KingGM's Curse of the Crimson Throne

Play-by-Post

Korvosa, the Jewel of Varisia, has long sparkled on Varisia’s southern shore. Established 300 years ago by Cheliax at the height of that empire’s expansion, the city now commands its own destiny. A line of Korvosan kings and queens emerged to rule the city, establishing an infamous seat power—the Crimson Throne. Rulers have sat upon the Crimson Throne for more than a century, and the city has flourished. Yet the monarchy always seems on the brink of disaster. The Crimson Throne is not a prize to be won—it is a curse. No monarch of Korvosa has died of old age, and none have produced an heir while ruling. Even though King Eodred II controls Korvosa more fully than any previous monarch, that control remains tenuous, and many secretly count the days until their latest king falls to what they call the Curse of the Crimson Throne.

Calist Vasen:
The Korvosan Guard has been chasing a criminal known as Gaedren Lamm for quite some time. His old age has made him wise, allowing him to always be one step ahead of the guard. Like yourself, the Sable Company is comprised of experts, capable of tracking and gaining information with ease. That is why the Korvosan Guard has come to you and your longtime friend, Makoa Skullcrusher, for help. Not much is known of Gaedren Lamm besides the fact that he is old thief introducing young orphans the life of crime. Many people; however, have accused Gaedren Lamm for murder and as soon as witnesses are prepared to testify, they are suddenly murdered. To the Korvosan Guard, this is more than enough to charge him with murder and have him executed by the sword. The Guard expect you to have this man uprehended in the next few days and you have no information on his current location.

A day has gone by with little results to his location. You awake within the Temple of Erastil and begin your day by cleaning the Temple. When it is time to clean the altar, you notice a card resting apon it. This card shows the symbol of the midwife, known to represent dangerous new arrival or a new life. The card also appears to be written on the back. It reads, ”I know who you are, Calist Vasen, and who you are after. Come to my home at 3 Lancet Street at sunset. Gaedren must face his fate, and justice must be done!" You have agreed to meet with your friend, Makoa, near Castle Korvosa at noon to try to gain some information about Gaedren. Maybe this will be the break you were looking for?

Makoa Skullcrusher:

A day has gone by with little sucess. You wake up in a small inn in Old Korvosa. You begin to pack up for the long walk to meet your friend, Calist, near Castle Korvosa when you notice a small card resting apon your sword. The card appears to be a harrow card representing the Locksmith. This is known to most Korvosans to represent the beginning of your destiny. The back of the card appear to be written on. It reads, "I know who you are, Makoa Skullcrusher, and who you are after and what he has done to you. Though you do not know, you will. Come to my home at 3 Lancet Street at sunset and I will explain everything. Gaedren must face his fate, and justice must be done!"

Narciso Quall:
You wake up in a small alley in Korvosa after what appears to be a long night. Knowing of the thiefs that lurk within these alleys, you decide that it may be best to get prepared and get moving. As you begin to lift your self up from the cold ground, you notice a card resting on you. To Harrowers, this card, called the Rabbit Prince, represents combat ahead in your future. Flipping the card, you notice writing on the back as if it was directed to you. It reads, "I know what Gaedren has done to you. He has wronged me as well. I know where he dwells, yet cannot strike him. Meet me at my home at 3 Lancet Street at sunset and I will explain everything. Gaedren must face his fate, and justice must be done!"

Seldlon:
You wake up in a nice inn after a long night of studying the arcane knowing that the Acadamae that once accepted you is only a mile away. The sun appears to be brighter than usual, perhaps you slept in a little longer than usual. You walk with your companion towards the door heading out to get some breakfast, or maybe lunch, when you see a small card resting apon the handle. This card, known as the Joke, represents danger that shall soon be overcome. Flipping the card, you notice writing that appears to be directed to you. "I know what Gaedren has done to you. He has wronged me as well. I know where he dwells, yet cannot strike him. Meet me at my home at 3 Lancet Street at sunset and I will explain everything. Gaedren must face his fate, and justice must be done!"

Bralech:
You wake within your shop a little depressed from your father's passing. The place seems deserted due to the recent lack of customers. You begin your day by opening up, dusting potions while thinking of interesting concautions. Finishing early, you walk to your spellbook to prepare for the day. When you open the book, you notice a card resting within it. The image is of a Foreign Trader. To Korvosans, this represents an informative pact within your future. Flipping the card, you notice writing that appears to be directed to you. "I know what Gaedren has done to you. He has wronged me as well. I know where he dwells, yet cannot strike him. "It appears this could be our break." calist says as he puts the card into his pocket. "This is either very fortuitous or dangerous, Makoa must realize this may be a trap. Best be on our guard."
He says as he finishes his cleaning duty. After Calist has taken his time cleaning, he will then head to the castle he had agreed to meet Makoa at.

KingGM:

Seldlon thinks to himself, this is my chance to get back at Gaedren. As an elf, he knows, that he has all the time in the world but finishing Gaedren off now would go a long way to filling his plans. "Come Efreet, it is time!"

