Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

I just wanted to say that for me, the Adventure Path + Companion subscriptions = Dragon + Dungeon (but mixed around). The articles in the APs + the companion crunch fills Dragon for me. The rest is more Dungeon-y.

And much easier to 're-find' when looking for years later!

"PRPG is 100% open" what does that exactly mean? Someone can write new spells, feats, items, etc for it. Even classes or PrCs. What are the limits?

If someone wanted to make contributions to Golarion (through Wayfinder or KQ) would that also be possible? And to what extent?

I know PRPG and Golarion are two separate things, but to be frank I have a hard time separating the two; And as a complement to you I think Golarion is an important part of PFs charm.

PRPG is the ruleset, and anybody can use them for their own products through the Pathfinder Compatibility License/Open Gaming License.

Golarion is Paizo's intellectual property, and can't be used by third parties without special permission and approval. For Wayfinder, we can do this through the Community Use Policy, as we are not (and cannot) charging for its content. For KQ, articles are sent to James & Company for approval.

Wayfinder #3's submissions are closed, but Wayfinder #4's submissions will be opening up at some point later this year. None of what is submitted to Wayfinder should be considered canon or "officially" part of Golarion, though!

So you cannot actually make money off Wayfinder, even just to cover costs and time? Like I said I would pay for the quality of the work you do with it.

Noooo! Where would I go for porn? Magazines?

Why not do what you did pre-internet?

Not a copper - that's how it is. However, Paizo is generously allowing us to take donations to cover print costs for Wayfinder #3 (which we would dearly love to have - read here to see how to get a print copy for your very-own-self).

Shame on you, Sebastian!

To add to and clarify what James said:

Every* rules element Paizo publishes is Open content, meaning any other publisher can use it. Like a spell in the Cheliax book? Any other publisher can give that spell to a caster in one of their books. Like a new prestige class in an issue of the Pathfinder AP? Any publisher can create and publish a character with that prestige class. Like the new base classes in the Advanced Player's Guide? Once they're published (later this year), any other publisher can publish a book full of NPCs using those classes, or new spells/feats/whatever for those classes.

When James says "it's more Open that D&D was," he means that while the PH, DMG, and MM for 3.0/3.5 were Open content in this way, few other books from Wizards were declared open (psionics, epic, and a couple others, and that's about it). So if there was a cool spell in Tome and Blood that another publisher wanted to use, they couldn't because that book isn't Open. Or if there was a cool subsystem about heat dangers that appeared in Frostburn, another publisher couldn't use it because that book isn't Open. This isn't a knock on Wizards, they (and I was working for them at the time) did an amazing thing by making the three core rulebooks Open so anyone could publish 3e-compatible material; Paizo has merely taken that to the next level and opened up all rules content of every Paizo 3e/PF book.

As for the difference between the PFRPG and Golarion being two separate things, it's a division of "game mechanics" vs. "proper names." Anyone can publish stuff for Paizo's game, but in general they can't publish stuff for Paizo's world. A publisher could publish The Big Book of Guns in a Fantasy World, complete with game mechanics for flintlocks, muskets, revolvers, and so on, but they could not publish The Big Book of Alkenstar Firearms (even if it had the exact same rules content) because they don't have the right to use the Paizo-owned name "Alkenstar." Likewise, if a publisher really likes a "Sarenrae dervish" prestige class published in the Pathfinder Chronicles, they can use the mechanics of that class, but they'd have to strip out the proper names and call it a "Sun Goddess Dervish" prestige class.

Note that the above stuff specifically refers to *publishing* new material. It doesn't stop you from using Paizo's Golarion stuff in your home game, or creating new Golarion stuff for your home game, or even writing up cool new Golarion stuff and sharing it for free on the internet as long as you follow our Community Use Policy. Wayfinder follows the Community Use Policy which says they can't charge for the content they create. KQ has a unique relationship with Paizo that allows them to publish certain Golarion content with our approval.

Hopefully that hasn't confused you. Basically: (1) The Open Game License lets people use any of our rules. (2) The Community Use Policy lets fans share new content they create for our world of Golarion for free.

* With the exception of two specific monster published in the Pathfinder AP that aren't Open because we got special permission to use someone else's monster idea, but not permission to make the monster Open content.

On the other hand, you could probably make money selling "I support Hugo and Lilith" t-shirts, provided they are entirely unrelated to Wayfinder in any way.

I wish I could blame all those folks for corrupting MY son, but I have a feeling it's more accurately the other way around.

Oh Kobold Cleaver, where did I ever go wrong?
