Sounds to me like you're looking more at playing something like a wizard, honestly—socially awkward fits that class like a glove. Not so much for sorcerers—that's not their design philosophy and intent at all.

3) They're high CR because we wanted a high CR non-giant humanoid or two in the game.

4) Once you start going down that route, a lot of gamers start to get nervous. Not me. You'll find many examples of monsters being romantic scattered throughout our products. Heck... the entire Legacy of Fire Adventure Path

5) Not a big chance. For two reasons. First, it's not open content—it's intellectual property that belongs to Wizards of the Coast. Second, in Pathfinder, "life" isn't an element, so it'd make no sense to have a "life elemental."

6) Ratfolk have a pretty big presence in Sekamina below Tian Xia. There are no "micefolk" in Golarion.

7) "Good luck" creatures are to a certain extent defined by superstitions in societies. In Golarion, for example, the pirates of the Shackles think that tengu absorb bad luck, and so many ships keep a tengu as a "mascot" of sorts for good luck. The majority of the "luck" themed monsters we've published so far, though, are catlike. The silvanshee agathion from Bestiary 2 is a good example.

8) The kitsune isn't in Bestiary 3 at all. It's in Dragon Empires Gazetter. Bestiary 3 DOES have stats for a plain old fox though.

Depends on the Linnorm King's preference. A lot of Linnorm Kings die because their replacement-to-be ousts them, and that usually results in the old linnorm's skull being thrown out or put into storage or whatever.

Those who die not due to revolution or treachery, though... I suspect they have their linnorm skull put on their ship with them when they're sent out to burn on their way to Valenhall.

There were indeed ice ages on Golarion... but that doesn't have much to do with where the linnorms live.

The iconic gunslinger hasn't a cowboy feeling and I am very grateful for that.
If the point was a "plenty of firearm" AP I would likely prefer something on the tune of a "John Carter of Mars"or "The three musketeers" where swords and guns join more smoothly.

9)Your top 10 best vampire movies?

10)What are your top 10 sword fantasy movies?

1) The Thin Man was actually created by James Sutter. It's got a lot of similarities to the Slender Man of internent meme fame, but those are mostly coincidental.

2) Not off the top of my head.

3) "Void" is actually an element in Minkai, and so a void elemental might make sense. That said... a void elemental, stat-wise, would end up looking VERY similar to an air elemental, so that might not be a good use of 2 pages of Bestiary content that could be put to better use on actually new (rather than variant) monsters. And yes, Wizards owns the name "life elemental," particularly in the context of what we're talking about here. Whether or not they would sue us if we used it, and whether or not such a lawsuit would even be legitimate and successful, I can't say. I'd rather not test those waters... especially for a monster that I'm not a fan of in the first place.

4) I heard that the name "tiefling" was invented by Wolfgang Baur back in his TSR days, but I'm not 100% sure on that. Not sure where the word "aasimar" came from. Both were invented for Planescape in 2nd edition AD&D if I'm not mistaken. 3rd Edition D&D presented chaos and law versions of tieflings... but I'm not a fan of that concept much at all. Since we've already got aasimar linked to all good outsiders and tieflings linked to all evil outsiders, we'd have to link a chaos race to all chaotic outsiders and a law race to all lawful outsiders. And the way the outsiders for the game are designed—there are a LOT of similarities between the good ones (agathions, azatas, angels, and archons) and a LOT of similarities between the evil ones (devils, demons, daemons). I can't say the same for Law and Chaos. A race that works equally well for archons, inevitables, and devils? or one that works equally well for azatas, proteans, and demons? I have trouble imagining what those races would look like, and that makes me much less interested to explore those races as new possibilities.

5) Yes.

6) Interesting... but hardly worth statting up unless they're treated VERY VERY different than the standard elementals. Statting up a smaller or larger one is easy on your own, just go to the size changing rules in the Appendix and go to town. I'd rather not devote multiple pages in a Bestiary to that. If we DO someday do gargantuan or colossal elementals, they'll be more than plain old elementals.

