Ranger woes

Advice

I like a lot of what the ranger offers, a mix of spell casting, fighting, and skills, plus the idea of a ranger is appealing to me.
However I have kept from playing one because I really hate the favored enemy class feature the thought that some of my most potent abilities would only work on a small number of enemies sends shivers down my spine. I like the ranger for being good in almost any situation and favored enemy seems exactly counter to that.
So I'd like to twist the rules a bit and remove the favored enemy thing and replace it with something else, however several other ranger abilities rely on favored enemy and thus I think doing this well is beyond my ability. I would like some help, or at least someone to tell me that it's a fools errand.

Instead of a new thread, you might want to do a search on these message baords - there are a few such threads already started.

Interestingly enough, many in those threads point out that the favored enemy and terrain abilities are in fact a pretty darn good abilities... some of the rangers best!

And everyone gets their panties in a bunch if anyone posts in a thread more than a week old.

Which doesn't bode well for the Ranger really...

This feels oddly familiar...

I think the PF Ranger is a bad@$$. Mileage may vary, but it's my favorite class, hands down. Even back in 3.0e, when the only class features you got were Favored Enemy, Two Weapon Fighting and some spells, I still loved it.

People act like Favored Enemies are the only enemies you are possibly effective against; FE is a BONUS to what a Ranger can already do normally. You don't deal less damage than you normally would against normal creatures, you just happen to get a bonus on certain ones. Seriously, compare the PF Ranger to the 3.0 Ranger and still try to complain.

d20 Future has a Tracer advanced class that has the Favored Enemy class feature. One of the nifty things it has the ability to spend an action point to change his favored enemy. I wish action points were part of the Pathfinder dogma because they're really useful for occasional uses of abilities. Not once a day, once a week, once an hour, once an encounter, but a limited number of times per level. It's a really neat resource to manage.

One method we tried was to make archery and TWF better and drop favored enemy.

EG, For TWF we ruled once, rangers got Ambidexterity as a class feature - at lvl 3 you suffer no TWF penalties as long as the offhand weapon is light, at level 8 you suffer no TWF penalties at all. Just those alone adds +2 to both attacks. Lets a dwarf duel wield dwarven waraxes at no penalty for example. Helps dpr quite a bit.
