Glimzig Berenfoodle |
I'm waiting to see how the kobolds responded to the attempted diplomacy check. Might as well continue talking while we wait.
The gnome offers a smile of his own at the laughs of the elf and human noble.
"Very well, then, so long as you withdraw, and trouble neither these kobolds nor their harvest, I suppose we may as well dismiss these charges of banditry.
And you may inform Lord Cale nil Surtova that before him stands Glimzig Berenfoodle nil Medyved and is the bearer of a charter identical to his, to explore the Greenbelt and deal with banditry.
And unless I'm much mistaken, neither charter says anything about being the face of the Swordlords in these parts." he adds more conversationally.
GM Wulfson |
First off, the kobolds are not unarmed (they carry spears).
The kobolds seem confused by the gnomes attempts at diplomacy but do not lower their spears.
Although the kobolds seem afraid of the wolf, they are determined to protect "their" radishes upto and including fighting any one who they deem a threat to that patch.
As the party emerges from the woods the kobolds begin yipping
as Marcus' bolt strikes one of the kobolds the others begin shouting
Let's roll initiative.
Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Cale nil Surtova |
Cale gracefully leaps from the saddle of his horse, being a much better fighter on his own feet. "Primitives. Right. I guess there's no talking to them, even if we did speak their jibberish language." He would have to remember after the fight to talk to this Glimzig Somethingnoodle about his charter, but for now, he wanted to fight these comical lizard-things. He wondered how their scaly skins would do against his sword. He held his shield and sword out to his sides as he approached, laughing at the creatures. "Come on, then! Who's first?"
Fast dismount to K2, 20' move to G2, then demoralizing. My initiative was a 5, so it's kind of a slow demoralization, I suppose.
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22 Ride check for dismount
1d20 + 13 ⇒ (6) + 13 = 19 Intimidate check to demoralize
Arianna Tchovsky |
"Here we go again..." Arianna mutters as she slides from her saddle and hits the ground running. She lets Cale move ahead and then looks for a way to take advantage of his intimidation...or distraction...to hopefully flank whichever kobold attacks him.
Initiative check... 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Silstaren |
Init: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Silstaren shouts to warn off the other kobalds as he draws and looses at the kobald farthest to the right.
Shortbow attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9 .. damage 1d6 ⇒ 5
Does not include penalty for riding combat or obscuring mist.
How big is that obscuring mist anyway? And what's the penalty.
Glimzig Berenfoodle |
Obscuring mist will affect a 20' radius (20' high). Creatures greater than 5' away are treated as having total concealment (50% miss chance) and can not be detected by any type of sight. Creatures less than 5' away merely have normal concealment (20% miss chance). It's a great first level spell. Of course my other options involved multiple attacks of opportunity against myself, or maybe casting cure light wounds on them, one at a time.
As for the penalty for mounted combat? Depends on your mount and your feats. Assuming your mount is combat trained, you need a DC 5 ride check to control your mount without hands (free action). If it's not combat trained, you need to make DC 20 ride checks (move action) each turn to control it.
As long as your mount isn't moving, I don't think there's an additional penalty to ranged combat.

Round 1:
Initiative order:
Arianna: 1d6 ⇒ 5; Marcus: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Kobolds
Glimzig
Silstaren
Arianna
Marcus
Sondergang
Cale
On my way out the door for work, will post the kobolds actions when I get a chance
GM Wulfson |
Kobolds 1 (wounded) & 2 run around the radish patch and charge up to Cale and Marcus respectively.
Kobolds 3 & 4 step up and flank Glimzig and his wolf, attacking the wolf
Kobold #3 Attack roll: 1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 1 + 2 = 20
Kobold #4 Attack roll: 1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 1 + 2 = 4
Damage: 1d6 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3
Kobolds 5 & 6 step to the sides and pull out slings, whipping the small stones at Cale and Marcus.
Kobold #5 Attack roll: 1d20 + 3 - 4 - 2 ⇒ (11) + 3 - 4 - 2 = 8
Kobold #6 Attack roll: 1d20 + 3 - 4 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 3 - 4 - 2 = -2
Silstaren |
Silstaren's recent luck with the bow in combat holds. Sigh. May not be able to get internet during the Thanksgiving holiday. Just in case: Round 2 he'll dismount and continue to use the shortbow since there's no time to get the longbow out. If a kobald comes within 30' he'll drop the bow and engage with his curve blade.