7) Aesthetic choice, fueled in part by the fact that swarms are mostly based on real-life swarms, with a significant amount of fantasy injected in order to make them behave more dangerously and thus function better as monsters. There's a LOT of stories out there about skeletonzing swarms of piranhas or army ants, or murderous swarms of killer bees or birds... but it's not something you see a lot of examples of when it comes to things like dragons. Constructs perhaps... but not in fantasy stories–mostly in sci-fi. As a result, since we tend to skew our monster selections on traditional choices and mythological sources and the like rather than just making up brand new out-of-the-blue monsters, we just tend to avoid making swarms of things other than animals and vermin and the like.

8) From Wizards of the Coast, that list is more or less limited to the DMG, Player's Handbook, the epic level book, the psionics book, Deities and Demigods, and Unearthed Arcana (and 2 monsters from Monster Manual 2, but that was sort of an errror/failure). When you spread out into 3rd party publishers... the number of books out there explodes into hundreds and hundreds. Too many to list here, that's for sure!

9) Oh man... let's see if I can list them without forgetting an obvious one. In order they come to mind (AKA no real order at all): Nosferatu, Near Dark, Let Me In, Let the Right One In, Thirst, Underworld, Dracula (1931), Shadow of the Vampire, Cronos, and Blade II.

10) Same as #9 above. The first 10 that come to mind: Conan the Barbarian, Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, Return of the King, The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, Dragonslayer, Jason and the Argonauts, Clash of the Titans (1981), The Dark Crystal... and that's about it. I'd have to dip into mediocre "sword fantasy" movies to get the last one, which would be Conan the Destroyer, I guess.

1) No. I actually quite dislike the generic classes idea. Being able to say, "This person is a wizard" and in those four words being able to convey a HUGE amount of information is actually really important to me, both as a writer/game designer and as a GM/player. Something like the "generic classes" are interesting from a fundamental "how to design game content" viewpoint, but aren't really appropriate at all for a finished product, in my opinion.

2) Physical handicaps are a tricky topic, since there's effects in the game that fix those things eventually. Some are high level (regenerate) but some are actually relatively low level (remove blindness/deafness). Furthermore, I'm not a fan of the "disadvantage" element of character building, since using disadvantages as a way to earn more "points" toward character design, in my experience, almost always backfires. Too many players are too good at picking supposed "disadvantages" that, when placed on their specific character, become irrelevant. For example, a disadvantage that grants you a –8 penalty on all ranged attacks is no disadvantage at all if you build your character to be an all-melee, all the time character. The closest I suspect you'll see us get to disadvantages like this as a fundamental part of character design are the oracle curses... but we might end up having something of the sort in the upcoming Advanced Race Guide, I guess...

3) Never. That's what gaining levels are for. Feats that increase those things would fundamentally break the game's underlying structure.

Well, there is a Mute oracle curse in The Brinewall Legacy, although as I recall it's not fully detailed for all levels.

In addition, a mute PC is actually really difficult as part of a party. Playing a mute character means you can't convey information to your friends, you can't express your feelings without a whole lot of rigmarole, and you can't interact easily with most NPCs; basically your character becomes a wallflower. My gaming group tells the story of a mute paladin PC that, quite simply, became so irritating because of his inability to speak that the campaign imploded and the player never came back.

Some things just don't make for great roleplaying; in my opinion a mute PC is one of them.

Void Munchkin wrote:

Nothing keeping you from playing a mute character already, honestly. If you're looking to play a mute character from a roleplay challenge standpoint*, then you can just play that character and you don't NEED rules for it. Just don't talk to NPCs and player characters or use effects that rely on verbal stuff (like most spellcasting). If you're looking to play a mute character so that you can leverage an additional advantage for your character though... that's not really what kind of game Pathfinder is.

*I've played in a game where one of the characters was mute, and it was frankly really pretty frustrating. Not only did it make certain elements of gameplay awkward and annoying, but worse (in my opinion) the fact that the other character was mute meant that we learned NOTHING about that character's personality. In a novel... it's different. You get to see a mute character's thoughts and all that. In an RPG, though, that doesn't work out, and so we basically just had one of the PCs in the group be little more than a stack of numbers that did a little more damage on its turn in combat. For players like me who really enjoy the interplay and interactions between the rest of the group... a mute character is a walking disappointment. Just something to keep in mind.

Give a Mute character sign language (might not fix much) and buy him ink, inkpen and something to write and draw on/in.

Again, thanks for your time.

I really liked the expanded options on certain monsters in the Carrion Crown bestiary sections - such as additional rules for animated objects, or new zombie/skeleton types, etc. Will there be expansions on Bestiary 1 monsters along these lines in Bestiary 3?

