Vital Strike would also be more for mobile people or ones who really hate DR, who'd rather deal more damage with one attack than with multiple ones. It'd mesh well with Mobility or even readied actions.
[Edit] Also, it sounds necessary for the Crossbow-Fighter archetype, where a full attack requires another feat tax and you'd be expected to make all of your attacks readied anyway.

If you are concerned about feat tax wouldn't this dissuade you from vital strike rather than encourage it?
Again as it's written I think it should be not a feat tree but a single scaling feat. Then have an improved version that can be done via spring attack/cleave and perhaps a greater version on AOOs.

I'd like to see a change to Vital Strike as well. Something to make it a bit more viable, at least. I see no reason why it shouldn't be compatable with Spring Attack, for instance. I certain situations, it works well, such as against highly mobile opponents, when your iterative attacks have an abyssmal chance of hitting, or against particularly tough DR. Still, it makes little sense to have the feat imcompatible with a few of the others.

most of the damage would come from the sneak attack and the STR.
And besides if you invest a lot of feats in a single tactic you want that tactic to work well.
