Trimmed out some stuff and revised it a bit today, aaaaand done and submitted. :)

Crap. Now we're competing against a guy with a Contributor tag.

I was secretly hoping you'd forget to enter. :P

(Not really, of course.)

The Exchange

From what I have seen, competition is very very stiff. You better make it your best or not make it at all.

I'd like to know how many sent one in..... guess
i mmight find out later at the end, when 'i can say yay I didn't win.

was fun writing it though....

je, considering i have read barely half what i had received and expect at least that same quantity (what I have read) I do agree...

so finish editing soon and send! 4 days left :D

Pretty sad that only one can win, if there are that many good ones. Maybe someone can put together an anthology of the best entries?

i want to have the full total

before spilling any beans out

but i myself feel the contest has been a success :)
it has already reached the top of the quantity I (personally) considered would make for a successful contest, considering the variety and work dedicated to all entries.
and entries are still coming!

Andrew, :P

we might talk more about that later, once the contest is done.
but believe me, it has crossed our minds.

I'll have one submitted sometime this weekend. I actually finished the first draft last week, but I just wanted to let it sit a few days before going back in for one more editorial pass and proofreading. Not sure it'll blow anyone away, though. I'm too wordy to tell a riveting story in 4500 words. :-)

Liberty's Edge

je will see Neil :)
yours is one of those who i have pending on my list of "still entries comming"

Dang it! All you super-talented people need to stop submitting. The competition's already stiff as it is. :P

(Still kidding, of course. There's no point in competing if there isn't serious competition.)

ohh and serious it is...

and i haven't even reached any of you 3.
i studied systems so i do believe in the FCFS method.even if the law of less effort tells me to read the shortest first :P

I'll make the following observation: writing fiction is a different skillset than writing game material. I try my best at both, but I'll never claim expertise in either. So, no worries, Eric. I doubt you'll have major competition from my humble entry. That said, I would like to eventually break into the fiction market. And this contest serves as a very good platform to start oiling up my rusty fiction-writing skills. So we'll see where things go from here.

Nah, I'm not really worried. Even if I lose, it was a great excuse to finally sit down and write a kick-ass short story.

I'm mainly calling attention to the higher-profile competitors to create some added hype for the contest. Maybe generate a bit more buzz, or encourage a few folks who are sitting on the fence to dive in and join the fun.

Edit: So everyone out there who's considering it should go ahead and enter. The more interest folks show in this contest, the more contests like this that we'll see in the future.

indeed any one else who would like to join the contest is more than welcome, for the people who mentioned they were entering already i expect at least 4 more (including Neil...) but if things keep as they are till now I hope for even more.

Don't thank me! Thank YOU for having a contest! I know how hard it must be to judge all the awesome stories you're getting. :)

thanks

its madness let me tell you.
there is a lot of creativity sent our way

I have already seen from the Crown of the World to Absalom and from Varisia to Taldor, I have heard the mentions of light and dark gods, and had seen almost every class/profession represented one way or the other.

So yes, its also quite rewarding.

I just need to contact the other judges to take an executive decision regarding an entry previous to your own.

Contributor, RPG Superstar 2009, RPG Superstar Judgernaut

Fire in the hole! My shortstory should have hit your in-box sometime earlier today. Hopefully, I'm not the one generating a need for an executive decision from the judges.

Likewise! Hopefully it's not mine either. If it's a question of setting, I thought I was in the clear based on the entry guidelines, but I'm getting worried now. *frazzled*

The Exchange RPG Superstar 2009 Top 8

I'd guess it has something to do with this.

rules wrote:
Please, no novel excerpts, poetry, or stories written for children. Any entries or submissions which depict or glorify overly graphic, lewd, obscene, vulgar or profane behavior, or which utilize lewd, obscene vulgar or profane language, either as part of the submission or as the name of the submission, will be disqualified at the sole discretion of Pathfinder Chronicler and/or Wayfinder. Email entries to pfcontest@pathfinderchronicler.net. You are limited to (1) entry into the contest.

