Hello Gamers!
Since October of 2009, I've started painting miniatures the correct way with my boyfriend Sean (as if you didn't know that). He showed me, as he has many people, how to properly paint. About 10 years ago I bought several miniatures for 3e D&D and tried to paint...Fail! They looked slap-dash! Now I'm really into painting!
So, I wanted to start a thread about painting minis and see if anyone else would like to share theirs too. Check out the links I have put in here and feel free (nicely I hope haha) to discuss them with me. More to come of course--I have several minis in progress! Post yours too! I'd love to see them!
My General Artwork--in case anyone is interested!
Thanks for looking, hope I get to see your painted minis! :oD
Take care,
Jodi

Nice work. I think I like the sea elves best of all.
Thank you! Those are one of my favorites too, they're so cute. I really like the green/blue skin tone, I think because its very vibrant. I like the contrasting colors on miniatures. Of course second (or first heehee) would be the Litorian types too. Those are very neat.

Hi
Here is a link to some of my many hundred painted mini's. They are all done by one of my team at work and he is super talented - the pictures in no way do them justice...
Who is it that painted these? I absolutely love the Troll! :oD I know what you mean too about the pictures never allowing them to look how they do in person. Naturally, that happens. I try to take close ups of the faces too because after putting all that hard work into their face I want to show them off! Awesome minis! Thanks for sharing!

I have an absolutely terrible camera for taking macro shots, so I don't always have the patience with trying to get good pics, but what little and poorly photographed I have are uploaded here:
http://www.deathquaker.org/gaming/miniatures.html
Ignore the "preferences and techniques" page as it's entirely outdated and I sound like a know-it-all (nothing new). Fantasy pics are toward the bottom.
Also, not linked there are the minis I did for my players in my "Slay the Immortal" campaign, which is chronicled by Lathiira at this here forum:

Good stuff.. I just found this site today, and you might be interested. Pretty insane what some people can do with a little paint.
Oh yeah, it is a fantastic site (their shop is pretty good too), but it can make you feel completely inadequate. I use it a lot for inspiration, it is good to see what others have done with the same figures. Some of the figures are absolutely breath-taking.

Just a guy who works for me (not in gaming) who paints miniatures on commission. His work is awesome and very reasonable for the hours he puts in. He is currently painting a number of figures for me including a large red dragon which I will post up once done.

These are nice! Jodi Lane I like the work you did on the blades. Do you have any hints for how you do it?
Otyugh likewise I have been trying to create that flame look for quite some time. Any suggestions on making that work?
Have y'all seen the Red Dragon Reaper did for Paizo? I can not find the link now, but it is due out in March.

Heh, she did that freehand. :p
I have some .2mm pens from the art store that I use to paint tiny details on minis like tattoos, writing in books, and so on (like for this half-orc I did). Jodi has decided to limit herself to brushes for now; as she puts it, "I want to learn it the hard way first."

Thanks a million! I actually only let myself (as Sean said) use a brush on minis because I don't feel elite enough yet to use pens or any of the fancy stuff.
Basically...With the little designs I would maybe suggest drawing it on paper first to get the idea down, or find a picture similar to what you're wanting. I sort of just "wing it" when it comes to these things because I know I can paint over it hee hee!
Then when you put your brush into the paint, don't put the entire brush into paint just the tip because that way you wont risk blobbing paint onto their arm or what not.
Also if you mess up and the design has a little shakiness to it...take some paint that is the color underneath it and touch it up. Wont be able to tell. :o) I think I had to do that on the Litorian's blade.
Hope that helps and I'm really psyched that you asked me!

I'll try to post some of the better paint jobs and mini conversions I've done. Although i do more with Warhammer stuff.

I'm glad you like the colors! I try to use some contrasting colors for the minis and sometimes colors that I think people never use. Not sure why but I like for them to stand out...and from farther away I want the mini's features to show. :o) Can't wait to see yours sometime!

and Sean, I have some of those pens. I got them for the pupils and then discovered they can add some decent shading on scales, so +1.

Here's The Album as it stands. The squigs are from the past year, and still require some finishing touches and basing. The Shamans (Shamai? ;)) are from '99 with recent touch-ups/repairs; I may improve them in the future, but the pile labeled "To Do" isn't getting any smaller. I'll take more photos and upload them, eventually.

Thanks! That was the first time I tried sculpting anything like that (the fireball); I think the colors at least made up for what was lacking in the sculpting. I think if I try to do sculpt flame again, I'll use a little brown stuff to make it "crisper" so the flames can have better points.
Love your pics, too, btw. Very nice clean lines and nice use of color. Really like the scheme for the female thief. For whatever reason, I struggle with lavender--when I put it on a model, I either over-shade it (so it becomes purple) or make it look washed out.
2D drawings are fabulous.