GM Wulfson |
Happy Thanksgiving to our American players. I'll post an updated map later tonight (if i'm not in a Tryptophanic coma by then).
Cale before you ride up to the fog clous there is a kobold directly in front of you waving his spear at you.
Arianna Tchovsky |
Even as Cale is held up by the kobold and the cloud of fog, Arianna circles the fight, moving through just the edge of the mist and then behind Cale's attacker.
Melee attack with shortsword with +2 bonus for flanking... 1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 1 + 2 = 15
Damage, if applicable... 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Sneak attack damage, if applicable... 1d6 ⇒ 2
Cale nil Surtova |
Round 1: Take 3
Cale looks curiously at the yapping lizard-thing, smiling in amusement. The kobold levels its spear at the noble, growling and stabbing wildly as Cale approaches. The clumsy thing's spear is batted aside by the large metal shield, then the razor-sharp Aldori Dueling Blade slashes out at the small creature, carving a line of bright red blood that splashes out onto the radishes below.
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21 Attack
1d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 Damage
GM Wulfson |
Wolfie can go on your initiative, just run him like a cohort
Round 1 Recap
At the gnomes words the Kobolds seem slightly confused until the parties arrival seem to galvanize them into action. Marcus's telekenetic bolt striking their leader only seems to cement their impressions as they shout out things like "thieves" and "fruit stealers". The injured kobold and the other one closest to the party rush forward to attack Cale and Marcus. Suumoning up their courage the two dragonkin step un on either side of Glimzig and stab at the wolf he is riding. The wolf yowls in pain as one of the kobolds strikes the wolf's flank. The remaining kobolds drop their spears and pull out slings, whirling the leather straps above their heads the kobolds release the stones only to have them miss their mark.
As Glimzig begins to gesture wildly the pair of kobolds flanking him thrust their spears at him, trying to disrupt whatever magic he is summoning.
Attacks of Opportunity: Kobold #1 1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 1 + 2 = 12; Kobold #2 1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 1 + 2 = 12
Damage: 1d6 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1; 1d6 - 1 ⇒ (5) - 1 = 4
Is Glimzig wearing any armor? I dont see any on his profile.
Glimzig will have to make a DC: 16 Concentration check to get his spell off
Silstaren fires his bow at the kobold threatening Cale, cursing in elvish as his shot goes wide.
Arianna moves to position the kobold leader between her and Cale, the kobold grunts in pain as Arianna strikes the creatures exposed backside, slipping her sword into the creatures kidneys dropping the creature to the ground.
Marcus, unable to control his fractious mount, focuses all his attention on staying in the saddle and is unable to smite the offending kobold with his magic.
Whirling his warhammer over his head Sondergang steps up to the nearest standing kobold and strikes the ground as his blow misses the little lizard.
Cale jumps off his mount ready to strike the kobold who dared to attack him, only to find the creature slowly falling to the ground as Arianna pulls her crimson stained sword from it's body. Seeing his attacker mortally wounded Cale charges across the clearing to the other kobolds attacking the Gnome and his "mount".
Begin round 2
Arianna Tchovsky |
Cale jumps off his mount ready to strike the kobold who dared to attack him, only to find the creature slowly falling to the ground...
Arianna gives Cale a smile as his attacker falls to her blade. She then gestures to the rest of the fray.
"After you, my lord..."
Glimzig Berenfoodle |
Concentration Check:1d20 ⇒ 19
Er, no, he isn't wearing armor and doesn't have any equipment on his sheet at all, actually. I always hate that part of character creation and put it off as long as possible. Seems too much like shopping to me.
On the other hand, I never have to worry about encumbrance, either. And most of my characters are pretty close to ascetic, anyway.
*looks up rules for cohort* Never had a cohort before. Do you run one as if it were part of your character? OGL doesn't clarify
Arianna Tchovsky |
Have the kobolds gone for this round? They start off at the top of the initiative order, right?
It should be...
.
.
Kobolds
Glimzig
Silstaren
Arianna
Marcus
Sondergang
Cale
I saw the kobolds attack last round...and they got attacks of opportunity based on some actions taken by Glimzig, etc. But I don't see where they led us off on Round 2?
Arianna Tchovsky |
Ah, well...just in case...here's Arianna's action this round...which should go off before Marcus takes his 5-foot step to back away from the kobold. So, Arianna can still get in a flank...
