No, she literally means putting paint on just one (lateral) half of the brush when you're painting a border area, so the paint only goes on the side you want it to.

Like if you were touching up a map of the coast of California, you'd put brown paint on the right (eastern) side of your brush and paint along the water line, only getting brown paint on the land side and nothing at all on the ocean side.

I sort of developed my own little, "technique" while painting minis. Especially the ones that have a lot of detail. Well, I can't really explain it without visual (photos) explanation. Sean and I have been calling it the, "Half brush technique." It works really well. I'm going to see about taking some very close up pictures of this when I do it something and I'll post them!

Basically, this technique just involves minimal paint on the front half of the brush, then let's say you're painting the edge of a character's tunic...those edges are on top of their skin which is hard to do without getting it on their arms/legs...so, I just let half of the brush sort of hang off the edge to paint those areas.

Works really nicely. Trust me, pictures will help!

Drybrushing?

Nope!

I think we're gonna need a video, because isn't the point of painting minis to only put the paint where you want it to go? Like an grown-up version of paint by numbers. :)

Yeah, I will have to do a close up video when I do this. I'll get Sean to help with that because it'll be hard to set up!

I really am into the vibrant purple on black, especially for dark elves!

Yeah, I'm going to have to try that style you used on the mind flayer. I try to avoid doing really dark minis because on the table they usually look like black lumps, but the electric purple makes it stand out.

These are the photo's of my finished dragon (and the work in progress to that point) as painted by my friend Sean. I get him today!

Hope you like them

Hey thanks, glad you liked it!

I had the same experience, especially when I was looking at my Warhammer 40K armies arrayed on the table. My Dark Eldar ended up having the same colors and they ended up looking pretty cool.

I've got a site up on DeviantArt for this sort of thing, but it wouldn't hurt to link ya'll to what all I've done as far as miniatures go. I've got quite a few lined up to paint as well, and I'll hopefully be able to post up some WiP pictures soon (like in the next two weeks).

Bump!

This thread inspired me to break my paints out again. (Half the damn pots dried up though! *shakes angry fist*)

Scarab Sages

This thread is inspiring!
(thank you Crystal for pointing it out!)

I haven't painted for AGES, but here is a picture of a dungeon that made 5 years ago...

Dungeon

Cheers! :D

I haven't been commenting on a post by post basis, but I just wanted to say "nice work!" to those who've been posting links recently. :)

I'm really happy to see people enjoying this thread! Keep joining in the fun!

This is one of my most recently finished miniatures as well as my FIRST creature miniature (as opposed to a humanoid type):

Jodi's Hippocampus.

Well done, I like the color choices!

My only crit is that I'd like to see more highlights on the spines and fins.

BTW, if the paints aren't completely dry (gooey and sludgy, but not solid) you can mix'em with a bit of water and acrylic paint thinner and they should be salvageable.

Thanks DQ, I can usually bring them back from the dead but these were in the old often criticised GW paint pots from 10 years ago. They are rock hard.

Ah. I feel your pain. Ah well, it's fun to get new paint too!

Shadow Lodge

strangely, my oldest Citadel pots have worked well...the next gen, screw-top only, were crap; even when I used them regularly I had to add thinner...the new pots are better than the last, but still sub-par IMO. Gotta switch to a brand with dropper bottles, I hear that they're much better. Anyone have recommendations?

Yep, screw-caps are the ones that, well, screwed me by drying over quickly.

I recommend the reaper master series paints. I have them and love them go on very smooth, hardly ever have to thin the paints. Great for blending the colors.

I'll second this.

Also, although I admit I'm too lazy to do this myself, you can also order empty dropper bottles from Reaper or Vallejo if you have existing Citadel (or other) paint that you want to pour into them.

Not sure if anyone still checks this thread but here is a new guy!

He's too fat to walk. :p

I haven't painted minis for ages now, last things I painted was WW2 vehicles for a wargaming club.
Watered washes, dry brushing and a real good quality fine pen for picking out detail really help.
Aluminium foil takes paint well and I use that to make bedrolls, tents anything which is made of canvas really to customise figures. Model railway stores are great places to pick up odds and ends like paint which flakes to rust and (stupid I know) fake dirt. All this makes minis really special.

When you get that fat there is no way you can get to them yourself! Thanks for the feedback guys, I will pass it on to the very talented artist - by the way they are so much better in real life!

Excellent work! Really good highlighting. For some reason, I really like characters who have green or blueish skin!

Sczarni

Almost done with Seoni, Ezren, and just started Lem & Dr Lucky.

As soon as I get some decent snaps I'll post em up.

Heh, i'm finally working on my Bal-Torg mini for my drow game, poor guy's been primed for about five years now....

Sadly the pictures do not do them justice. And even sadder that he can't make a living out of painting them as he is so talented.

He should try conventional painting, that's the sort of thing you can actually make money on. :p

I just paint the lowest levels of detail first and work my way up carefully.

What I have issues with is blending, I just can't get a good gradient. I think I need something to make my paint dry slower so there's more time for me to put the next color and I don't end up with a visible line of color.

Contributor

There's a name for that, I can't remember what it's called...

<google google google>

Aha! It's called "paint retarder." Just make sure you buy *acrylic* paint retarder (as I don't know if enamel retarder is the same material or would have the same effect).

I'm a huge fan of Formula P3 paints, but dang do they dry fast outside of the bottle.

I found some pictures of minis from about a year or two ago (I've come a long way sense then). These two are some of my favorites though thought I would share them.

Pistol Wraith 1, front
Pistol Wraith 1, back
Pistol Wraith 2, front

If you look through the gallery please ignore the pepto pink warmachines...

You might want to check out Bartertown, in the Misc Fantasy section. Generally, one can always find posts from people looking to sell/trade Rackham stuff.
