The young wizard seems to fill with pride for a brief moment before he notes the good natured sarcasm of Senmonts words. His shoulders slump and he blushes furiously. "This is going to be a long trip." he says to no-one in particular.
Tymothy looks at Alizar a little confused and shrugs "I played no part in this, but it smells like my old masters pipesmoke." he said as he looked around and gave a shrug of his shoulders. He lingers in the area looking up at the sky eventually scrambling to follow after the group when they depart.
Lianth of Mist Lake |
Lianth is confident that her tracking skills have led her to the correct tree, and Roarke certainly seems to agree, so she informs the others, "The source of the mirages may have clambered up this tree, or be fluttering among it's branches. Do we wish to dismiss this as some fey prankery, and laugh it off, as would be wise, in that case, or take some stronger action to resolve the mystery or punish the miscreant?"
"For the record, I am opposed to burning down the forest, to elimate one potential danger, particularly if the trickster is fey, and could simply fly away..."
"If we are going to dismiss the incident, I would recommend that we continue on. We have a fair distance yet to go."
Drosk Ironhame |
Drosk re-shoulders his back as he sets out with the others.
"Aye, I'm not one for havin' much patience with this trickery. Let's get on to the Crypt!" he exclaims, giving the tree a dark glance.
DM Doom |
The group travels onward following the map making the trip that much easier. Alas after a time they find the light fading, the setting sun causing the realm beneath the forest canopy to take on a whole new feel as darkness sets in. It doesn't take long for Lianth and Anwyllia to find a good camping sight free of uncomfortable rocks and roots and near enough to a small stream to fill water skins come morning. As the cheerful sounds of the day fade to the more ominous sounds of the night some in the group may find themselves experiencing their first evening in the woods away from home. Tymothy certainly seems to grow even more fearful at this.
Alright, I already took care of survival checks for finding a good campsite so no worries there. I need to know what your routines for the evening are and what the order of the watch is.
Lianth of Mist Lake |
"If we are going to set up some sort of watch, I would prefer the first or last watch, as to accomodate the rites of my faith." Lianth says, dividing up some of her rations to Roarke, who gulps down the scanty portion of jerked meat and then gnaws on the hard rolls, leaving her a wedge of cheese and a couple of carrots for her own dinner.
After eating, she begins assembling a tiny figure of sticks and bark-twine, vaguely resembling a tiny person, which she leaves propped up against a stone, as if to keep watch. Those native to the village will recognize these manikins as being something of a signature of the 'Witch of Mist Lake,' being scattered throughout the woods, and being reputed to have some occult significance.
Knowledge (arcana) or Spellcraft DC 10 will determine that they are nothing of the sort. Just creepy affectation.
Drosk Ironhame |
Drosk tries to enjoy the night's hearty meal of...trail rations.
"I don't mind taking the late watch," the dwarf priest offers. "My night eyes should be of most benefit then."
Before he turns in, Drosk changes into his studded leather armor. "Braggar always says ye should never let yer guard down."
Alizar Flit |
"First night in the wilderness for anyone? This isn't a bad patch of land. Tymothy, can you make some illusions to improve others perception of our defenses?"
"I will take the watch four hours after it begins, dead of night I suppose, I don't need sleep."
Alizar sits against a tree, looking over his weapons closely for damage. If any food is available, he will take a small amount, enough to sate his hunger.
"Jimes always said to take what you can, but I'm more reserved than he."
Knowledge local check for the stick figure information 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
I'm inferring local knowledge of Mist Lake would let me know the significance of the stick figures.
"Such superstitions about the lake, if they work or not, who knows. Do you know the witch?"
Alizar Flit |
"Beliefs of men, eh? Those who are quickened have fragile ideals. Of course, anything wished hard enough can manifest. I remember vaguely some effigies from my home, that was long ago, but the same beliefs were held, but over a much longer time.""
To Lianth:
"Would it be possible to meet this witch? I have been curious about her."
To Anwyllia:
"I will be within a tree while on watch, better for a surprise."
DM Doom |
You set up the watch with Lianth taking the first, Drosk second, Alizar third and Senmont the fourth. Tymothy shakes his head as to whether or not he can aid anyone and after a brief meal he turns in falling to a fitful sleep. For those who haven't slept outside the comfort of their own home or an inn the evening in the forest is quite the contrast. Bugs chirp, underbrush rustles as nocturnal animals begin their search for food, wolves howl in the distance. The group, being mostly composed of those familiar with the wilderness, sleeps more or less soundly.