Seeing Cale charge into the rather imposing wall of fog, Arianna goes to help her other companions...particularly Marcus, who seems rather hard-pressed. She ducks past his nervous horse and behind the attacking kobold.
Move action to J3.
Then, she strikes again with her blade.
Melee attack with shortsword and +2 flanking bonus... 1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 1 + 2 = 10
Damage, if applicable... 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Sneak attack damage, if applicable... 1d6 ⇒ 5
GM Wulfson |
No they haven't gone yet. I posted the updated map before I had to head out the door for work.
The kobold attacking Marcus's horse, seeing that the wizard is having trouble control his mount, turns his attention toward the more immediate threat of Sondergang and his warhammer.
Attack roll: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
and curses in draconic as he misses the dwarf.
The two kobolds, still intent on the wolf and rider, attack both at once.
Attack roll (Wolf): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14; Miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 48; Damage: 1d6 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3
[ooc]Attack roll (Glimzig): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Despite the reduced vision caused by the swirling fog one kobold manages to strike it's target as the wolf howls in pain again.
The remaining kobolds, unable to see, pick up their dropped spears and rush through the fog appearing on the other side (squares F-0; & G-6).
Glimzig, run Wolfie as you would your character. Roll attacks, damage, etc.. as you would for yourself.
Glimzig Berenfoodle |
Looks like I'm going to provoke attacks of opportunity no matter what I do, but I can minimize it, at least. Will perform the withdraw action, negating attacks of opportunity from the starting position and then move southwest until out of the fog, and then straight south. This will provoke only one attack of opportunity from the kobold at B4 and will still have concealment.
Wolfie was too brave to whimper in combat, but Glimzig could feel him trembling. His wounds needed tending to immediately. Glimzig only hoped that Wolfie had one more run in him. Then he would see to that criminal who started off this whole mess...
Cale nil Surtova |
Round 2
Cale's frustration grew as the cloud of mist covered his foes. Refusing to enter such a strange area, he instead retreated back toward the rest of the group, attacking the kobold there if it still stood.
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12 Attack
1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 Damage
GM Wulfson |
Glimzig: What square do you end your movement in? As you appear from the fog there is a kobold in square G-6 who may get an AoO on you as you ride by.
Marcus: Controlling a mount in combat is a DC:20 Ride check. Although the kobold is not attacking you at the moment he still threatens you, so you are still technically "in combat" with him.
Cale: RE:map The hexes east of the spider lair and bokken's have been explored but are missing the X, also the partial hex on the east side of the map has been explored as well. Thanks for keeping this updated.
GM Wulfson |
Round 2 Recap
As Glimzig retreats with his badly wounded companion the nearby kobold takes another swing at the departing wolf.
AoO: 1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 1 + 2 = 23; Confirm Critical: 1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 1 + 2 = 10; Damage: 1d6 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5; Miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 46 Sinking his spear deep into the fleeing wolf's flank.
Silstaren dismounts from his horse and draws his elven blade. Rushing into the fray the elf is oblivious to the danger of the nearby kobold who stabs at the ranger with his spear as he passes within reach.
AoO: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21; Confirm critical: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17; Damage: 2d6 - 2 ⇒ (5, 6) - 2 = 9 managing to strike the elf's exposed flank and sink his spear deep into the woodsman's side.
Arianna moves up to the kobold engaging Sondergang, placing the hapless creature between the two of them. But even with the dragonkin focused on the dwarf she is unable to hit her mark.
Marcus's horse, eyes wide wtih fear from the nearby clash of combat, continues to frantically try to flee as the wizard tries desperately to keep it under control.
Sondergang, with Arianna opposite him, swings at the little kobold between them. Only to curse in Dwarvish as the quick little creature dodges his warhammer and Sondergang manages to pound another divot in the ground at his feet.
As Cale turns to return to the others fighting nearby, another kobold emerges from the mist directly in front of him. Unable to pass up such a prime target Cale steps up to the bewildered kobold and swings his dueling blade at the little creature, missing as the kobold ducks under his swing.
End of Round 2
GM Wulfson |
Flush from their victory in forcing the gnomish interloper to flee from their draconic might (Their words, not mine) the two kobolds fighting Glimzig and Wolfie emerge from the mist to find themselves face to face with Cale and Silstaren. With a foolhardy battle cry the two diminutive warriors rush their larger counterparts.
