Entangle question

Rules Questions

Can you use the entangle spell in a place where there are no plants?

Liberty's Edge

In my group we ruled that since it's a transmutation spell and not a conjuration spell it can only change what's there; In other words, it needs some kind of plant-life there to start.

The area of this spell is the plants in the 40-ft spread. So, yes, it relies on existing plants to work.

This seems to be as good as it gets.

This question has been discussed several times before. To my knowledge, no official response has been voiced on this issue. Which means it's up to us, and the Conjuration/Transmutation argument is probably the best viewpoint (IMO) I've seen on the subject.

Would a handful of seeds count for existing plants?

The mythic version of entangle first line says that it functions in areas without any vegetation. This pretty much proves that the normal version does not function in areas without vegetation. The real question is how much vegetation is required?

There's an item Here that allows you to even if there's no vegetation

At 16K gp, that's a little steep for something that aids a first level spell.

There are some stronger variants of entangle that also benefit, but yes, it is a bit expensive. I'd only get it if you're really into that family of spells.

I'm partial to thorny entanglement and thristing entanglement myself. : )
