Please help with a variant monk

Advice

Liberty's Edge

In my campaign there is an order of monks that has taken a vow of silence. This is strict to the point that some of the more zealous monks have actually removed their own tongues. Other forms of communication are possible though. If you were making this variant, what ability(s), if any, would you give the character as compensation.

Umm ... *maybe* a faster/better progression of the AC bonus? I mean, if they can't respond - AT ALL - they're bound to be on the receiving end of a beat-down attempt eventually, IMO.

Giving them a "greater defensive focus" or something to compensate for a lack/inability to communicate might be ok.

Another thought - maybe "bless them" by granting some sort of Ki-pool bonuses? Like ... +1 Ki point/level compared to standard monks? Or maybe begin play w/a Ki pool already (just no "magic hands" equivalent or anything - leave that as a delay for later as normal)?

Hmm ... honestly, that's all I've really got for 'em. Other tweaks to their schtick seem too over the top, IMO, for this problem. (increase hand damage, saves, etc, etc.)

Sounds like Monk of the Sacred Mountain from the APG. They take a vow of silence at lv 17 for bonuses to AC, CMD, Sense Motive, Stealth, and Perception checks.

I no longer have this book, but wasn't this in book of exalted deeds? There was a bunch of feats, with bonuses depending on which vow you took.

There was no Vow of Silence. There Vows of Peace, Non-Violence, Poverty, and I think about 2 more.

That sounds slightly less menacing than a Carebear.

Playing a Monk with a Vow of Non-Violence just means that you never instigate harm.

Once provoked tho, man can you lay down the smack! (with non-lethal damage of course).

What are the rules about knocking everyone unconsious and then "going to use the bathroom"? Is the monk with a vow of non violence mad when they come back and "someone" (probably the rogue) has coup de graced the whole band of enemies?

Scarab Sages

I believe rule-wise it only applies to the character with the vow... however roleplay wise... I think it would start to cause issues.