Kobold #3 (Cale): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
Kobold #4 (Silstaren): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Both missing, but proud smiles split heir faces as they defend their radish patch.
As the little dragonkin ducks under Cale's swing he straightens up to deliver a riposte to his larger foe.
Kobold #5: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
but misses all together.
Seeing the elven ranger charge toward him the kobold spearmen rushes up to engage the mad warrior in what koboldic bards will sing about as the 'Battle of the Radish Patch' (should kobold bards ever find out about this skirmrish).
Kobold #6: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
Thoughts of glory, and radishes, fill the little warriors head as his spear misses Silstaren
The remaining kobold, surrounded on all sides, valiantly strikes at the dwarf in front of him while keeping an eye on the others around him
Kobold #2: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
Too distracted by the imminent threats around him, the kobold thrust goes wild and misses the cleric in front of him.
I took some DM liberties with Arianna, stopping her short of her original declared square in order to avoid an AoO and with Cale, deciding he would rather face the kobold nearest him than run back to engage one already engaged by three others.
Cale nil Surtova |
Round 2
The creatures were slippery, that was for sure. More emerged from the mist cloud and Cale's nerves were becoming frayed as the little draconic creatures surrounded them. He swung again, wildly, but missed once more. Sure, Arianna had killed one already, but she was a trained killer, from the looks of her. Cale was just a duelist! What was he doing here?!
5ft step to H1. I'll work on the map shortly.
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 Attack
1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 Damage
Arianna Tchovsky |
I took some DM liberties with Arianna, stopping her short of her original declared square in order to avoid an AoO and with Cale, deciding he would rather face the kobold nearest him than run back to engage one already engaged by three others.
That's fine. You've still got her set up for a flank with Sondergang.
Arianna Tchovsky |
"C'mon, we have to help Cale and Silstaren!" Arianna urges as she strikes once more at Sondergang's kobold.
Melee attack with shortsword and +2 flanking bonus... 1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 1 + 2 = 20
Damage, if applicable... 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Sneak attack damage, if applicable... 1d6 ⇒ 5
Her heart pounding, her success barely registers as she pulls away from the dying kobold to aid her friends.
Move action to H5. By using her 6 squares of movement, the path of J3-J4-J5-I6-H5 should help her avoid any AoO from Silstaren's kobold in G5. And it ought to set them both up with a +2 flanking bonus on that one. Apologies for going all tactical, but it looks like we may need it in this battle.
Silstaren |
Silstaren staggers as the spearthrust drives home. He feels the blood soaking the padding under the chain shirt. That's not good. Careless to underestimate the kobalds .
Determined to take at least one of the foe down with him he slices down at his nearest foe.
Elven Curve Blade 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 damage 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12 18-20, x2
One little AoO, what could happen?
Glimzig Berenfoodle |
The final blow was too much for Wolfie, and he convulsed, collapsed and expired.
Ride check to avoid being trapped: 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (10) + 4 - 2 = 12
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
The crippled gnome was unable to clear his saddle and landed hard. Being trapped under the body of his friend would have been insult to injury had he been conscious, or even alive to care.
Since the attack of opportunity brought them down, presumably the bodies are at C4

According to my calculations Wolfie has taken 11 points of damage. Wolves from the beastiary have a base of 13 hit points, so Wolfie should still have 2 HP's.
Cale nil Surtova |
Round 3
Cale's swings were growing frantic and he was losing control. He paused and took a deep breath to calm himself. There were two surrounding him and they were closing in on Silstaren and the others as well. His sword lashed out in a smooth strike, much more accurate than the others he had been flailing around.
Attacking the kobold at G2. If he goes down, Cale moves to H2 to close in with the group. If the kobold is still up, Cale moves to H1 instead.
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14 Attack
1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 Damage
Glimzig Berenfoodle |
Yes, I am aware that according to the rules you don't die until -[con] HP. But it doesn't seem worth it. An animal companion starts with 2d8 hp, having rolled a 3 and 4, that comes to 9 hit points (+1 con bonus), so Wolfie is out, dying at the least. Glimzig himself rolled poorly for hit points and is presently at -2HP, prone, dying and adjacent to two kobolds. Between the DM screwing me over with the starting situation and the shoot first chaotic evil PC party, I don't see any reason to keep going. Even if Glimzig lived, he'd still be convinced that the party was bandits based on their actions, and would oppose them physically and politically. I thought I had been invited to play a role-playing game, not Yahtzee with knives.
