Announcement: New Pathfinder RPG Podcast, Coming June, 2010

Liberty's Edge

I’d like to take the time to announce a new forthcoming podcast devoted strictly to the Pathfinder RPG, brought to you care of the D20 Radio Network.

Tentatively titled The Chronicle, this bi-weekly podcast will be aimed at players – and most especially GMs of the Pathfinder Role-Playing Game. The emphasis of our show will not be on integrating 3.5 system elements with Pathfinder, nor do we expect to feature interviews with third party publishers supporting the Pathfinder system. It’s not that we don’t think those topics are worthy of coverage – but we think that Ryan Costello’s Know Direction podcast is already covering those aspects of the game admirably. We don’t see a reason to do the same things that Ryan is already doing very well.

While we will feature some introductory Pathfinder news and forthcoming releases, the emphasis of the first part of the show will be on the world of Golarion from both a player’s and GM’s perspective. We’ll be looking at races, classes, factions, cultures and more. We’ll review new products and dig deeper into player options from the Adventure Path products and other parts of the Golarion setting and product lines. A vast amount of material has been published on Golarion in the past three years and a lot more is headed your way later this year. We aim to bring you reviews of those products and what they bring to your gaming table. Our focus on the first part of the podcast is designed to be all-inclusive. This first half of the show will not be “spoilerific” and is intended to be safe to listen to for both players and GMs alike.

The second half of the show, however, is not intended for players. We will alert all listeners who are players in Pathfinder campaigns to STOP LISTENING and turn off the podcast before we start the Gamemaster’s section of the podcast. Players will know there is nothing more in the podcast intended for them, as once we start on our reviews and discussion of Paizo adventure products, we won’t return to player oriented discussions for the balance of the podcast.

We’ll be reviewing - and deconstructing - a different Pathfinder adventure product each episode in the second half of The Chronicle. We will number the adventure’s sins and sing its praises. If you are considering purchasing the product, you will have an intimate look at what it offers – and what it doesn’t – after hearing our in depth review and discussion. Quite frankly, if the adventure is NOT thoroughly spoiled for you after listening to the second half of the podcast, then we will not have done our jobs very well at all.

But we’ll do more than review the product in detail and “spoil it”; we’ll get down and dirty and identify potential problem encounters, continuity difficulties and advice, tips for running the adventure and our own experiences when playing with the adventure material. By the time we’re done, if you don’t own the product under discussion – you’ll know whether or not the product is for you. Far more importantly, if you do own the product – you’ll get a comprehensive look on how to make better use of the adventure material you already own.
We’ll cover each of the new Adventure Path instalments on a more or less going forward basis, Pathfinder Modules – and yes – the red headed step-children that don’t get the respect they deserve: Pathfinder Society Scenarios, too.

Look for The Chronicle podcast on the D20 Radio Network and on iTunes coming June, 2010.

Yeah!!! Can't wait to listen.

The d20 Radio network is a really neat group of shows, and I'm really happy to see a dedicated Pathfinder show on the network. I'm looking forward to listening.

This sounds awesome. I think the Pathfinder Modules and Society Scenarios have a lot of relatively little-known gems that I think would benefit from a spotlight. I'd love to see a review of the Pathfinder Society Scenario I just wrote, for example. It's actually longer than even a Pathfinder AP installment, and features some very interesting elements (he said immodestly).

The looks at AP adventures will be most helpful for folks wondering which Adventure Path to choose or which adventures might work as one-off classics.

Frankly, I'm always interested to hear what people have to say about our products (good and bad), and as a fellow Game Master I love talking shop about adventures. I think you've chosen a particularly interesting focus for the podcast, and wish you luck with it.

Will you be at Paizo Con? All of our staff and many of our authors will be on hand, and might be able to offer some thoughts on some of their adventures if you're able to do (or interested in) recorded interviews.

Anyway, this should make for a fun listen!

Cool be sure to post here on paizo when it goes live to remind us.

Yes I have Eyes of the Red Raven and we'll definitely get to reviewing that one :)

I'm rather partial to starting out with the two you submitted for this year's Ennie consideration as well.

That is the thing, isn't it? I'm sure you know the uses your products are put to better than I, but it seems to me that there are probably seven "interest" groups for adventure reviews:

  • Those who do not own the product;
  • Those who buy a product to collect it, but only skim it before it goes on the shelf;
  • Those who buy the product to read it and perhaps plan to use it at some vague and uncertain date in the future;
  • Those who will use elements of a product, but not the whole adventure "as presented";
  • Those who run the product as a one-off, with characters that didn't exist before the adventure was run - and will not be used after the adventure is over, either;
  • Those who use the product as intended as part of a larger Adventure Path or multi-module adventure; and
  • Those who will use the product more or less as presented, but not as part of a multi-volume adventure.

All of these people are customers (or potential customers) of Paizo adventures, but they all buy and use the products differently. While we can't cover every possible aspect of the intended use of the product, we certainly will cast an eye to the various uses that each can be put to.

