Liberty's Edge

Waterworld was available on the Netflix instant streaming so I watched it the other night. It had been awhile since I had seen it, and all I could remember was how much people said it sucked. I was pleasantly surprised at the lack of suckiness--it was a hell of alot better than I remembered and people always said it was.

Anybody else watched any other "crappy" movies lately with unexpected results?

What Dreams May Come is a personal favorite of mine that people tend to dislike and I have no idea why.

Same goes for a couple other Kevin Costner flicks.

Oscar - Starring Sylvester Stallone. I think that movie is funny, I have no idea why it boomed.

It's a bad copy of Mad Max set on water, how could it not suck? (Yes I’m implying Mad Max sucked)

Wait a minute, were you stoned when you watched it?
If you were stoned I could understand how you didn’t think it sucked.

I...don't think you've seen Mad Max. Or even the second one. The plots are nothing similar except; loner protagonist, civilization has ended, settlers are attacked by a group of bad guys.

I didn't like Waterworld, but I loved Dennis Hopper's villiain from the movie.

My favorite Sylvester Stallone movie. :b:

I like the Ralph Bakshi version of Lord of the Rings. I know it's not finished, it's unpolished, and all that. But I still really like it.

I like that movie, too! Marisa Tomei and Tim Curry are in it.

Oscar, Clue and a Fish Called Wanda are my three favorite movies to throw on when I need a good laugh.

Heaven's Prisoners with Alec Baldwin, Teri Hatcher and Eric Roberts and based on the James Lee Burke novel. The first time I watched this, I thought it was another holdrum movie; watched again the second time and was floored. Amazing.

Also was a huge fan of Spiderman 3 after watching it again.

I LOVED that movie. seriously. When me and the wife are being all romantic we watch that movie. It's freakin amazing.

I enjoyed it. I guess a lot of people were expecting Robin Williams to do some comedy spiel or something. So many people are typecasted in films/tv. That said, it's been interesting seeing him stuff outside of comedy films.

Serenity?

Ditto. The first time I watched it I thought it was ok. I've seen it a few times since then....amazing.

I would add to the list Stander. I saw it at Sundance and was blown away. Disappointed it barely registered when it was released later that year.

Shadow Lodge

After watching Dragons of Autumn Twilight, I noticed some people didn't seem to think it was very good. I didn't like the way the draconions were animated, but that was it. Everything else good.

The Gamers movies.

I liked the second one (which I saw first), but after hearing how good the first one was and going back to see it I thought it was pretty bad.

I really love The Stupids, as does my whole family, three generations worth. But we seem to be a minority.

Soldier, with Kurt Russell, is another one of mine that I think has a lot of merit that gets little respect

I heard/read that Soldier was kind of a spiritual successor to Blade Runner, I haven't seen it yet, but it sounded like it would be good, premise-wise, but I haven't seen the execution of it...might have to netflix it.

Sorta... they make some slight reference to the battle mentioned in the Blade Runner movie when the main replicant is making the speech at the end, but the bigger reference (the actual battle scene) to it was only in the trailer and not in the actual film. They mainly just mention that the main character took part in the battle.

Still, I enjoyed that film.

It is not so much a successor as set in the same universe. Some of the battles that Kurt's character has fought in are space battles mentioned in Blade Runner, iirc.

It is an ok movie and has some themes and blatant lines in the movie for a Blade runner fan to catch onto. Over all though it maybe in the same universe, it is not in fact any sort of sequel.

I also found Soldier to be a good film.

Oh yes I remember his speech: "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die."

Well...thanks to google I remember the speech...
I'll definitely have to check out soldier then.

The Postman would be my Costner movie.

Copland would be my Stalone movie.

Sovereign Court

Waterworld was decent, the Postman had some interesting ideas but was pretty bad. The one where Costner is a serial killer was pretty good too.

And I think Three Amigos doesn't get enough love, that move is brilliant.

Scarab Sages

Actually, for me, what ruined Waterworld was not the stoic hero. It wasn't even the rather silly plot, "A tattoo map to dryland on a child."

I couldn't stand the villains. They were unbelievable and unbelievably stupid. When all the bad guys are inane incompetents without a clue, winning isn't really much of a challenge nor even that interesting, except in comedies.

Eddie and the Cruisers

The Rocketeer

I dunno why, I like both of 'em.

The reason you like Rocketeer is because it's AWESOME.

Also, Jennifer Connely.

The Rocketeer is indeed awesome.

Oh man, that was a great movie. I especially love the bar scene and the singing bush/invisible swordsman scene. Dunno why, but those parts were great.

Liberty's Edge

Zoolander and Super Troopers are two movies that are very funny, and don't get a lot of love.

The bear scene is worth the whole movie.

For me it was the first 20 minutes, right up to the line, "you boys like Mexico?! Yeeeehaaaw!"

After that, the rest was gravy.

Sinbad

Many planescape concepts illustrated in one single kid movie...

Scarab Sages

Water is a hilarious movie that precious few seem to know.
Let the right one in - one of the best vampire movies I have seen (but since it made it to the inspirational list for Classic Horrors Revisited it seems to get more respect than I thought...)

I have not seen that movie in about 20 years. My wife grew up in the Carribean and I think she would enjoy it. Looks like I will have to hunt down a copy.

Mmm. My young adult fantasy girlfriend.

It was always a competition between her in Labyrinth and Mia Sara in Legend and Ferris Bueller's Day Off, for who I loved more!

And then Jennifer Connelly appeared as a flapper-y torch singer in Dark City, and I swooned.

Hudson Hawk

"Would you like to swing on a star..."

Last Action Hero

This movie was a tremendous bomb when it came out, but I think people just weren't ready for Schwarzenegger to make fun of himself like he did. I think its really quite clever.

This, for example, is brilliant

My wife has thrown her two cents in with The Long Kiss Goodnight.

The scene in where she catches her student smoking while carrying a rifle was funny.

Silver Crusade

Dark City is awesome sci-fi noir and you should totally watch it.

But for heaven's sake, only get the Special Edition that doesn't have the tacked on prologue that the studio demanded be slapped on to explain the entire plot. If you can't get that version, just fast forward past it. Trust me.

Witchfinder General

I love Vincent Price. The guy is such a ham you can't help but love his villains.

His role in Witchfinder General is different. You will hate him. Easily the most serious, evil character he's ever played. Be forewarned that it is not an easy film to watch at times.

Copland is the best thing I've ever seen Stallone do, and he stole the show as far as I'm concerned, which is saying something with that cast. The 'I can't hear you, Ray...' part screwed me all up:)

Recently, a film called 'Moon', starring Sam Rockwell, knocked my socks off. Not many people seem to have seen it. Best thing I've seen in awhile.

Waynes World 2.

"in the event of capture, you will each be issued a cyanide capsule, to be placed under the tongue like so. Any questions?" makes me laugh every time.

Moon was really good. I also recently saw Primer and Let The Right One In. I would highly recommend both of them.

They can both be seen on Netflix Instant Watch as well!