Lianths watch goes uninterrupted while the others sleep, or Trance in Alizar's case, through the night. She drifts off after awakening Drosk for his turn at watch. Not long after she turns in he swears he hears something in the underbrush though a moment of listening reveals no further sound. All seems well for the next half hour until two lean forms burst forth from the surrounding underbrush at the unsuspecting dwarf. One over shoots it's mark but the distraction is enough for the other to actually get a firm grip on the dwarves leg, biting down painfully as it pulls him to the ground! Drosk hears a yelp that sounds as though it came from Tymothy.
Surprise round
Wolf 1: Charges Drosk and misses.
Wolf 2: Charges and bites for 3 damage. Rolls 19 trip attempt knocking him prone.
Wolf 3: Bites Tymothy's leg through the bedroll for 2 damage.
You awaken to the sounds of struggle and spy Drosk on the ground with two wolves attacking him and one wolf biting Tymothy through his bedroll.
You are able to act this round. You start out prone and in your bedroll. It will take a full round to get out of said bedrolls though if you make a DC 10 escape artist check or beat a CMD 15 you can get out and up as a move equivalent action.
You awaken to the sounds of struggle and spy Drosk on the ground with two wolves attacking him and one wolf biting Tymothy through his bedroll.
You're awake but groggy and cannot act in round one. See "Success" come round 2.
Round 1
- Senmont: 20
- Anwyllia: 17
- Alizar: 17
- Wolves: 16
- Lianth 14
- Drosk 4 (hp 6/9, prone)
- Tymothy: Last (hp 7/9)
The wolves charged for the surprise round so their AC is 12
Alizar Flit |
perception 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
escape artist 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
With unbridled grace, Alizar rolls out of the bedroll and in the same rolling motion grabs his rapier, and stands up, ready for action.
Intent is to move silently and hide to behind the nearest wolf for some sneak attack action
Lianth of Mist Lake |
Lianth's Perception 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
Roarke's Perception 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Lianth wakes and attempts to squirm out of her bedroll while readying her longbow.
Escape Artist 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Roarke just leaps up and attacks the wolf attacking Tymothy, unencumbered by bedroll or the length of time it takes a two-legs to get to it's feet.
bite 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
free trip attempt 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Drosk Ironhame |
DM Doom, Anwyllia posted that she would be gone until the end of May. Do you want to post for her?
BTW, I'll wait for the wolves' actions before I post Drosk's action.
DM Doom |
The camp is soon filled with motion as those resting awaken to see the night has not gone peacefully. Senmont struggles to slip out of his bedroll, Anwyllia, Alizar and Lianth manage to get out of theirs and pick up their weapons. The wolf attacking the trapped Tymothy spies Rourke advancing and only manages to drop his prey in time to defend against what would have been a much more vicious blow. The wolf that had missed Drosk earlier spies it's companion being attacked by another larger wolf and moves in to flank, together the two of them aren't able to trip Rourke but one does bite him savagely about the neck. The other wolf latches onto Drosks arm shaking it's head violently in an attempt to keep the dwarf down. All the while Tymothy stays hidden in his bedroll unable to really get out with the three canines fighting over him.
You notice the wolves look lean and downright starving. Their being smaller than Rourke clearly more due to their malnutrition rather than being small examples of their species.
- Senmont full round action to get out of bedroll.
- Anwyllia, Alizar, Lianth: Get out of bedrolls and ready weapons.
- Wolves: hold action for Rourke to attack pushing them to init 14, their init is resolved after Lianth and Rourke due to lower dex bonus.
- Wolf 1: Attacks Drosk for 4 points of damage.
- Wolf 2 and 3: flank Rourke, one misses one hits for 5 damage. Trip attempt fails.
Wait for Drosk to post his action then proceed to round 2.
Round 2
- Senmont: 20
- Anwyllia: 17
- Alizar: 17
- Lianth 14 (Rourke hp 8/13)
- Wolves: 14(#3 hp -2)
- Drosk 4 (hp 2/9, prone?)
- Tymothy: Last (hp 7/9 full defense)
Drosk Ironhame |
Round One:
"TORAG!" Drosk shouts, lying prone on the ground.
Channel Energy: Supernatural ability (doesn't provoke AoO), 30 ft. radius burst of healing energy centered on Drosk.
Channel Energy: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Drosk stays where he is so as not to provoke an AoO from the wolf.
Drosk Ironhame |
Sorry! Meant to add the following flavor text:
"TORAG!" Drosk shouts, lying prone on the ground. The hammer-shaped birthmark on the dwarf's cheek glows with a holy radiance that spreads out to engulf the party, healing any wounds suffered in the initial wolf attack.