Thanks. We are both looking forward to it. As part of our preparation for all of this, I analyzed the massive page count involved in Paizo's adventure products over the past years. It became readily apparent to me that the sheer weight of the products indicated what I already intuitively believed: people love reading, collecting and playing well written adventures.

I also believe that looking back on the Paizo adventures I have run, there isn't a single one of them that would not be improved by my running them AGAIN. That's really not possible given my gaming group. For the vast majority of people - you only get one shot at running an adventure. Usually, the problems that can arise and the suggestions to improve how things can work are often obvious -- or at least -- not elusive. But most often, the GMs attention is on other, more immediate matters.

Hopefully, talking about these things can improve the play experience for those who use the products.

No, but both Mark and I will both be at Gencon. I don't know if I will have much time for interviews though. I'm one of Joshua Frost's Tier 1 GM's :) 8 slots of Pathfinder! Aiyee!

I do appreciate the offer though. I'm sure the opportunity will present itself; if not then, then on another date.

We hope so. Be kind to us as we ramp up. Most of the podcasts I have ever listened to? It's pretty much just Degrees of Suckage for the first half-dozen episodes or so. Like anything, it's a steep learning curve in the beginning.

I'd like to think ours will be a different. Problem is, I expect every other podcaster thinks the same way, too.

This is great news. Hopefully you will have the time to integrate the creators into the show via interviews and such. I love the idea of deconstructing the APs and adventures. I also love the idea Erik mentioned about the hidden gems in the world and APs that can be discussed as well.

As far as the initial start up period of the show I'm sure it will take some time to find your footing. As long as it is mature and organized I think it will work out fine. I would look to 3.5 Sanctuary/Know Direction as an example of a "garage band" podcast that does a really good job. They are focused on the game and the current topics.

As far as what not to do I would suggest you avoid korerpg.com's "style" of broadcast.

This is great news. I'm a big fan of Know Direction and am really looking forward to another quality Pathfinder podcast! My morning commute just got happier...

This is great to hear. There's plenty of room for more Pathfinder RPG podcasts and it sounds like our shows will compliment each other very well. Looking forward to episode 1. Make sure you send me a promo and I'll play it to promote your show.

When I can make $150 a day podcasting.

Unless Ryan plans to somehow podcast 3.5 Priv Sanctuary/Know Direction as part of a revamped element of Jo-Jo's Psychic Alliance Network?

Not anytime soon. :)

And thanks for the offer Ryan. Will do.

Hey Steel,

I was searching the d20 Radio site for your contact info or an e-mail address, but had no luck.

I am an experienced broadcaster/gamer looking for an outlet. I am interested in joining a podcast production team, but have yet to find the right project/team.

If interested, I'd like to discuss this with you in more detail!

Yeah - GMDave does not have our info up yet as we are not yet "live". I have sent you an e-mail so you can reach me there in the interim :).

This sounds fantastic! Now, my inner geek demands that someone make a Pathfinder RPG podcast with actual play as a feature.

I would really like to write an instrumental theme song for you guys, if you have any interest. I majored in music in college, and have a small in-home studio setup where I make not-for-profit music.

If you're at all interested, please drop me a line at jeremymillzz (at) gmail (dot) com.

Thanks, and happy 'casting!

I'm looking forward to this a good bit. Out of curiosity, since the OD podcast is now more (and greatly missed), and I know you said you might not have time for interviews during Gen Con, will this be something that you would be including down the road?

Well, its not open yet, but I found the Forum header for the podcast over at d20 Radio:

Chronicles: The Pathfinder Podcast Forums

BTW, that's an awesome name for a Pathfinder Podcast.

Oh I expect we will have interviews at some point. I think that they might be especially appropriate if we can have a brief interview with the principal designer of a featured adventure, say.

Still, these things are easy to say, less easy to schedule and actually do. For now we'd rather focus on the immediate task and not try to pre-sell a show on something that is ultimately beyond our power to deliver -- at least on as regular a basis as a potential listener might be expecting or might prefer.

Reality is, with Skype these days, in "studio" interviews are not hard to do and almost always sound much better than remote interviews in the field for technical reasons.

We certainly are not going to rule them out. We just don't want to promise something we then don't deliver on. That's neither a happy -- nor solid -- footing to start out on.

I miss Open Design as well, so I certainly do take your point.

Call me bias but I like me some Know Direction. Ok.. I'm totally bias since I'm on it with Ray. :P

But more the merrier. I've recently lost of bunch of podcasts and/or unsubscribed to them because of changes, so I'll definitely be interested in hearing some new stuff.

Pathfinder RPG is a pretty big game and the Golarion world setting and Paizo's adventure products are huge product lines.

As Ryan has mentioned in his own Podcast a few times, he's "not that into" Golarion itself, so Know Direction has tended not to emphasize Golarion in the podcast. In addition, the wider focus that Know Direction has in terms of its intended audience necessarily avoids a discussion at any granular level of detail of the nuts and bolts and specifics of any given adventure product.

All by way of saying, we're not trying to do what Ryan is doing in Know Direction -- and by the same token, Ryan is demonstrably not doing in his podcast what we'll be trying to do on Chronicle.

