Thing is, you can learn about how to be a better adventure writer as much from stagnant or bad published adventures as you can from good ones. I know I've learned probably more from seeing published modules fail at what they're trying to do than what I've learned from the greats... if only because there tends to be more fails than successes in ANYthing... RPG adventures included.
Oh I agree you can learn from something bad...I think I point it that out in my post that bad things can teach you what not to do.
By complaint was more of a stagnation...there was the same old ideas over and over....did not matter if it was good or bad...it was the same. I just was not finding new things in them to learn from. The APs are a interesting approach to adventure writing...and also writing the campaigns both at the same time...which is alot more intersting and useful to learn from.

Fortunately, the master summoner isn't a requirement; if you don't like it, you just don't have to play one.
I would if not for the crippling nerf to the eidolon. It becomes almost completely useless before too long, which since you get big summoning boosts wouldn't normally be TOO BIG a problem, but you are still left with a host of eidolon related class abilities which likewise become nearly useless.
The way I see it, it shouldn't be reduced by a fraction (like half or a 1/3), but by a set number (such as -3 or -5). That, or it needs to replace/augment some additional class abilities so they are better suited to the archetype (for example, why would anyone use Twin Eidolon or Merge Forms when the eidolon is strictly inferior to the summoner?).
I actually don't really have a horse in the eidolon race, so I don't really have much to say about them. They're actually my least favorite addition to the game in the APG—not because they're overpowered or underpowered, but because I just don't really like the fact that the eidolon itself is so customizable. I would have rather seen the class summon demons or angels or elementals or some other sort of established type of creature. But that just goes to show, I guess, that not everything I think should or shouldn't be in the game should or shouldn't be in the game! :-)
In any event, if you're looking for someone to talk shop about summoners, I'm afraid I'm a poor choice.

So will we ever see a book that focuses on all/most playable races? not a "races book" like dwarves of golarian but mayb races of golarian or at least one that adds traits, feats, etc. to the "other" playable races like dhampir, kitsune, sylph, etc.
What about racial traits for the Magus?

Mr. Jacobs,
First off, I do apologize if you have covered this in another post either on this thread or in another area of the message board. There are too many entries to try and go through them all though.
But my question has to do with archetypes from the new Ultimate Magic guide.
I created a Summoner before Ultimate Magic came out, and was interested in one of the archetypes that is contained within it. Is there anyway, since I'm still a low level, of taking on an archetype as it removes some of the skills that Summoner's gain at level one?
| Gerrard Dixon |
James, for golems is there a reduction in price for making a large construct medium or smaller?. I was hoping to construct a golem and use the Construct Armor modification from the Ultimate Magic.
How would you deal with crafting a magical item that deals constant elemental damage to boost a constructs hp and then to temp hp (if at max hp) for as long as the item is worn? Example: Flesh Golem with a magical item made to deal constant electricity damage. I would think that it would since Flesh golems do not get saves against electricity spells? The item would be along the lines of a cantrip like spark or more powerful spell that deals electricity if needed. The damage would be average so there would not have to roll each round and have less upkeep.
After reading several posts that you have given info about golems I though you would be the man to ask. I plan on using it (if it works and is allowed etc) with Draconic Resevoir to absorb the damage while using the Construct armor as a balancing factor since I would think that I would be taking the damage while inside the construct being under the effect of the item.

Have you had a chance to watch Sanctuary yet? Short series but the concept behind it is quite awesome.
Have you played Total War: Shogun 2 yet? I find the concept of different nations starting with different bonuses and the options to diplomacy, intimidate, marry, subterfuge or just outright slaughter to be fun for ideas for the current Kingmaker Campaign.

HA! Actaully, I don't have a big problem with Rummy-Tum-Tugger in particular, but that is a good example of the random nonsensical monster factor that a summoner brings to a table.

I believe Wes was the one who first pushed for a summoner, although his original idea was a lot more like what I would have preferred—a summoner who conjured specific types of creatures (akin to how summoners in Final Fantasy summon specific creatures from the world's mythology, or how demonoligists summon specific demons).
The evolution of the class into something that can custom-build a monster of any type was Jason's brainchild, I believe. He was certainly the one who attached the word "eidolon" to the class.
Of course, keeping track of who originally came up with what for things like this that are born in group brainstorms is kinda tough...

I love traits. I've never used them before my new game I started recently. However, I also like the various factions (Cheliax FTW!). Are there any faction traits printed somewhere? If not, what is the likelihood of faction traits being introduced at some point?
You'll want to check out one of the five Player Companion books we printed on the five faction nations; that's where the majority of them are at.

Well... we aren't calling the Dragon Empires the "DRAGON" Empires on a lark. The dragons of Tian Xia aren't going to be called Lung Dragons though, because we want to make them our own types of dragons (Tian Xia isn't exactly Asia, after all) as well as basing them on mythology.
No more spoilers to reveal at this point. Saving some for PaizoCon and for Gen Con.