Male Half-Elf Rogue/1

KingGM:
I guess I will head to the destination, cautious that this may be a trap set by Gaedren's goons

once I reach the outside of destination I will try to find an entrance other than front door. If there is no other entrance I will sneak into the front door.

Stealth-1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31

Sorry thought my sneak skill was 12, its 13 so 32.

Makoa's eyes read the card carefully. In a deep and grizzly voice he says, "It would seem that I am getting a little help from above or perhaps it is a clever deception. Either way I will first meet with Calist. Perhaps he can help me find some meaning in this card." Adding the card to his belt pouch he will grab his usualy travel belongings and sword and start heading for the castle to meet Calist.

It seems we may be getting some help after all this time father. Bralech thinks to himself after reading the card. He then tucks the card in a shirt pocket, ties on his apron and begins setting aside all the necessary reagents he will need for this meeting. As the day wears on with few customers and hardly any standing orders to fill Bralech closes up shop early and begins mixing up the items needed for his meeting with the unknown ally.

Once he has everything prepared Bralech will suit up and head for the address listed on the card.

KingGM:

Bralech prepares
4 bomb catalyst vials
1 cure light wounds extract
1 shield extract
1 Dexterity mutagen

Calist Vasen:
As you leave the temple and head towards Castle Korvosa, you begin to hear the many conversations around Korvosa. Besides people talking about family members, most have been talking about the king's declining health saying "It was only a matter of time until the Crimson Throne would take the next monarch." Other people speak afraid that the Queen will take the throne.

Soon the castle becomes in close view after seeing it for miles. The towering, impressive heart of the city of Korvosa, Castle Korvosa towers over every other building. Atop the flat-topped pyramid of the Grand Mastaba Castle Korvosa rises high above Citadel Hill. Only the king, his immediate family, the seneschal of the castle, and his family may live in Castle Korvosa. Not far from view, you spot Makoa Skullcrusher and it appears that he has spotted you as well.

Makoa Skullcrusher:
As you leave the inn and head towards Castle Korvosa, you begin to hear the many conversations of traveling merchants and everyday workers. Most people speak of the king's declining health not believing that he will see tomorrow. As you walk by, you hear people's over growing concern that the Queen will take the Crimson Throne and destroy all of Korvosa with her endless stupidity.

Seldlon and Narciso:
Are you sure there is nothing else you would like to do this day? It is still pretty early in the morning and there is still plenty of time until sundown.

I'll get everyone to 3 Lancet Street once everyone completes their daily tasks. No hurry!

Male Half-Elf Rogue/1

KingGM:
I will head to the local tavern, find a table and listen for some recent rumers then.

Perception-1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16.

Narciso:
You begin walking around town until you walk up to a rather aged building with the words "The Smokey Tavern" sketched above the door. As you enter, a large essence of smoke flies through the door explaining the name of this tavern. The tavern is rather empty due to its many customers off working at the ports. A rather young woman walks up to you, "Please take a seat, is there anything I can get for you?" You take a seat a close distance from a group of ship workers. You get quite a bit of their conversation about the king and the supposed conspiacy around it. Apparently, Neolandus Kalepopolis has not only poisoned the king but also murdered his only brother in an attempt to establish himself apon the Crimson Throne. However, this hard to believe due to the loyalty of this man and the fact that these workers are quite drunk.

Male Half-Elf Inquisitor 1

Makoa:
"Hmmm. It seems as if this could be a trap. Of course if this it true then we must converse with her soon. Just out of curiousity, what did your card say anyway? I trust you too have a card."

Male Elf Summoner 1

KingGM:
Seldlon will make his way toward the location. He plans to check the place out early. Not necessarily going inside but scoping out the other places in the area until it is time to meet.

Is this residental area or like a market street?

Male Half-Orc Ranger 1

Calist:
"I did. However mine is a little different. Although the wording is the same the symbols are different. Where you have the "Midwife", the symbol of a dangerous new arrival or a new life, I have the Locksmith, the symbol of the beginning of one's destiny. And there is the possiblity of a trap. But..." Makoa claps Calist on the back, "With you at my side there is nothing that we can't face my old friend."

Male Half-Elf Inquisitor 1

Makoa:
"Perhaps, but we still must be cautious. We must also find out why she is helping us. Maybe she too has a problem with Geadren. Maybe she is even working with him. In the worst case scenerio we must ready ourselves, keep your senses keen and your blade close, we can't take the chance of being inundated.

Male Half-Orc Ranger 1

Calist:
"I don't let my guard down Calist." He smiles at his friend. "You know that better then most. But let us make our way there. If nothing else it is a lead." Makoa begins heading toward the destination.

So this may have happend recently, So Neolandus Kalepopolis is his right hand and he poisoned the present day king and murdered the kings brother? I know what you said Just reassuring!

Narciso concentrating on listening to the men, almost forgets about the waitress "No just relaxing, thank you".

Male Half-Elf Inquisitor 1

Makoa:
"I shall join you." Calist says as he progresses onward with Makoa.

KingGM in case you haven't read our posts we are going to the persons house that gave us the cards.

Unfortunately, KingGM (and anything else he is in) has decided not to do any PBP anymore.