Put another way, Know Direction is akin to a PFRPG's audio version of Dragon Magazine, whereas we aim for Chronicle to be Pathfinder's audio version of Dungeon Magazine.

It is our hope that people will see both podcasts as complimentary and not in a mutually exclusive light. It's not a competition. Certainly, that's not our intention.

So is this in place yet? I hate d20 Radio's website. They don't make it overly easy to find feeds to all their podcasts. Maybe it's just me.

The podcast was recorded last Sunday and we are still doing drops and post-production tweaks to the podcast. It's our first go at this -- so the regular sound drops that are easy to add into subsequent episodes take some time to create first time around. Sorry for the delay. Believe me, we want this thing out WAY more than you do! :P

When the last edits are done, we expect Episode 1 of Chronicles: The Pathfinder Podcast to come in about 90 mins or so in length.

We expect it will be ready for download this weekend and will post here in this thread when it is available.

You won't have to to navigate through D20 Radio's front page to find the link. I'll post a direct link here in this thread and the podcast will also be available on iTunes of course.

Ordinarily, iTunes lags behind the RSS feed for a new podcast upload from anywhere between 4 to 24 hours, so the direct link will be live well before the ITunes feed is.

The only problem I have with Know Direction is the wait in between podcasts! Awesome idea in complimenting instead of competing against Ryan's podcasts. Golarion is the setting that I run, and any reviews of those items will help me tremendously.

Awaiting link...

This is very cool! I can't wait to hear it. I like Know Direction, and to have another podcast will be awesome. I like your concept and look forward to hearing Golarion centric topics covered.

The music is pretty much all sourced from bands that Azmyth was involved with in some capacity in the past (sound and other production aspects mostly).

I particularly liked Red Wine and Vicodin too, (the band is called High Rise Circus, by the way) so Azmyth and I debated how to work it in. I like it too much to want to edit loops out of it as the song sounds like it could have been a genuine radio hit to it imo. I think we'll end up using it as our general outro.

Whatever the case, I love that tune :)

Solid information and advice, and I was really impressed with your sound quality for a first run; the leveling was really good - I find that quite rare on most new podcasts.

I found the siren a bit annoying when you guys switched from general to GM only. Other than that I thought it was fine.

I really enjoyed it. The GM section was fantastic. So many little details I didn't think of when running an adventure.

Please keep up the good work.

Any chance of getting the Itunes podcast link posted here?

Liberty's Edge

I'd love to -- once iTunes actually bothers to post it. It's been sitting there all weekend with iTunes and it's still not cleared yet.

The link above works as a save as. And the way iTunes works, that's the download link that iTunes will actually be giving you as well. You're just getting it differently if you click and save the above link -- but it is the exact same file fomr the exact same source in either case.

Yes there already is an RSS feed.

I suppose if you put this link in your iTunes subscription information by selecting:Advanced>Subscribe to Podcast

and then past the below in the blank provided,

then doing that through iTunes will automatically subscribe and download the podcast through your iTunes client , even if the podcast is not presently "searchable" or "subscribable" by clicking a button on iTunes "live feed" itself:

I'm glad you enjoyed it. The News section was really long as we had to cover just released, in stores, and shipping soon all in one podcast.

In the future, we'll be able to make the news much shorter now that we've caught up on that stuff.

I also hope to increase the length and quality of the Player Companion discussion as well.

I expect the podcast will always favor the GM portion of the show in terms of length, as that really is our principal "meat of show". That said, I do appreciate that players want more for them too. Sounds like a reasonable request and expectation to me, so we aim to improve that aspect of the podcast going forward.

At some point we hope to add some more "humorous" elements to the show as I think it's a little "too serious" at this moment. Right now, however, we're concentrating on getting our main ducks in a row before we expand to shore up the "fun and funny" part of the podcast.

All in due time, I guess.

Thanks. While Azmyth has his "radio voice" down to a science, we're still working on ours. While it's our first podcast, Azmyth is quite an accomplished sound engineer in other aspects of his career, so I was very pleased with the overall sound quality. I don't think I was nearly as pleased with how long it too for Azmyth to edit out the crap so it sounded as well as it did though, but that's another matter.

I'm glad the sound levels and quality were satisfactory and we hope to improve that tech side over time as well as we go forward, too.

Okay, started listening to this podcast. Had to pause it at 15:47 so I could comment. I sincerely hope you are getting paid for all the advertising done thus far. I personally could have done without 90% of the first 15:47 seconds. (The 10% being the introductions, since I didn't know who you were.)

As a suggestion for future podcasts. Please put a note in the description where the advertising ends and the actual material starts so I can just skip ahead. :)

Thanks.

Listening to it now and enjoying it, but just a quick note on using the 'dungeon' flipmat, or any other with layouts you want to remain a mystery: I just use giant post-its (flash card-sized)to cover it and reveal things room by room. I also do this with maps I pre-draw on the blank flipmats. Works well thus far!

Okay, just finished it, and I really liked the breakdown and commentary on 'Crypt of the Everflame'. Would've been useful before I ran it when it came out:) Looking forward to further podcasts!