Perhaps I shouldn't have set my entry in a Katapesh brothel for inner sea fetishists.

Silver Crusade

The recent suggestion to consider all of the iconics bisexual has pretty much made every story concept I can come up with unfit for submission. It's frustrating.

Best of luck to all those that could restrain themselves!

Spoiler:
I literally can't write Ezren as anything other than Colonel Gentleman at the moment.

For the record, I don't think anything should count as lewd, obscene, vulgar, or profane language if it's something you can say on American broadcast television without getting bleeped. Just wanted to put that out there.

Well, of course I've had sex with my valet!

I mean, look at him! He's beautiful!
What am I supposed to do with him?
That doesn't make me a deviant; that makes me smart!

Oh my, this contest is nearly over. I am getting emails on the hour now. You guys better save up something good for Wayfinder!

That was the standard I was going by. Hopefully "slighty naughty" isn't being counted as lewd, obscene, vulgar or profane.

It did say "no stories written for children," after all. :-)

As I've never had any fiction published, I will also be entering. My story is away to the judges, and may they find it pleasing to read.

heh. Yeah, my story has a horde of male prostitutes playing a vital role. Hope that works...

Liberty's Edge

Hi there pals,

No it has nothing to do with the content of any such story, nor do I had any content strong enought to account for lewd or anything like that.

The problem is actually one of lenght.
All of you had send stories between 3000 and 4500 words, a few extra words wouldn't have bothered me... but yesterday we got a submission that almost doubles the max wordcount.

So unfortunately we will have to disqualify it.
The executive decision was around deciding to inform it or nor (specially so others won't repeat the mistake) and if giving the author chance to crop the story or present another... of course with 2 days left this might be a really hard work.

So all of you who commented... no its not you (either i haven't reached your stories or I had read them and evaluated them).

Well I'm clocking in just at the 4500 mark now. Truth be told, the limit was a good thing. It helps the terse narration style I was going for immensely when I have to make every word count.

And now I want to write a story about Thuvia based on one paragraph I wrote... heh.

O.o

Okay, so maybe I don't know exactly how you feel...

But I understand, in general, wanting to write more about the things one mentions in passing in one's story. :)

Indeed.

And sent. Now I can go to the Big Lebowski burlesque show unworried.

Will the final 5 be announced here on the 25th?

0.o

Yeah, not me. I ended up chopping like 400 words from my first draft at the final copy. I got my 'destroy word limit like a diabetic fat kid at a chinese buffet' moment out of the way a while back, though it's a reputation I'll be poked at in good humor in perpetuity. :)

There, my entry is in. 3000 words is a lot longer than I remember it being back when I was writing philosophy papers in school.

considering that the entireis would be sent blindly to James Sutter, we will wait till he choses a winner.

Will the finalists get a private email letting them know they've made the cut?

Or could you post just the titles without the authors?

And I'm entered. Just under the wire, as usual...

Scarab Sages

Alas, I won't be entering. I've made the mistake of checking the rules questions board, and found one of the major twists in my tale is not how a certain class ability works. Pfft. It's too late to rewrite, since it affects the vast majority of the plot.

I know fiction isn't gaming, but it would probably have resulted in people scratching their heads and going "That's not right!".

Good luck whoever wins!

Honestly, I'd just submit it anyway. They weren't asking for a stat block, they were asking for a story.

I have no idea what class my guy is. He could be a ex-bard, ex-paladin, prestige class Arabian flavored sword fighter with some rogue levels. I have no idea how to stat him up, but it really wasn't important. The character was.

The Exchange

Go ahead and enter, Snorter, if you haven't already. I'm sure my protagonist, an alchemist, isn't by-the-book in his actions related to alchemy, but I entered anyway.
Who's to say there isn't a wide variety of magic/magical effects in Golarion, such that magic does work how you wanted it to under certain circumstances?

Only 3 hours to go! I'm so stoked!
