What's the most you will let the suggestion spell do?
I've been in some games where the DM ruled 'The suggestion must be worded in such a manner as to make the activity sound reasonable.' to mean it will only make the target do something it wants to do anyway. Which is obviously of extremely limited usefulness.

Yeah your dm is basically removing the spell from the realm of usefulness. The whole point of the spell is to get them to do something different. If they were already going to do it, you wouldnt need a spell.
Reasonably worded is 'You dont want to get hurt do you? You should back down from this fight.'. Or 'You have to look your best, you should wear that bright pink entertainer's outfit to the ball tonight'.

As a GM and a player, I interpert it as more a fun roleplay thing: "Hey buddy/sweetheart, it is so hot in here, please remove the heavy armor and cool off."
Anything that would do direct damage to the subject of the spell - slit your own throat, etc. - is a no-go. That's what the spell Confusion is for. :)

Hey I thought I would necro this as a list of cool ideas for 'Suggestion'.
I recently got it on my low level Bard (Im fairly new) and plan to start having fun with it, very Jedi Mind trick kind of a thing. So ideas? Heres a few I was thinking.
To a shopkeep
"You should give us another 10 percent off, positive word of mouth will help your business"
]"If you give a pretty Bard a discount she might take notice of you" (Synergy with the Charming trait)
"Chances of unloading this specialty armor is slim... you should let it go easy and re-coop your loses while you still can"
To our party's b%@@!y rich sorceress who gets kidnapped more than Princess Peach.
"You should be nice to your allies so that they will protect you."
"You should get your parents to give the party money so we can keep you safe."
To an enemy:
"You will die here, you should return home to your family."
"These are heros, surrender to them and they will likely let you live."
to a guard maybe
"Your lover is probably with 'him' now... you should return home and check on her before she goes to far."
Any other ideas?

Skill use is good. Different stuff for different foes.
For a goblin, "run away, we're too strong"
For a trained hobgoblin soldier, "go run and get help!"
For a dragon, "we're not worth it, just take a horse and leave us alone to spread word of yourmagnificentglory."
All from the same party, all conveying the basic idea "go away", but all very differently phrased. Suggest something that the target would be likely to do, even if they aren't doing it now.

I may not have liked those movies but that was a good scene.
"Your shaman/caster has made you invisible, sneak between the two fighters (provoking AoOs)"
"The caster is weak and not worth your time, killing the beefy fighter will get more rep/honor/girls."
"You don't NEED your magic to beat that little snot you hate so much, you'll tear him apart with your bare hands!"