Not really... that type of expansion is great for a Pathfinder Bestiary, or perhaps for a Monsters Revisited type book... but I really REALLY would prefer to keep the entries in hardcover Bestiaries to actually new monsters. We've had to cut a LOT of monsters from each one we've done so far, so there's always more monsters than we can use already.

Dear James.

My favorite character was a 2e: skills and powers mute (and illiterate) druid: Ragnar Oak. (the spellcasting thing wasn't as important then so it was kind of handwaved)

I worked at a pool where we had too many languages to even pray for a translator to all of them so i was kind of used to this.

Communication through charades was... sometimes frustrating but more often absolutely hilarious. Levels of ability to sign with the party were mixed. I could give an organic chemistry treatise to the DM, could make myself fairly understood to two party members but a third party member was just clueless about the whole process.

This was a very role play heavy campaign.

I think the high point was when i started signing a conversation with the party's half orc fighter. about three minutes into the conversation, instead of speaking back.. they start signing back.. and the conversation goes on back and forth for another three minutes before they say... "Wait a minute.. why am I signing.. I can talk..."

A "big siege" can more or less take place anywhere there's a castle, pretty much. And as such, it wouldn't "affect the setting" any more than setting any other sort of adventure anywhere.

I made this video to introduce the kingmaker campaing for my players, Am i breaking the law?

I have all the books(i can prove) and i took all the images from google.

If you're worried about that, you'd want to ask Jeff Alvarez or perhaps Vic. As long as you're not selling the video for profit or using the video to bolster your business you're PROBABLY okay. But I'm not the lawyer around these parts...

Thanks ,

by the way , did you liked ? I know it was very amateur.

Hello James,

I have a question regarding the the Ulfen of the Land of the Linnorm Kings.

Would they (generally) accept as a king a foreigner (such as a Kellid) who, after slaying a linnorm, made a claim for power? In other words are they distrustful enough of outsiders to the point of trying to deny a foreigner kingship?

I ask this because I have a Kellid barbarian playing in one of my games that is clearly interested in this. The character in question seems to fit pretty well among the ulfen, except perhaps that he does not value appearances at all.

The adventure in question is centered around the thanelands and hagreach.

Thank you in advance.

Again, thanks for your time.

Anecdotally speaking, I played a practically-mute character back in Living Greyhawk -- the only word he uttered at a table was his name, Actiq. I played him in a fashion similar to Harpo Marx (minus the horn), and often acted things out at the table in charades fashion.

Now I almost always played him among a table with at least two other players who knew me personally, allowing me to interact with at least those people with occasional physical contact -- something I would NOT have done at a random pickup table at a large convention, for instance. But I thoroughly enjoyed playing him, and was told several times he was a PC with whom others enjoyed playing.

Dear James Jacobs,

I'm thinking about adding a homebrew-Hex for the witch class to my game that functions by physically warping the target's body into something else. Think baleful-polymorph-without-affecting-the-mind in terms of what it can do. There will probably be several choices of transformations, no number of uses, allows a Fortitude save, and a target can only be affected once every 24 hours. I'd also like to add a special action clause where the effect can be used on the witch's death throes to more potent effect.

I was wondering if you could provide any insight on how the three tiers of witch Hex are balanced, and where you'd think an effect like the one I just described would fall.

1)Will the Morozkos ever be statted up as a creature?

2)What do you think are 10 worse movies ever made?

3)I like the set up for the jade regent APs with the stats for major NPCs and new magic items after the adventure part. Is this format going to be used for APs after this one? also the beastairies in this AP have been shorter than before is this going to stay this way as well?

4)Wich do like best creaturewise the Aliens or the Predators?

5)Can Proteons or Axiomites crossbreed with Humans? What Celestial races can crossbreed with Humans?

6)I have seen some cretures that would make great new hags but weren't classified as such(example:Qallupilluk) so I was wondering why not have a Hag subtype so it was easier to identify them as such?

7)Who are top 5 Kaiju monsters other than Godzilla?

8)Do you have any idea or interest for some new Naga species?

9)Who do like better Freddy or Jason?

10)Speaking of Freddy crouger, how would you stat him up? what type would you make him? CR?

Ummm... yes?