This is a little random and you all probably realize this, but if you're into sculpting minis... Mighty Putty (As Seen on TV) is the same product as Green Stuff but for considerably less money.
Is it exactly the same product? I can't find a list of the compounds, but at least from the appearance and consistency, they look like they're a bit different. Both epoxy putties, sure, both based on plumber's epoxy compounds... but does Mighty Putty hold fine detail the way sculpting putty does?
Do you have links to any discussions from mini sculptors about how it works as a sculpting medium?
Not to dis what you're saying, I'd just like more information.
BTW, if anyone ever does want to buy the Kneadatite Blue/Yellow Epoxy ("Green Stuff"), it's best to buy it in the big tubes from the Warstore or the like... should be around $13.00 for a big pair of tubes. Don't buy the stuff in the strip/tape form--it usually costs relatively more for a smaller amount, and the part where the two colors meet eventually cure together, rendering the middle bit useless.

I'm not sure at a technical level but they sure seem like the same stuff to me. Mighty Putty may dry just a little harder and be a little more prone to cracking.

Sean K Reynolds Contributor |

I assure you that greenstuff (kneadatite) and Mighty Putty are NOT the same stuff. Greenstuff's two components are softer and smoother, when cured it is flexibly firm but smooth and not grainy, and doesn't leave a residue on your hands. Mighty putty is one paste-like component and a hard waxy component, when cured it can be grainy (because the waxy stuff doesn't always mix in 100%) and while it is hard it is a little brittle, leaves a white residue on your hands, and stinks (as in, you don't want to use it in a small enclosed room).
Yes, MP is cheaper, and there are things I use it for (like filling in large gaps in a terrain piece, or building up a large scenic base for a display piece), but you wouldn't want to sculpt details with it, and you wouldn't want to use it for anything requiring stability on a miniature's scale. For slottabase minis I often use greenstuff to build up a washer as a base and glue the mini in place; I tried it with MP and I don't know if it was a reaction to the superglue or just the MP but the mini kept pulling free and the putty kept breaking off. I finally had to yank out the mini, cover all the MP with greenstuff, and re-glue the mini's slottabase into the greenstuff-covered gap in the MP base, which worked fine.

Sounds interesting! I've not tried any of the more "special" FX on the blades or anything yet. There was a mini I seen years ago that had a fire blade that would have been neat to try now that I'm better at painting...perhaps I'll have to dig through reaper and find him! I like the spellcaster minis that have a spell in-hand, be neat to try to paint those.
I'd like to see your pictures for sure!
Sean does lots of neat things with those micro pens. You should see this (I think it was) spell book he actually wrote in with them. Very cool...
Sean you should post that in here???

Sorry for the misinformation. I've used each a sum total of about once or twice each and thought they were the same

Aww thanks! For some reason I love using purples and bright blues on the minis. Perhaps it's because they really stand out on black. That mini was for Sara Marie and she loved the scheme which made me happy! I wanted it to sort of look like the rogue was creeping in the night.
I'm also glad you like my drawings, I love to draw! I need to post more of my drawings but for some reason I cannot bring myself to scan stuff over and over!

I never thought to use pens! I'm always having trouble getting the super-fine details like eyes and teeth. Especially when they are recessed, even a 20/0 brush is way too big!
Do you have any recommendations on what to look for in a pen like that?
This is more Sean's arena because he's the teacher! I'm the student! But, I just asked him right now and he said those pens are .2mm Pigma Micron Pens from your basic art store or you could do a search for that brand :o). Let us know how you fare with them! I've seen him use them and they look amazing, but I just wont let myself--yet!

![]() |

I told a friend of mine who paints mini's professionally, that I use pens like Sean was talking about. He got pissed and said it was "cheating." Personally I don't think so at all, and think he was just jealous!
You know, I personally do not think it is cheating either. It is not easy to use the pens either. And really, I think my hands would be just as shaky with the pens as they are with paint brushes. The guy though is probably like me and takes it as a personal challenge to paint the miniatures with a brush. I, on the other hand, do not frown on using pens regardless of me wanting a challenge!

I love these threads where people show what they can do with minis. Thanks, Jodie et al.
My pleasure! I love to spark such a fun thread :o). At first I was concerned that not many people would be into an online discussion but very pleased to be proved wrong! I enjoy encouraging creativity and fun, hopefully this will continue. As I paint/finish more, I'll have more to post if people are still interested!
Want to apologize for my 1 million replies on here--next time I assure you I will take the time to reply by the copy/paste method that Sean just recommended (to avoid the mess of my replies hah).
