Rays and the Buffs that Love Them

Rules Questions

So I have a few questions about rays, such as those created via the spell Scorching Ray. Let's assume you are CL 12 and have 3 rays when you cast the spell. Can you take Weapon Focus: Ray and get a +1 to hit with all three rays? Furthermore, do you get a bonus to attack and damage on each ray via a Bard's song of Inspire Courage? What about other buffs like Prayer? Could a Wizard with a 4 level dip into Fighter pick up Weapon Specialization: Ray and get +2 to damage on each ray?

Yes to all.

Hmmm... a Sorc with the Draconic Bloodline: Red or Gold could do the Fighter dip and it might not be a terrible fun Blaster build. Not optimal to be sure.... but better than normal and the Fighter BaB would certainly help with those rays.

Buffed by a level 17 Bard for +4 to hit and damage he'd be dealing 12d6+12(bloodline arcana)+6(Weapon Spec)+12(Inspire Courage) for around 78 damage on average for a 2nd level spell. Even more for an Empowered or Maximized Scorching Ray and add on a Quickened Scorching Ray for good measure and you'd be dealing 102+78 damage in one round... that's 180+ damage in one round. I'd call that contributing!

There was a 3rd edition feat I recall called "Pyro" that would stack on top of the Arcana power for even more damage (if your DM allows non PF core feats).

I agree with Are, save for one thing. While you do get the +1 to attack with bard's Inspire courage, you do not get the +1 damage.

It has always specified Weapon damage rolls, so you only get the damage bonus if attacking with a weapon, not spells.

Yet if you can take Weapon Focus for Rays, that would seem to imply that Rays are considered a weapon, wouldn't it? I'd love to hear what folks think... especially Paizo folks. :-D

Ray: Some effects are rays. You aim a ray as if using a ranged weapon, though typically you make a ranged touch attack rather than a normal ranged attack. As with a ranged weapon, you can fire into the dark or at an invisible creature and hope you hit something. You don't have to see the creature you're trying to hit, as you do with a targeted spell. Intervening creatures and obstacles, however, can block your line of sight or provide cover for the creature at which you're aiming.

If a ray spell has a duration, it's the duration of the effect that the ray causes, not the length of time the ray itself persists.

If a ray spell deals damage, you can score a critical hit just as if it were a weapon. A ray spell threatens a critical hit on a natural roll of 20 and deals double damage on a successful critical hit.

Choose one type of weapon. You can also choose unarmed strike or grapple (or ray, if you are a spellcaster) as your weapon for the purposes of this feat.

Prerequisites: Proficiency with selected weapon, base attack bonus +1.

Benefit: You gain a +1 bonus on all attack rolls you make using the selected weapon.

Special: You can gain this feat multiple times. Its effects do not stack. Each time you take the feat, it applies to a new type of weapon.

Thanks Abraham. That's what I thought.