A "big siege" can more or less take place anywhere there's a castle, pretty much. And as such, it wouldn't "affect the setting" any more than setting any other sort of adventure anywhere.

Belkzen?

My guess is that big sieges might be common there without affecting the amorphous political structure of most of the region.

Dear James: what is your opinion of this endeavor? Would you like to see something like this? If so, did I not list any features you think it should have?

Hey James,

Have you seen any epsisodes of American Horror Story? If so what do you think of it?

1)Does the Bestairy 3 have any Giants named for there environment/element(ex:fire, frost, sylvan, etc.)?

2)Are the Nephilim going to be Giants like in the old testimant or something else entirelly?

3)I am happy about the Vanara being a "playable race" but I am surprised that you guys didn't make them on par with the Garudas and Nagas because in the myths weren't they fighting against each other? What made you guys go with the "weaker" version?

4)Are there going to be any design/stat changes(other than artwork) to the monsters from the bonus beastairy for when they are in the Beastairy 3?

5)As a fighter class what are your weapons of choice? As a arcane spellcaster what are your favorite spells? and as for skills wich are your favorite(s) to use?

6)Are there actually any musicals that you like at least somewhat(ex:The rocky horror picture show)? What kind of music do you like?

7)Why is the Yuki-onna a LE Undead and not CN(or any C) Fey? Also they are incorpereal and yet have str score? In the myths they could do good, evil, or both.

8)Of the Four elements(Air, Earth, Fire, Water) wich is your favorite?

9)Why are ghosts the only undead that can be a non-evil alignment?

10)I looked up the Slender man and that would be an interesting creature. But is it public domain? What about the Boogy man or the classic monster under the bed type creature, can we have stats for them one day?

Not James, but...

The Bugbear is actually derived from a version of the Bogeyman. In the description in Classic Monsters Revisited this is made particularly clear.

At least they don't steal the cans and leave the canned corn. Piles of corn kernels and icky corn water sitting in your cupboard...

If a non-Ulfen manages to slay a Linnorm... he or she gets to be a Linnorm King. That's pretty much the only rule.

That said... whether or not the new king's people ACCEPT a non-Ulfen is a different matter. It'd certainly be tough for such a character to retain control of his/her people, but slaying a Linnorm is an excellent start.

I've actually not done any real design work on witches or hexes, so I can't really offer much advice, other than that it makes sense that if you're building a hex that causes a baleful polymorph effect, it should probably be something that doesn't kick in before 9th level, since that's the earliest a spell caster could get that effect.

1) We've pretty much said all we plan on saying about the Morozkos in Pathfinder #51.

2) The ten worst movies that come most quickly to my mind (not necessarily the ten worst if I spent more time thinking about it, mind you... and NOT including anything I've seen on MST3K) would be: Godzilla (1998–Emmerich version); Battlefield Earth, Transformers 2; Dead Space; The Last Airbender; Necronomicon; The Lurking Fear; Troll 2; The Fog (2005); and Cthulhu Mansion.

3) We'll be keeping the NPC sections at the end of adventures for future APs. The length of AP bestiaries is fluid. The most we've ever done is 11 or so, while the least is 4. We'll generally do 5 or 6 though.

4) Alien.

5) Yup to all of them.

6) Giving hags a subtype would make sense... but we chose not to do that. Partially due to tradition (they didn't have a hag subtype in 3rd edition), but partially due to the fact hat most hags are monstrous humanoids, and the monstrous humanoid type doesn't really use subtypes.

7) Ghidorah, Gigan, Mothra, Leigon, and Biolante.

8) Yes.

9) Freddy.

10) It's "Kruger," first of... I'd stat him up as a unique undead with lots of mind-affecting and fear powers. I'd make his CR be 4 higher than the party I was gonna use him against so he'd work well as a lone opponent.

There's plenty of books out there already on real-world fortifications and the like. A game book version of a book like that, in my opinion, would have to not only function as an educational look at real world fortification (complete with working stats for those fortifications), but would also incorporate magic into the mix to account for how one might fortify against foes who can fly, dragons, leprechauns, druids, balors, succubi, seugathis, and so on.

And it should have a LOT of maps. A LOT.

I saw the first episode. Got the rest sitting on my Tivo, waiting for me to have the time to catch up. I think I liked it... it certainly had fun writing, and Jessica Lang's character seems to be AWESOME. I'm hopeful!
