Describe an Oracle

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I do like the Oracle class, but I would like more ideas on what each kind of oracle would look like. So describe how you would envision an Oracle of each Mystery?

Battle is easy, Neji Hyuga from Naruto. He already had "Clouded Eyes" and is a deadly combatant within a 50 yard radius.

For Bones, I guess it would be too easy to with Goth, although a Gothic Lolita noble in Cheliax would be interesting.

For Nature I see a variation of the Wasting curse. An oracle whose body has a parasitic plant, like mistletoe, growing within and out of their body. I can see them picking off a berry out of their hair and offering to the PCs.

For Lore I have a new curse, Slave. They must wear shackles and chains binding them to their mystery, in this case to books they must carry at all times, like Jacob Marley. The books and chains slow movement and hinder stealth, but can be used as weapons to trip and flail in battle.

Well here are some RL people I would classify as Oracles--

Most of the Biblical Prophets, particularly older ones like Moses, Abraham, Deborah. In fact, as religions get started they have lots of Oracles at first and then, as things get 'organized' tend to have more Clerics.

Joan of Arc and Francis or Assisi certainly.

Deganawida and more recently Crazy Horse (dual classed).

Basically, anyone with a mystical connection to their deity as opposed to being trained in a seminary tend to be Oracles.

All the Best,

Kerney

Joan and Francis are great calls: battle and nature respectively. Crazy Horse could just be battle as well, in a world that had moved beyond armor he might get some kind of riding ability instead.

I have this idea of an oracle as someone who is simply beloved of certain spirits, the type which would be determined by revelation. They just hang around the character and sometimes do their will, grant them blessings etc.

Crunch and story wise, my choice for Battle Oracle would have to be Joan of Arc. She was driven by her "voices" after all.

That would be very good, particularly for a 'Shaman' type character. To me that captures the essence of an Oracle is.

Oracles are a bit difficult to place in an adventuring party because of their close connection with divine forces and their ability to act a prophets. However, it seems the Pathfinder Oracle is more of a battle ready type with interesting quirks.

A bones oracle might have been a grave keeper who has become possessed, his body wasting away or perhaps he is haunted by melicious spirits.

A heavens oracle might be deaf, a symbol of purity as he/she can 'hear no evil'

Some curses I hope they add in the future:

Trance: When in the heat of battle the Oracle looses any sense of self and goes into a trance state. Essentially a beserk or rage effect, that goes into effect after taking a set amount of damage or versus a particular type of enemy, but with bonuses to spell casting instead of attacks/damage.

Waking Dreams: The Oracle receives flashing visions beyond their control while awake. These visions may be of the future or past or may not even be applicable but it is up to the Oracle to interperate them.

Possession: The Oracle is possessed by a spirit that grants them bonuses but also hinders them when the spirit takes control. Good chance for fun roleplay.

You could probably make a good Bones Oracle based off Ichigo from Bleach.
He starts off Haunted and can talk to the dead spirits. And he later gains Armor of Bones (Hollow Mask), causes Bleeding Wounds, and survives Near Death many times.

As for a Fire Oracle, Liz Sherman from Hellboy might be a good template. She is definitively haunted, and would be different from most fire casters because she is dedicated to controlling and preventing (forest) fires.

Any word when we will see more Mysteries for Oracles?
