"Well, our friend the Archon here has a few minutes left before he has to leave, and has the distinct advantage that death just means an early ticket home for him. Why don't we send him down first? He's no dolphin, but he can swim as well as any of you and can teleport back up if he finds anything."

Is this another fully submerged level, or is there an air level above the water this time?

Liberty's Edge

Male Dwarf Fighter 7

Sending the archon's a good idea. DM says water 8 feet deep after a 25 foot or so drop, so I assume the level is not fully submerged?

sorry guys came down with some sort of stomach bug on Friday morning, back to normal posting on Monday

The archon does as it's beckoned, it reports back that there are a number of mammalian creatures in the water and the water is indeed about 8 feet deep, before you can inquire the exact number of mammals or their species, he fades away, returning to his home plane.

Liberty's Edge

Male Dwarf Fighter 7

"Great. Any ideas on how to make us more effective in underwater combat? Failing that, anyway we can bypass having to get in the water all together?"

There are two ways that I can think of. The first is we caste a bunch of FLYs and just fly pass them. Second, we cast a bunch of Freedom of Movements and take the fight to them. I prefer the second method because there is no guarantee of a place to land if we fly. Also, the next chute could be underwater and I rather be able to fight. I think either method requires us to rest so the casters can prep the spells.

"I can turn into something that can swim again, but I've got nothing that will help anyone else unless you want to try climbing over the top of the room or being enlarged and just wading. I can definitely summon something to give us some support, though. Speaking of which..."
Resummoning Gannertung

And you just rested like a hour ago in game time LoL...that's teh problem with not having a ticking clock.

Do we actually need to rest? I'm only down by a single first level spell, and unless I missed something major Delwyn is only down by two spells and no one is injured.

Liberty's Edge

Male Dwarf Fighter 7

The only reason to rest is to so that Delwyn can memorize Freedom of Movement for everyone. If we're not resting, then we have to figure out a way to either fight effectively under water or find a patch of dry land to engage the enemy. If I recall correctly, our last encounter in water didn't go well...

Sheridan, I might have asked this before, but can Gannertung fight amphibious? Can you perhaps summon some creatures to either aid us in water or at least distract the enemy long enough so we can get out of the aquatic environment?

Dark Archive

Male Human Summoner 7

"I can definitely summon something to help us out, although what I summon will depend on how many foes we face and what they are. Gannertung isn't technically aquatic, but he can hover over the water easily and reach anything below the surface."

Liberty's Edge

Male Dwarf Fighter 7

"Well then, let's go!"

Gerant pulls out a grappling hook and secures it on the chute, then slowly lowers the rope down into the water.

"If we have to swim, we should at least try not to alert the beasts."

Is everyone still with us? Delwyn hasn't post in a while and the cavalier never made an appearance.

Dark Archive

Male Half Elf Fighter 7

I'm still here, life is taking my time.

"So we have flight for up to maybe 3, depending on the weight Gannertung can hold, more water, and several potential enemies. If they are like those from last time, we will need to coordinate now our tactics. Is anyone able to create the eye that scouts ahead, a spell of some kind?"

"Or we lower the bait and let them come to us, meet them on dry land. My preference definitely, let them climb up the shute to us."

Still here, but not tooo active as jequine's skills don't seem so useful at the moment.

Liberty's Edge

Male Dwarf Fighter 7

"I say we scout it out first. Once we ascertain the enemy's #s and ID, we can plan accordingly. If they have the ability to climb up the chute, then I think luring them would be a good idea."

Anyone have a spell that can do the trick? If not we can lower the person with the properly knowledge down...

Here obviously, waiting for you guys to declare what you're going to do. I allowed so many people to join so that when people disappeared (as they always do) the game could continue

Dark Archive

Male Half Elf Fighter 7

Valanos can't do anything regarding swimming and recon as well as the others.

"Send the summoned creatures as scouts, I believe we can still breathe water so let us make haste. If scouts are found, have them lead them up the pipe, creating a fatal funnel, we kill them at our leisure."

"Sounds like a plan to me."
If there are no last-minute objections, Summon Monster 4 for a Medium Water Elemental.

After summoning the elemental it takes off into the water, the medium elemental is actually tough enough to take out the seal-like creatures it encounters, and returns, reporting a tunnel (chute) in the opposite corner.

too anti-climatic? Just try to get to the real encounters, this one is another easy one, that's just a stepping stone. Resource used, so let's let that one resource be all that's needed for this encounter.

Dark Archive

Male Half Elf Fighter 7

"That makes this much simpler, I suppose it's time we continued on. I elect Jequine, Sharidan and the elemental move first, as they have the better mobility."

Infernal

Spoiler:
There must be a clue somewhere.

Liberty's Edge

Male Dwarf Fighter 7

Alright, let's move on to the next chute. Will Jequine be checking for clues, traps?

perception for clues/traps: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (10) + 14 = 24

The Exchange

Female Human (Keleshite) Rogue 1
Spoiler:
HPs:10/10 AC:17,14,13 F:+2,R+5,W+1 Init+3,Perc+5

Jequine goes down the chute, and heads towards the next shute, she checks for traps as she tries her best to keep out of sight.