Alizar Flit |
move silently and/or tumble to reach a flanking position on the wolf attacking drosk move silently 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Tumble, if needed 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Intent is to not have any wolf within melee reach. Lucky for me, you can't fail skill checks on 1's, I just likely failed them anyway.
Attack with rapier 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15 If successful moved silently, wolf is denied dex; if tumbling +2 for flanking
Damage-rapier-2d6 + 1 ⇒ (1, 4) + 1 = 6 with sneak attack.
If wolf faces me-1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
The litany of horrendous rolls continues, following me from my other pbp game; Valanos, will you ever do well with the dice?!
Lianth of Mist Lake |
Roarke continues to attack the wolf he already bit, somewhat perplexed that he felt a powerful bite, and then felt the wound burn away moments later, and feeling harried on all sides, his concentration split between the wolves flanking him.
bite 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
free trip attempt 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Lianth takes a single shot at the wolf flanking Roarke, but is hampered by her wish to not accidentally shoot her furry friend.
longbow attack, -4 attacking a foe in melee 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5
damage 1d8 ⇒ 3
Lianth of Mist Lake |
No one wanted to make a knowledge nature check? Doesn't take up an action or anything... ah well.
If this is one of those things that Lianth would 'just notice,' she's got a +6 to the check, but she wouldn't be inclined to wake up under attack and start pondering their motivation. :)
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
DM Doom |
Mayhap,
Should I put up a skill check spoiler like that without specifying anything please assume it applies to anyone who has the skill. Also note: if I recall correctly, you can make untrained knowledge checks, but only for getting information that equals a DC10 difficulty. This constitutes not common knowledge so much as perhaps you heard it here or can deduce it there.
The burst of energy emanates from Drosk as the fight takes a rather different turn. Anwyllia lets fly two arrows at the wolf attacking Drosk, one arrow strikes the beast in it's side while the other pierces the ground dangerously close to Drosk's face. Senmont moves to relieve Rourke pulling out his falcata and swinging it at one of the foreign wolves, it lets out a pained yelp and turns to face his other attacker taking the heat off Lianths' companion.
Alizar moves to aid the dwarf managing to find a hole between the various combatants to slip through and move up behind the wolf. The beast, however, seems quite aware of the elf, twisting it's body to turn an otherwise deadly blow into a glancing one before snapping at the him and almost pulling him down. The other two predators don't fair much better, with one attacking Rourke and one attacking Senmont neither are able to get past their opponents defenses.
- Drosk channels energy healing himself and everyone else for 6 points.
- Senmont attacks wolf 2, hitting for 12 points of damage.
- Anwyllia hits Wolf 1 for 8 damage.
- Alizar is unable to get a flank (the wolf is not threatened on opposite sides and Drosk doesn't count yet) but is able to it after hitting for 2 damage.
- Wolf 1 turns and attacks Alizar for 4 points of damage.
- Wolf 2 turns to attack Senmont, missing.
- Wolf 3 attacks Rourke and misses.
Simply getting behind a wolf doesn't constitute a flank. It must be threatened from opposite sides which it isn't until Drosk engages it. Either keep sneak attacks seperate or if you don't then use the first d6 as the weapon damage dice in case it is nullified somehow. In this case it would be 1 +1 str damage. Otherwise you're getting a free re-roll. As I wasn't clear on that or the fact that it's not considered threatened yet there's no worries regarding the AoO. Also: your CMB and CMD should be +1 and 14 respectively.
Round 2
- Senmont: 20
- Anwyllia: 17
- Alizar: 17 (hp 5/9)
- Lianth 14 (Rourke hp 13/13)
- Wolves: 14(#2 -12hp #1 -10hp)
- Drosk 4 (hp 8/9, prone)
- Tymothy: Last (hp 9/9 full defense)
Lianth of Mist Lake |
Round 3;
Rourke continues to snap at the wolf in front of him, snarling a warning as he does so.
bite 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
free trip attempt 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Lianth takes another shot at the wolf attacking Rourke, still pulling her aim to avoid hitting her companion.
longbow attack 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (20) - 1 = 19
damage 1d8 ⇒ 2
Drosk Ironhame |
Posting Drosk's action early in case I can't post in a timely manner tomorrow.
From his prone position, Drosk takes a swing with his warhammer at the wolf threatening him.
Attacking from prone: -4 penalty on melee attack rolls. A prone defender takes a -4 penalty against melee attacks, so Drosk currently has AC 11 (studded leather and heavy shield).
Attack: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (13) + 2 - 4 = 11
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Drosk Ironhame |
Actually, Drosk, wouldn't that be your action for the end of the last round? You still get one this round...
I guess you're right! I guess I'm disoriented from being surprised by the wolves...