Honestly,
If you're going to do a 'races' book, I'd rather it be a very detailed one, not a 15 page booklet.A book with crunch rules for building races, example breakdowns of the core races within those rules, as well as the 0HD races from Bestiaries, and then a chapter on racial traits/feats. Basically a GM's guide to building custom races for their game world as well as a large sample of example traits (and costs for those traits), example alternate favored class abilities, etc.
I hope that makes sense.

is there anyway for an undead to be brought back to life? and what would happen if an undead was turned mortal again?
As of right now, you'll probably need to accomplish this with a spell like wish or miracle.
Resurrection type effects can undo some undead, but not restore them AS undead. For that, you'll need to invent a new spell.
Undead can be created a LOT easier than they can be brought back from destruction, so from a simple economy of action, making a spell to restore destroyed undead isn't something a lot of necromancers are really interested in, I guess. Unlike living things, it's relatively easy to make new undead that are fully formed and combat ready all at once.

Since you've kind of turned this into your alternate Live Journal do you have any recent movie reviews that you are sitting on? I miss reading your periodic reviews from that old site.
HA! Haven't really turned this into an alternate Live Journal as much as Live Journal, with its spam and advertising issues, drove me away from using it.
Anyway, the good movies I've seen this year so far would be (in no particular order):
John Carpenter's The Ward
Burke & Hare
Insidious
Trollhunter*
Whisperer in the Darkness*
Cave of Forgotten Dreams*
Thor
Rango
Source Code
Hanna
Fast Five
*This is one of the best movies of the year.
The mediocre movies I've seen this year (again, in no particular order) are:
The Rite
Battle: Los Angeles
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Haven't yet seen a movie in theaters that I've really really hated (unless you count a few musicals I was ambushed with in a block of short films I saw as part of SIFF)
As for movies I've seen this year from Netflix, the good ones are:
District 13: Ultimatum
I Saw the Devil
Black Death
The Social Network
Eden Lake
Dark Night of the Scarecrow
The Ghost Writer
Buried
Never Let Me Go
Heartless
Trinity and Beyond
Ever Since the World Ended
District B13
The War Game
Witchfinder General
Snuff
Death of a President
Noriko's Dinner Table
The Wildest Dream
Primal
Raw Meat
Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room
The Disappearaed
S&Man
Seven Days
Cropsey
Chaser
Mediocre...
The Next Three Days
The Horde
Blood Beast Terror

Salvage (2008)
Sublime
Salvage (2006)
Freeway
Black House
Creep
Ab-Normal Beauty
Wild Country
Chawz
Wilderness
Micmacs
Unforgotten
Premonition
Mutants
The Baby's Room
Blackout
The Eclipse
Haunted Forest
Dead End
Unthinkable
And the really bad...
30 Days of Night: Dark Days
Vanishing on 7th Street
8213: Gacy House
Trapped Ashes
Mountain of the Cannibal God
Art of the Devil II*
The House by the Cemetery
The Manitou
Zombie Strippers*
Dorm*
White Noise 2
Infection (2005)
The Stepfather (2009)
Toy Story 3
Art of the Devil*

Making a larger or smaller golem requires you to rebuild the golem's stat block from the ground up, using Table 1–1 to set the stats and following the size change rules as well as impact Strength and Dex and natural armor. Once you have the stats for the re-sized golem, compare those stats to similar CR constructs and then work with your GM to set the price of construction.
There's no real magic formula you can apply to the price though. When building constructs for the Bestiary, the construction prices themselves are sort of ad hoc designed.

I'd love a race book like that!
The biggest thing I'd say would HAVE to be in it would be APG style Alternate Racial Traits/Favored Class Bonus options for the 0 HD races from the Bestiaries (and these new Tian Xia ones, if necessary/possible).
New Racial "Traits" (the half-a-feat, pick two at character creation kind) would be nice too.
| Dragon78 |
You didn't like toy story 3???
Can you be more specific on the question of what 2 things I would want from a races book? How many options/ideas where you thinking of?
A races book for those many new(dhampir, kitsune, etc.) and old(aasimar, kenku, etc.) races that just don't have any options like racial traits, feats, etc. But those guidlines for creating your own races and taking "0 hd" creatures as player races were interesting as well. Also there is the whole culturel aspect that would be interesting but that could be done like the elves/dwarves/orcs of golarian type of books if a race is popuar(goblins) enough to warrent it anyway.

Are we going to hear any mention of "Great Auks" in "The Land of the Linnorm Kings supplement"? I ask because there is recent evidence to suggest in Newfoundland, Greenland, and in Iceland it would have been a big part of viking diet, it being a easily caught flightless bird that formed breeding colonies on small islands off shore.

Would you like a race book like that? What 2 things in such a book would you say HAVE to be in that book? (I didn't ask what 3 things, since the third is obviously magus-related racial traits.)
A full-blown races hardcover would be entertaining for me but I like hardcovers in general. I'm not sure if it makes sense though: it is pretty limited in scope so might not be popular with the majority. Additionally I'm traditionally averse to exotic races for players so although I'm keen to know more about aasimar (for example) I'm not specifically keen on seeing my players play them (or mostly any race that is not considered "core" for the region).
Whether a races compilation works better than the individual racial companions is unclear. If you add more favored options for new races and new classes, then you set a precedent that you may not want in the long run.
And, more to the core of it, in what form will we see the fabled Tengus of Golarion book?