Perception 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (1) + 13 = 14
Stealth 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (7) + 14 = 21

Jequine locates the chute, unlike the submerged level, this chute just juts a foot above the water, with a 2 foot wide platform around it. Using the mighty eidolon to ferry people over, you all stand on the lip of the chute ready to drop as Jequine shimmies down the chute, wedging herself in.

1d20 ⇒ 20

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

Jequine eyes only:
please make an initiative check, inside a spoiler tag please. You lost the surprise round, if you roll well you may beat it's second round action. A pair of claws reaches up and swipe at you, catching you unaware, the echoes of the pipe masking the beating of wings. Make an acrobatics (balance check DC20) please to avoid falling out of the pipe. You take 12 points of damage. btw, first roll above was its perception check, second roll was its stealth check.

Everyone may roll for initiative but don't post actions yet. You hear the sound of ripping flesh and Jequine grunt in surprise...

GM Mechanics:

1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12 Claw vs. Flat-footed.
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22 Claw vs. Flat-footed.
DMG for attack #2, 2d4 + 5 ⇒ (3, 4) + 5 = 12
Initiative 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14

Climb 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18 to go up the chute

Climb 1d20+10 to go up the chute

Jequine withdraws, but nothing follows, judging by the size of the paw that smacked you it's too big.

"OK guys, over to you, if that things not coming after me, you can be sure its waiting for the next one to go down. Do you think you would be OK going down to take it on, we can lower you with a rope to make sure you don't fall. Or I can let you us my ring, it will let you fall without injury, but I will need it back." She stems the flow of blood from the stipes of raw flesh as it escaped the wounds on her face, she looks away from the party as she does this, not wanting them to see the disfigurement. She feels the wounds and continues, "Probably a really big thing down there, no idea how many there might be!"

@Geraint - 12 HP down, will wait for you channel later to recover, hopefully.

Liberty's Edge

Male Dwarf Fighter 7

"What is the drop in the chute? Can we maybe jab at the bug with a spear or something? Going down seems a bit reckless; it's certainly a last resort if nothing else works."

Can we toss down a dagger, then caste an area effect spell on it (while it's in the air, close to the bugs) like fireball? Just a thought.

As you stand discussing the situation, you hear a roar, and spikes fly up through the chute missing you all, but causing quite a ruckus as they ricochet up the tube. Bug is probably the wrong description.

Knowledge Arcana DC 15:
Manticore, Magical Beast is a better description.

Knowledge Arcana DC 20:
This creature has a vaguely humanoid head, the body of a lion, and the wings of a dragon. Its tail ends in long, sharp spikes. It can use the spikes as weapons, it is intelligent. Though not particularly bright

Knowledge Arcana DC 25:
It can hurl the spikes in about a 30 foot cone.

Knowledge Arcana DC 30:
It can only hurl 24 spikes, 4 spikes per volley. They regrow at a slow rate.

Dark Archive

Male Half Elf Fighter 7

Am I able to examine the spikes, velocity, and spread of attack to ID something of the creature?
Know dungeoneering 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27

Liberty's Edge

Male Dwarf Fighter 7

I only got knowledge dungeoneering. Guess it's up the spellcasters.

Dark Archive

Male Human Summoner 7

Initiative 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Know: Arcana 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
"Manticore! It's a big lion-ish flying thing. And spikes, obviously, although I don't remember where they come from."
He pauses for a moment and thinks, then whispers:
"You know, magical beasts are almost always intelligent enough to at least speak, we might be able to negotiate with it. We have killed a lot of things on the way here that we could easily turn over to it as food."

"Yes, come down to talk...I could bring out tea and crumpets. But only send one down, I don't want you to trick me."

Obviously this one isn't too dense.

Liberty's Edge

Male Dwarf Fighter 7

Who should we send? Someone charismatic or someone tough to withstand an ambush?

The Exchange

Female Human (Keleshite) Rogue 1
Spoiler:
HPs:10/10 AC:17,14,13 F:+2,R+5,W+1 Init+3,Perc+5

Charisma and Gifts might be nice for a change.

Liberty's Edge

Male Dwarf Fighter 7

I guess Gerant will sit this one out then. Give me a shout if he's needed.

Dark Archive

Male Half Elf Fighter 7

In a low tone-"Whomever can speak well, and defend themselves. Some buffing spells would be appropriate."

So, what's the verdict?

The Exchange

Female Human (Keleshite) Rogue 1
Spoiler:
HPs:10/10 AC:17,14,13 F:+2,R+5,W+1 Init+3,Perc+5

I would say if Sheridan's around, he's always had the charisma to impress Jequine.

Dark Archive

Male Half Elf Fighter 7

Charisma to impress another is circumstantial. Sheridan or Jequine are best; sheridan knows the capabilities of the beast, and Jequine can speak well.

Liberty's Edge

Male Dwarf Fighter 7

I think Sheridan is probably the best candidate. If he's willing.

Dark Archive

Male Human Summoner 7

Sheridan's actually a terrible choice due to his intense gullibility, but for that same reason he's also perfectly willing to go.
When no one else expresses an interest, Sheridan says "Well, I'm certainly willing to give it a go!" He looks around for confirmation, and if no one objects will prepare to be lowered down by Gannertung.

...says the spider to the fly... no one used sense motive...interesting

Sheridan is lowered by Gannertung...

Sheridan:
You see the beast laying down sphinx-like about 50 yards away, looks pretty calm. "Come, let us have a conversation." it says.
