This talk of the South reminds me of a Greek girl I knew when I spent a semester in London. She used to always say "if I go to America, I would want to see South America." My response was "you mean Brazil and Argentina?"
She didn't. She meant the South, and never quite appreciated the distinction.
My wife still doesn't understand what I mean when I say "the country". She grew up in the OC, but I still love her.

Yes, I did spend a large chunk of my childhood in the UP. No, I still don't understand why anyone would purposefully eat something that tastes (and smells) like cardboard soaked in toxic chemicals. Okay, the allergic reaction (which was much milder back in those days) didn't endear it to me either. But that doesn't change the fact that it's totally utterly vile. Blech. And my mom would actually buy that stuff on purpose!

People who don't like grits have probably had bad, lumpy grits. Grits should be very hot and made with cream and butter, whether served sweet or savory.
I have had 'good' grits and I still don't like em. Just don't. Proving yet again that I'm a yankee. Please don't hold it against me. I can't help where I was raised. ;)

Depending on who you ask, the south IS a separate world from the rest of the US. And there are people on both sides of the Mason-Dixon who say that :P

So I am writing an article for the Workshop exploring the idea that Dungeon beneath Ptolus can be considered a Mythic Underworld. I am pretty excited about this concept, though I think I have reached the point where I have to ask myself if anyone would really care about a multi-page dissertation into the subject. I know it would be popular but those doubts creep in every so often, you know.
I am thinking I should take a break. Perhaps I will do some packing while I let the ideas percolate some more.

Born and raised in New Orleans, and I despise grits. If I were emperor of the planet, grits would be high on my list of things to be banned (right up there with mayonnaise, NCIS: Los Angeles, and chick flicks).
Okra is ok as an ingredient in various dishes (such as gumbo) and fried is tasty, but I'm not sure I could sit there and just eat plain, old okra.

Really? Well, it's important to have a good pie crust recipe to start with. And what was in the filling? Rutabaga, potatoes, onions, and pork loin (or beef, either is okay) are a must. But I often add a little cabbage as well. Keeps it from drying out.

The recipe was a basic quickbread dough, not a pie crust. Pie crust would have been much better. Filling was lean beef and potatoes, not much liquid. Onion, maybe? Bland, boring, dry.