Nope—most of the things that I loved about Toy Story 1 and 2 were absent in Toy Story 3. The main thing of which was actual character development for the main characters, really. Also, there were TOO many characters in the show—just because you CAN have dozens and dozens of characters in a CGI movie doesn't mean it's better to have that many characters. And really... everything that really needed to be covered on the story more or less got said in the first two movies.

What would be good inquisitions for an inquisitor of Milani, in your opinion?
I don't really see Milani as really having many inquisitors; the flavor of an inquisitor doesn't really mesh well with Milani's personality. Her faith more or less preaches against things like inquisitions.

I would love a Race book.
More details on the PCable races in the Bestiary 1 and 2.
How to play a powrful races options.
More Alternative racial traits....leaning towards ways to creat sub-races...
Racial PrCs...and feats.
Also reprinting the races from the new upcoming Dragon Empire book in a setting neutral book might be a good idea.
Although this is not a good book for it...but I would like to see a book that just had more traits. I don't think the racial book would be a good place but if you guys ever come out with another book like the APG....

Hi James--
So by my reckoning, Irori, Torag and Norgorber are yet to get the SKR article treatment. If Norgorber is going to be last as you've previously suggested--and assuming that Irori fits into the Jade Regent AP more than Torag--does that mean the AP after Jade Regent is going to have something to do with the dwarves?
That would be cool, especially if it has something to do with exploring one of the abandoned Sky Citadels.

I have a question about Augment Summoning and other 'temporary' bonuses to strength (such as the spell Bull's Strength). The rules state that for every 2 points you add, you gain a +1 to hit and a +1 to damage. What if this is going to a creature with one natural attack and/or someone wielding a two-handed weapon? Does this bonus to damage increase to +3 (or, in the case of a summoned T-rex, +4)?

Irori, Torag, Norgorber, and Shelyn are the four deities left for SKR to do (with Urgathoa being done but not yet in print).
Jade Regent features Shelyn and Irori. Which leaves Torag and Norgorber for the last one that we haven't announced yet.
While we DO try to fit the deities into the APs they appear with... that's not always possible. Nethys had pretty much nothing to do with Serpent's Skull, for example.
So, just because Torag's appearing in the AP after Jade Regent doesn't mean it has anything at all to do with dwarves.

Increasing a creature's Strength increases its Strength Bonus, and that does indeed affect every single attack the creature makes. So, if you increase a monster's Strength score by 8 points, that would indeed give it an additional +4 to hit and +4 on every attack. You base the damage on the creature's TOTAL strength, though, not the bonus itself, in the case of determining total damage bonuses to two handed weapons or off hand weapons/secondary attacks.

I'm about to start GMing my first session of a new game in a couple weeks. I'm allowing the players free reign with the CRB, APG, and UM, including Words of Power.
One of the players is a power gamer, despite my disclaimer beforehand that "you can make suboptimal choices" in an attempt to encourage RP choices. He's decided to play a Synthesist Summoner, and seems intent on building a super-powerful character.
Another player is playing with Words of Power.
I'm not too worried about the power gamer, as I think I can manage to find something that can still challenge his character. However, I'd like to know how you'd handle something like that?
Also, do you have any advice for Words of Power, given it's my first run with them?

Words of Power are really complicated, and they have a significant danger of slowing down game play since they let players mix and match and build spells on the fly. I personally think that words of power are TOO complex, and I don't allow them in games I run. My advice is, honestly, to not allow words of power unless you really feel that you can handle them and that you really feel you can trust the player who's using them to be able to do so without grinding the game to a halt each and every time he wants to cast a spell.
If I were you, though, I'd be far more worried about the power-gamer and his summoner—the summoner is VERY susceptible to being min-maxed and tweaked to be super powerful. I suspect that's why your power-gamer has gravitated to it. That's fine... but not as fine if the rest of your players are NOT power gamers. You'll run a very big risk of having the game be dominated by the summoner, I fear—if you pump up the encounters to challenge him, you'll murder the other player characters, and if you DON'T pump up the encounters, he'll just dominate the combats.
The basic underlying advice, I guess, would be that you've got a lot of work cut out for you, since you need to be a better expert on summoners and words of power than your players, OR you need to be comfortable making ad hoc rulings that your players will be eager to argue with you about.

Holomog are the amazonian culture of golarian so what race or races are they comprised of? human(black, white, asian, etc.)? do they have any other races(elf, halfling, etc.)
Holomog's primary race is humans. Probably Garundi, but I'm not discounting the possibility of there being some other ethnicity in southern Garund we haven't detailed yet. They certainly do have some other races living in the nation, though... but again... not sure who yet. Probably no dwarves, probably some elves and gnomes.
