[Raging Swan Press] Retribution Available!

Product Discussion

What Ho All,

I just wanted to take a moment to let everyone know the exciting news that Retribution is now available for download from the Paizo store. Listings on Amazon.co.uk
and Amazon.com should go live next week (It’s available for pre-order at Amazon.co.uk now but for some reason Amazon.com lists it as out of print; please bear with me while I sort that out!) Retribution has also just picked up a great review by Ed Greenwood, creator of the Forgotten Realms! Here’s what Ed had to say:

“A fantasy roleplaying campaign can always use spooky, atmospheric low-level adventures, and RETRIBUTION is a solid, useful foray. It's "old school" in the best sense of that term: the adventure, its setting, its characters, and its new elements have all been carefully and lovingly detailed and thought through. The result is truly ready-to-use, and its elements lend themselves to easy re-use in an ongoing campaign. Recommended.”

About Retribution
A Pathfinder Roleplaying Game adventure by Creighton Broadhurst for four 1st-level PCs

In the frozen depths of winter, murderous winds mercilessly batter the crumbling Priory of Cymer. Within, trapped by their duty and the heaped snowdrifts that render travel near impossible, the few remaining faithful huddle together and tend the sacred places of their forbears. With the weather worsening, nerves fray and tempers snap as the wind howls its mournful dirge for the forgotten dead of a fallen time. But the worst is yet to come. One of those trapped within holds a murderous grudge that only blood can expunge, and as the storm reaches its savage height, terrible revenge is wrought amid the frigid halls and faded glories of a bygone age.

Creighton, is there a print or POD version of this, or just the pdf version? I'd prefer the former options, but will buy it as a pdf if that's the only option.

Thanks.

I have print versions available on Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com

You are welcome to buy either (or both)

;-)

Don't forget the free web enhancements on my website, also. If you do pick up Retribution, I'd be keen to get your feedback (good or bad).

Ok, I went for the print version. I'll try to post something after I get it and peruse it.

Fantastic! I look forward to your comments.

Alright, arrived in the mail from Amazon today, so here are my initial impressions.

Disclaimer: it uses the PFRPG rules, which I no longer own, so I can't really critique rules crunch.

Pros:
$10 for a print copy, over 60 pages long. That's a steal. Add to that free supplemental pdfs and it's an even better bargain.
The art is pretty good for a small 3pp publication. I very much like the Elmore NPC portraits.
Good, clean presentation. Interesting plot setup. Offers roleplaying options beyond hack/slash (i.e., not a standard dungeon crawl).
Generic setting & deities means you'll have little to no trouble placing it in your fantasy campaign world of choice. If you even need to do that.
Spelling errors and typos are rare, which I quite appreciate.

Cons:
British English. No, that's a joke ;-)
Nothing comes immediately to mind after a skim through. There's no cover picture, which is unusual, but there's a fair amount of b/w art packed into the 60+ pages.

Someone w/ a deeper understanding of the PFRPG ruleset can critique it better on that front. But my initial impression is this is a solid product and would be a lot of fun to run as a 1st adventure.

Hi Ben,

Thanks for the kind words - I'm glad you liked Retribution. I was intrigued that you don't play Pathfinder and yet purchased Retribution. What system do you play and are you considering converting the module? I have been considering doing an OSRIC edition as I'm hoping to play some of that game soon. (I started role-playing with 1st edition and recently discovered how good OSRIC is!)

Also, I don't suppose I could talk you into posting your review of Retribution to Amazon and/or Paizo? That would be fantastic!

;-)

I don't currently play PF; I haven't made the leap from 3.5 yet. I still want to work through my mountain of 3.5 adventures/modules. I bought this anyway b/c I'm sort of what you might call a "loyalty" purchaser. For example, I buy a lot of Paizo stuff b/c of my appreciation for what they did w/ Dungeon magazine as well as their contributions to Greyhawk. So I bought your adventure for a similar reason; in appreciation for your own work w/ Greyhawk.

When I do finally switch over to PF, I will have another module to choose from for a 1st level party, and that's great. As for your quite understandable enthusiasm for me to write up a more formal review, I'd be disinclined to do that for 2 reasons. One, as mentioned already, I don't play PF and so couldn't give a real thorough examination of how you implemented the (somewhat) new rules. Two, I also haven't really thoroughly read through it, never mind played through it. So I don't think first impressions are weighty enough for a full review. But that's just me.

Still, it's obviously a well-crafted module for an extremely reasonable price point. While there seems to be a growing field of 3pp products, most of those aren't adventures, so I hope people find this and run w/ it!

Interesting. I actually started writing it in 3.5 but switched to Pathfinder just after Gen Con. I know what you mean about having a vast mountain of 3.5 stuff to get through; I'm very much in the same boat which is part of the reason why I switched to writing it in Pathfinder (and also, or course, it's a great system).

Were you an LG player, then?

Not to worry about posting a review; it never hurts to ask, though!

Never had the pleasure.

I haven't read one word of Retribution yet, but based on the quality of the adventure/setting description and wealth of free web enhancements, I ordered a copy from Amazon this week and hope to peruse it this weekend.

Any sense of when we might expect a glimpse of Swallowfeld - and will it have a print edition?

I believe Swallowfeld is already available as a free pdf.

Fantastic! Thanks very much - I hope you like it. I'm very keen to get any feedback you might have.

Swallowfeld is due to release as a PDF on Thursday 21st of April. I'm going to start previewing it on Thursday 7th with the first of two sneak peaks. (The document is in final review with my developer a very reliable chap call Eric Menge as we speak). Sadly the page count of Swallowfeld is below the minimum required for my printer and if I was to release it as a print product they would stick 20 blank pages in the back. (Not ideal).

However, in a few months I'm planning to collate The Lonely Coast (a free download from Paizo or my website) and Swallowfeld along with all the free web enhancements I'm planning for Swallowfeld (and hopefully some new stuff) into Borderland of Adventure. Exact page count is still TBC but it will be around 80ish and will probably come out in July. I'll release that as a PDF and print product.
